The Kangaroos, I believe are resigned to the fact, that pacey defender David King has quit the club and wants to play with the Fremantle Dockers next year, who made him an offer quite more substantial than the cash strapped Roos could offer him. It is not all bad news for the Kangaroos however as Fremantle are willing to handle their first round pick in the national draft as compensation. And I am pretty sure that Peter Bell will stay with the Roos, fending off the vultures from West Coast. It is still unclear where Fraser Gehrig will end up next year (despite persistent rumors it is unlikely he'll play for Collingwood due to salary cap restraints, trust me, the Magpies even with Eddie are close to exploding) which leaves Geelong, Sydney and possibly Hawthorn in the race for Gehrig's services. It appears though (despite my loyalties) that Geelong are likely to win the race for Gehrig's services. If you don't believe me, than until the trading peroid starts/ends. !!!!

Thats easy to say Rooboy but whoever made that decision would have to be able to justify letting one of your "very best" players go for NO compensation.

In the end your club's officals are responsible for getting the best deal for your club. I would be furious if I were a North supporter & we lost him for nothing.

do you know that the freo club officials are treating kingy and his wife to the best treatment ever.
they are either staying at the esplenade or another flash hotel or at a club officials home.
they will be getting tours around freo and everything so i think if kingy and his wife get a taste of freo there is no way he would wanna go back to melb.
freo is the best place around

You would have to ask him that.

If they offered him the right money & he was pissed at North for playing hardball & not letting him go to the club of his choice. Who knows?

The Saints arn't as bad as their performances this year suggest. Loewe, Burke, Harvey, Everritt plus draft picks 1 & 2 plus pick 1 in the pre-season draft. They could make a convincing argument that they will improve greatly in the short term.

Drakey what they get King with their first pick and then get it again... I think not...

As a North Melbourne Kangaroos Member for 24 years, I would prefer to give him to the Saints then let Freo throw some crumbs...

Dealing now works on a win-win theory clubs don't like to burn bridges that may need crossing later... That is why we gave up so much for Colby...

It is a mental toughness thing, stubborness I think you can call it...

Like I said. Easy to say if your not responsible.

Of course they should try & broker the best deal they can. If Freo want him so bad then they will offer something North can live with. BUT if they can't & he goes elsewere via the draft North will be the BIG loosers. To let a quality player go into the draft & get jack for him is stupid & certainly not in the best interests of your club.

Just bear in mind that he'll be 29 when playing next year.
Given that recent drafts have been pretty reliable, No. 6 pick would be an excellent investment. Who was No. 6 last year? (Fraser, Haselby, Fiora, Pavlich, Brown... ? All played, and played pretty well this year...
Face it, Freo need old experienced players, and North need new young recruits (who don't come with a high price tag). They should definately consider the trade...

BTW/ I know we'll miss out again. Can someone explain to me (and I am serious) why a player wouldn't want to come to the Eagles? Fantastic facilities, enormous amounts of money, 30,000 + crowds every week, and while this season was bad, I'd say the future is looking OK. Other than the travel thing, why? (And don't get personal

You have to say that David King is in the driving seat on this one. He's been great for North, but if he doesn't have the passion to want to play for the club, then let him go. If he wants to go to Fremantle, North's administrators should do the right thing by the club AND the right thing for David King by organising a trade. He's played his heart out for the club and deserves to be treated properly, so the club should not dump him into the open market. By all means play hard, but in the end, if you treat a player like dirt, then you can't blame other players for not showing any loyalty.

Personally, I don't think Freo's first round draft pick is enough....if they throw in one of their homesick youngsters and the draft pick, then the deal starts to look fair.

Of more interest is the Peter Bell situation. Out of him and King, I'd prefer Bell to stay. At least with King, we've been grooming Troy Makepeace and we have Clayton Lasscock waiting in the wings. With Bell, someone of his ball getting skills and leadership abilities, he'd be much harder to replace.

Well according to the self proclaimed know it all source (G. Healy on 3AW) the Saints came in yesterday and offered King $600,000 a year for 3 years.

Ridiculous amount of money.

Whilst I think that King will be a great pick-up for us, a fair trade would be for the early pick in the draft. If we have to give up a player as well, we may as well drop the draft pick to the second or third round. Whislt you have to give up quality to get quality, you don't want to get screwed either.
This would be a fair trade and with the like of Didak who the Roos may chase it would satisfy one area that the Roos need and one that the Dockers need as well and would be a win-win situation.

Richmond can't get him-not enough money.

A trade wouldn't be possible because if we traded Daffy for King, we would still need more money as King would want more than the Duck.

Gee, I hate salary caps.

Wayne Campbell was still contracted to the Tigers when he asked to be traded. He either had to play for the Tigers or stand out of footy for 12 months.

It's not the same. If King dumps the Roos he will still be playing next year.

Do you really think you would be doing the best thing for North by letting him go for nothing?

The situation has become more complicated, with Geelong entering the picture for Nick Daffy. It's quite clear that daffy won't be at Richmond next year, and Daffy has told Club officials he wants to play for Geelong next year. Obviously this would hamper the Cat's chances of obtaining Gehrig, but perhaps Norff will offer a suitable trade for Daffy, you never know.

I think we all probably agree that $600,000 is far too high, even for a player of King's quality.

However, as a member of the St Kilda Football Club I want to see our club do everything in its power to recruit and trade aggressively.

Because let's face it, we are probably in the same position as a team like Fremantle at the moment. The dockers in most cases need to offer much more money to a perspective player than a team like Essendon or Carlton who have the added incentive of being a part of a current and historically successful team.

Having said that, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Leppitsch turned down a 3 year contract worth $2 million.

We have room in our salary cap so we may as well use it. I just hope that it wouldn't cause tensions between players over how much they are being paid which seems to have happened at the kangaroos.

In regards to Daffy, I think he is far too inconsistent but we sure as hell need a goal kicking midfielder like him.
