Six Adelaide players, including captain Mark Ricciuto, will miss the club’s practice matches against SANFL clubs Glenelg and Norwood at Norwood Oval on Friday night.

The other five are vice-captain Ben Hart (calf), Nigel Smart (Achilles), Brett Burton (knee), Nathan Bock (ankle) and Josh Krueger (back).

Ricciuto, who had the plaster cast removed from his ruptured right thumb this week, and Hart are expected to play against St Kilda at AAMI Stadium on Sunday week in the opening round of the Wizard Home Loans Cup, and the availability of Smart and Burton will depend on fitness assessments at training next week.

Ricciuto, Hart, Smart, Bock and Krueger sat out the intra-club practice match at Berri last Friday, and Burton received a knock on his left knee and went off late in the match.

The five other players who rested at Berri have been chosen to play this week – Wayne Carey (knee) in the stronger team against Norwood from 8pm and Matthew Clarke (calf), Mark Stevens (resting), Jason Torney (quad) and Fergus Watts (Achilles) in the curtain-raiser against Glenelg from 6pm.

Adelaide’s squad of 24 (with numbers) to play Glenelg is: James Begley (28), Ronnie Burns (5), Matthew Clarke (4), Michael Doughty (11), Luke Jericho (30), Chris Ladhams (40), Martin Mattner (39), Ben Rutten (25), Jacob Schuback (26), Robert Shirley (12), Mark Stevens (19), Jason Torney (15), Fergus Watts (6); Rookies – Rowan Andrews (43), Brad Dabrowski (41), Tim Hazell (42), Aidan Parker (29), Matthew Smith (1); Top-up players from Glenelg – Phil Bennett (7), Tim Harkness (34), Daniel McEntee (44), Daniel Reavill (32), Brad Sugars (38), Jamie Vlatko (31).

Adelaide’s squad of 19 to play Norwood is: Nathan Bassett (8), Rhett Biglands (35), Matthew Bode (10), Wayne Carey (2), Tyson Edwards (9), James Gallagher (21), Simon Goodwin (36), Trent Hentschel (37), Ben Hudson (13), Graham Johncock (18), Kris Massie (3). Ken McGregor (16), Andrew McLeod (23), Ian Perrie (22), Brent Reilly (33), Hayden Skipworth (14), Tyson Stenglein (20), Scott Stevens (27), Scott Welsh (17).

Norwood Oval’s gates will open at 4.30pm. Admission is $5 for adults (16 years and over) and $2 for children (aged six to 15).

Part-proceeds will go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, one of the Crows’ 2004 charities. The balance of the proceeds will go to the SANFL for all nine clubs to use for junior development.

Excellent move by the club. When did Burton injure his knee??????

So Watts is over his achillies:D

Stevo playing in the possibles is a bit of a surprise. Hudson, Reilly, Skippy and Hentschel playing for possibles is a good sign. It means they are pushing for selection. Gallagher to play against Norwood is a bit of a surprise. I would have thought he would be in possibles.

Possible line-up vs Norwood

B: Bassett, Hentschel, Gallagher
HB: Massie, McGregor, Edwards
C: Reilly, Goodwin, Stenglein
HF: Johncock, Perrie, Welsh
F: S Stevens, Carey, Skipworth

R: Biglands, Bode, McLeod
I: Hudson + 5 from Glenelg game - possibly Begley, Burns, Shirley, Ladhams & Torney

Hudson is a big call IMO.

What do we interpret that to mean?

Is Clarke being eased back in by playing in the earlier game, or are we being told that he may already be our number three choice?? Surely not.

Thats a pretty good line up. I think Carey will play CHF and I think you can add Schuey to the interchange at the expense of Burns.

Looking forward to both games. I do find it a bit odd that Mark Stevens and Clarke are playing in possibles. I would have thought they would be certainties in our best 22.

Maybe its just a balancing act.

Possible side Vs Glenelg

F: Watts, Rutten, Burns
HF: Schuback, Stevens, Ladhams
C:Begley, Shirley, Doughty
HB: Torney, Dabrowski, Mattner
B: Smith:(, Parker, Jericho
1R: Clarke, Hazell, Glenelg Recruit #1:p

Int: Andrews, and the rest of them:p:)

I think its giving Hudson a chance and easing Clarke in.

Hudson would have to earn his spot in best 22 but Ayres' search for a marking ruckman might be over. Time will tell but Clarke would have really needed to strugle in pre-season to be overtaken by Hudson.

They know what Clarke can do.

Hudson needs game time early so we can see what he's capable of.

I agree. The same should apply to Scott Stevens as well.

Just easing Stevo into the season I would have suggested.
Gallagher, reportedly looking to play as a small defensive player - do you think he could adapt to playing the role?

Anything else we can read into the team selections?

I would have thought, since he's been injured, just to give him an opportunity for a full game, yes to ease him back in.

With Hudson, to see how he gels in the main team.

I assume you meant to say Mark Stevens, who no doubt is in our best starting line-up when the real stuff starts.

Burton apparantly injured his knee in last WE's trial.

Has the pace required to play on the quick talls, but would have to change his previous habbit of not manning up when he played in the midfield. Good to see though that he realises he needs to add other strings to his bow.

Don't you mean smalls??????

The answer to your question Wayne's World is NO. I doubt he would be defensive enough to play as a backman even rebounding one for that matter. He is not a defensively minded player. There is more chance of him turning into a half forward than there is of turning him into a defender.

Time will tell but I am not very optimistic.

Agree with what your saying Stiffy as Gag's natural instincts are to attack ... & yes I meant to say smalls not talls! :o

Yes needs to be successful, as he realises its probably his last chance.
Could be good coming out of defence with his running ability and delivery skills.
Question mark is over the physical aspect to his game, including tackling.

Also a concern that he could get isolated 1 on 1 in a marking contest (not his strength) in the sqare. Would get eaten alive by the likes of Medhurst IMO.

Absolutely, first thing I would do as an opposing coach, would be take him to FF.
Can't see this idea being successful - but again, all due credit for appreciating where he sits in the scheme of things.

No. I mean Scott Stevens - I want to see what he can do during the Wiz Cup.

I like his spirit, but I can't see it working for the reasons you've outlined above.

It's not as if he could stand just any flanker or forward pocket (I assume he hasn't got his eye on CHB or FB ;) ) - they'd have to be limited to the smalls around Milne's size.

Anything taller and the scenario you painted above would come into play.

He faces a hard task.

I sort of agree, but people can change. Will give him the benefit for the moment.
