Rookie Draft Discussion Thread

Hine is usually pretty cagey about giving his hand away before drafts so I doubt that whoever he may have his eye on in the rookie will train with us beforehand. Last year we had Colbert (ended up in VFL) and Griffiths from WA amongst others train with us but nothing materialised there. Then he picked LCL from nowhere.
The year before that, Wellingham and MacAffer were taken without having trained with us prior to the rookie draft. In 2005, Iles and Toovey trained with us prior to being PSD'd and rookied respectively, and Cox was picked up without having trained with us IIRC.

On that basis, I hope whomever we take doesn't train with us first! :D

Seriously though, I just hope we get a good mix of needs/best available in this rookie draft. I'd like us to take a key back, a ruck (maybe two if one is to be the very "project" O'hAilpin), and two on a best available basis. Mind you, I usually don't get what I want, and end up reasonably happy with the alternative. This 2008 ND was the exception, because with the possible exception of Beams over Hannebery, I got four players I'm rapt with. :)

So we now have the possibility of Thoolen and O'hAilpin as 2 of our 4 picks. If we include Hayes as well then there is one spot left. If we go with O'hAilpin then another ruck seems unlikely which rules out Bock.

If it does turn out that way, I hope we go for another inside mid such as Tom German or Bryn Weadon.

Michael Gugliotta - Possible Rookie Pick

Looks like he will be our 1st pick in the Rookie Draft.

I am about 90% sure this will happen because we don't really bring in Draft-Age players into training unless we are going to draft them in the Rookie Draft.

I would love this kid on the Rookie List. He looks like he has heaps of Potential but he does need to Develop his Game more but you can see in the Video what he might become in a CHF who could play on the Likes of N Riewioldt.

Would you like him in the Rookie Draft?

Could be Both but I reckon IF drafted would be more moulded into a Tall Backman at 194cm

Re: Michael Gugliotta - Possible Rookie Pick

I think Gugliotta is a high-upside selection who also fits our needs, and by all reports is very dedicated to his football. I think he would make an excellent rookie proposition, and so for that reason I'm keen on him. If Hine likes someone else, then someone else it is.

Incidentally Dave, is that Bryce Carroll with Googs in the picture?

This appears to be another of him.

I think that is Carrol with Googs at training d: but I guess having him at training means that is highly doubtful.

Yeah Googs is one with a Huge Upside Rookie Pick and Plus Hine likes his love and dedication to AFL

I have a Personal Training on Tuesday at 10:30:( so I won't be online when the draft is on

interesting what they do with their first available.

First round

am hoping its a tall with either Shepherd, Googs or Geartner. Like each for difft reasons. Shepherd can play anywhere and has better skills than Googs but he seems to be a bit more mobile. Geartner is the most mobile and is your buddy option but is a pretty ord kick. Hard to know if Hayes should be bracketed in this group. Probably should be. If you wanted Allwright suspect he wont be there by second.

Hope: Either Googs, Geartner or Shepherd

Second round

Would be handy if we could land one of the mids like DeBoer, German, Pearce, Klemke or Shannon in the second round. All inside ball winning types who were unlucky in the ND and would be 3rd or 4th round in any other draft.

Hope: DeBoer, German or Pearce

Third round

In the 3rd I would be hoping for Hayes or even maybe a Gilchrist. Really rate Gilchrist I think he is talented. Also a leader which is always good. Beaut mover and super kick. Seamus Young mature player would be nice, Barolli, Sheahen, Ledin, Healey or Stanton as well.

Hope: Hayes or Gilchrist

4th Round

In the last lets either redraft Thoolen or hit a ruck prospect. Renton probably pick of the bunch on the day along with Murray then maybe Browne. I think Browne is better than he is given credit for.

Hope: Renton or Thoolen

Now Vinne I'm only posting this for comical reasons. I have nothing but respect for your postings & knowledge, especially the rating of juniors.

The first part has come to fruition.

If the second part becomes true, buy a crap load of Ansell stock coz you are gunna need a 44 gallon drum of K-Y.:D

I really like Gugliotta's body shape. Now I don't mean that in a Vinnie Vegas way of course, ;) I just think he's a plausible shape for becoming a very good player.

Agreed. I think he could fill out well. Even though he's skinny, he's skinny in a Ben Reid kinda way, rather than a Goldsack kinda way.

Damnit, I'm going to be disappointed if he's not there by Rookie #11. I really shouldn't get so concerned about the Rookie Draft, FFS, but when we haven't taken a single KPP this year, we need to get this one right. :(

I agree it's just the Bloody Rookie Draft but Really want this Kid at 11 and as we took no Young KPP in the ND, we need to get some good ones in the RD

TRS do you reckon we should have used pick 73 on Gugliotta, and rookied Brown.

I must admit I'm getting a bit excited about the rookie draft.

Brown would be too old to Rookie

Well forget Brown, what about 73 on Gugliotta??
Would been good but Hine thought we really needed a Older Defender.

I would of used 73 on Googs
