Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Very happy with the main draft, hopefully we are able to pick up another mid and some KPD in the rookie draft.

Jamie Sheahan and Riley Milne are two that interest me, hopefully Hine has some players up his sleeve.

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

You'd think we might take a flyer on a speculative KPD type. Someone like Sibosado or Hayes, maybe? And quite a few of the kids that Burgan connected us to late in the draft are still available (Gilligan, Horsley, Weston etc), so you'd think we might zero in on them given the opportunity.

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

how many picks have we in the rookie draft ?and what numbers are they ?thanks

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

There's plenty of names out there that could've realistically gone today.

Tom Allwright
Bryce Carroll
Adam Cockie
Matt De Boer
Taylor Gilchrist
Michael Gugliotta
Kade Klemke
Zach Ledin
Matt Martin
Sam McGarry
Riley Milne
Clancee Pearce
Tom Rockliff
Tom Salter
Zach Sengstock
Charlie Sharples
Jamie Sheahan
Casey Sibosado
Tom Simpkin
Luke Stanton
Adam Varcoe

Some of the more highly profiled names that missed out.
Bolded the potential KPDs. Milne is probably more a tall flanker, and Sengstock at 19yrs and 191cm may not make key position, although he's got a great leap. Sibasado, Gugliotta and Martin would all be interesting prospects for us, along with the Patrick Hayes' and Liam Jurrah's.

I haven't done any research on those guys, except to say that Weston is bottom-aged and so is ineligible for the rookie draft.

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Michael Gugliotta
Clancee Pearce
Casey Sibosado

Any of those three I'd be happy with especially Sibosado and Pearce

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

We have four live picks in the rookie draft, given the increase in rookie list size from 6* to 8*, and the fact that we have Kevin Dyas currently on the rookie list, Lachlan Keefe incoming, and Scott Reed not taking up a spot on the rookie list due to his NSW rookie status.

It's hard to say what numbers they'll be, as I don't know who has how many rookies coming onto their list, but the first three should be 11, 27 and 43.

*Two rookie spots are often used for senior listed veteran's list players.

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Yep, and Lockyer, O'Brien, Wellingham, Clarke etc. for the Pies. The rookie draft is hugely important.

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Are you kidding?

Dean Cox
Brett Kirk
Brad Sewell
Chad Fletcher

Just to name a few All-Australians.

Is there any chance of us picking up a decent player though?

This thread is talking about us picking up players that weren't chosen in the Draft, so i assumed there wouldn't be any really decent players.

Were Cox, Kirk, Sewell, Fletcher etc all passed in the National Draft?

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

sandilands, davey, bock, rutten, Porplyzia, Russell Robertson, Danyle Pearce, Anthony Corrie, Jake King, tom Lonergan, Firrito, Boyd, Carrazzo, Priddis...plus heaps more i cant be bothered copying/pasting from wikipedia :P

whilst plenty dont work out, the same can be said for the national draft, some players can improve no end with the professional environment a club provides, really they are a recruiters variety of rough diamond, they see a little bit of shine in the dirt, and with some polish it can become something very valuable with not a whole lot of investment (just a matter of picking them up! woo for metaphors!)

So what would u rate the chance of finding a good player in the national draft compared with rookie

Like 50+ in National?

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

yeah probably something like that, i dont know that stats or enough about the draft to be honest, but you gotta think that whilst it may be a 1 in 30 chance of getting a star or just a best 22 player, it costs us only apprentice wages to keep them on our list and you can now have 6-8 a year (depending on veterans)

just looking at the 2006 rookie draft on wiki, saw about 16 of 62 (64 minus a pass and rama) which i recognised as players playing regular games now, so it's about a one in four shot going on that! similar numbers as per 2005

Sometimes it can actually be easier than late picks in the National Draft, because before the rookie drafts, clubs will often have players training with them, so it gives them a closer look and allows them to make a more informed decision.

Harry O'Brien is a perfect example - Passed over in the National Draft, then paid his own way over here and asked if he could train with Collingwood, subsequently impressing us so much that we drafted him.

So why no comment on Laim Jurrah's prospects? A couple of cameo VFL appearences last season but haven't heard much since!

Yes.

And Rutten as well.

Plenty of talent. Someone like Cox was a terrible player as a junior, but was taken late and developed superbly. That's basically what the rookie list is for.

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

So who do we want?

I'm thinking we should pull the trigger on Googs, but there's also Sengstock, Snoop's man Tom German, and the one I suspect we'll go for in Matt DeBoer (if he gets through the PSD etc.).
