Jarryd Blair is ready for AFL

GIPPSLAND Power coach Austinn Jones says Jarryd Blair is a ready-made AFL player.

Blair capped an outstanding season on Sunday night, sharing the Morrish Medal as the TAC Cup best-and-fairest with Murray's Farran Priest.

Despite standing just 172cm, the tough onballer has been the mainstay of Gippsland's midfield this season, playing 17 of a possible 19 home-and-away games.

He also played a starring role in last week's 21-point quarter-final win against North Ballarat.

But Blair was not among the 75 players invited to next month's three-day AFL draft camp in Canberra.

While Blair, 18, will line-up in a TAC Cup semi-final against Dandenong Stingrays at Princes Park today, Jones says his charge should be running around in the AFL in 2009.

"Blairy is an absolute standout. His work ethic is as good as I've seen for a kid of his age," Jones said.

"This kid is ready to go. I don't have any hesitation in saying that whatsoever.

"There's got to be at least one club that's seen enough of him. He ticks the boxes that I feel you need to play AFL footy."

Jones, who played 226 games with St Kilda from 1995-2005, knows better than most what it takes to play at the highest level.

Standing 175cm and weighing just 64kg, Jones was initially rejected at league level because he was considered too small, before carving out a niche as a small forward and then star wingman.

"He's super quick, but he's got the endurance to match. For a rover he is very strong overhead and he is hard as nails. He's already got a developed body," Jones said.

With a grand final berth at stake, Blair is one of several Power players sure to be under heavy scrutiny today.

Nothing separates the sides.

The Stingrays won by four points at Casey Fields in Round 16 and the Power by 12 at Traralgon in Round 1.

"We've had a couple of great battles this year," Jones said.

Gippsland forward Jared Risol comes into the side at the expense of utility Jack Brown.

That was my first thought also. Let's hope Leon takes him under his wing so he matures a bit quicker than Leon. Being rookie listed he is unlikely to receive the same amount of time as Leon to develop.

Re: Collingwood take Jarryd Blair with second pick in Rookie Draft

Is there a reason why we took Thoolen back?

Re: Collingwood take Jarryd Blair with second pick in Rookie Draft

Was bottom-aged in 2007, big man may take longer to develop, perhaps see the need for longer development, etc.

Because we would still need to pay him for this year anyway

I also dont like that every thread has been placed into this one

Re: Collingwood take Jarryd Blair with second pick in Rookie Draft

why are all the threads in here now?? thats confusing...

you're telling me. I did the post above on Bennell then when I posted it went in under one for Blair and I thought I had posted in the wrong thread. My concentration levels are not good at the best of times. I don't need BF playing tricks on me too!

Getting back on track, what is everyones' take on the lack of new height?

I would have thought that due to the influx of mids in the ND that we were a certainty to pick up a project tall, as a developing defender, in the rookie draft.

No one ended up getting Gugliotta, who was training with us.

Does this further point to the faith we have in L. Brown? or do you think we are a little gun shy after Thoolen / Casey-Leigh last year? both of whom clearly did not develop as expected.

The threads are all in here because we don't NEED 6 different threads to discuss each one of the rookie listed players.

It's an executive decision, and you'll all have to live with it.

Read the thread topic above the post if you're having trouble distinguishing which player it is about.

Well vinnie pointed out to me on EB&W that we did still draft talls
keefe is 204cm
reed is 193cm
Thoolen 196cm
as rookies

plus reid, anthony, rusling, brown, cloke, and dawes on the senior list

So we drafted alot of mids this year but still got three talls very late in the rookie draft

Favourite Food: Chicken Parma.

Get him away from the Lexus canteen!!!

After watching the Blair video, I'm making the call right now that he'll make it.

That video's one of the more impressive I've seen for a rookie listed draftee and I assume the only reason he wasn't picked up before now was due to height.

So much of it reminds me of Boomer Harvey, and if he can be half as good as him it's a big win for us.

Yeah we are pretty set for talls although we're pretty set for mids now too. I would have liked us to grab another ruck but happy with mids. That is our biggest deficiency so we needed to look at it and we did.

It all depends on how the recruiters view next year's draft. They may see a few talls they want to look at next year.
