Preview Rookie Draft

GWS have committed their first pick to Lamb and Pies have pick 2 but already took the guys they wanted. Maybe, just maybe we will use the next pick which looks like the first live pick in the PSD.

We don't have a psd pick I thought as what's the point passing on those picks when the psd is only a week away.

Yep. You have 2 list spots

1. You can sign 1 or 2 free agent before the 2pm deadline today
and / or
2. You can take 1 or 2 picks in the PSD
and / or
3. You can carry those 2 vacancies over to the Rookie Draft.

Or a combination of the above.

hahaha no shit shirlock!!! We go for a 38 player strategy and have for a while. I expect this is so we can spread the TPP across 38 players instead of 40, plus by adding 2 more rookies( to the 4) who we can promote to the senior list it ends up the same anyway but at a cheaper cost.

No doubt. 38 has been to save space but also because they've been weak drafts. With us likely having the first live pick it will be interesting to see if we change plan.

We wont change the strategy this close because it depends on our tpp. I would imagine that we would've selected a player who missed out(still available) if we liked them at 1 of the passed selections if we had room to move on the cash. What would be the point in waiting? Its not like previous years to have players sweat out a preseason and then select them so I cant see us taking anymore senior players. The trend in the afl is for more and more clubs go with 38 players as it gives the club flexibility in payments, yet still have 40 players to choose from after rookie upgrades at the start of the year.

No more half forwards please! Best ruckman available for the first pick (cameron?), best available player (other than a half forward!) after that and then I expect we will rookie Matt Thomas.

As a fellow Skevs old boy, I hope Chris Cain gets a go somewhere - not sure that we will go after another mature ager with gordon, lloyd and probably thomas.

We wont change the strategy this close because it depends on our tpp. I would imagine that we would've selected a player who missed out(still available) if we liked them at 1 of the passed selections if we had room to move on the cash. The point of waiting would be to discuss whether or not we could afford to do it or not. Can shift player payments around easily if the recruiters deem it worthwhile. What they wouldn't do is make a rushed decision on the fly on Thursday night but if an opportunity came up they'd take the week to talk it through.

Not saying it will happen, just interested to see if there's someone we like that we may jump at given our position in the PSD.

Stephenson only has a year left, Maric and Hampson both have injury clouds over them, Vickery hasn't convinced me he'll ever be a number 1 ruck and McBean will never be a number 1 ruck. I think a project ruck wouldn't be a bad idea.

I agree with this , also why not take all rookies and tell them that one of them will be promoted at the end of the pre season based on their work on the track and NAB Cup and trial games. Surely one is going to jump out
Of the ground and demand a spot on the list.

A few of you are saying we only go with 38 for TPP reasons - I think you will find it is more for contract length reasons - if they are chosen in either the ND or PSD they have to be given a two year contract - Rookies are a year by year prospect. Plus as said previously with a 38 list you get the two extra Rookies and gives you more flexibility on who utimately goes on the main list - if anyone - during the list change windows pre and mid season. More fleibility too in case of injury upgrade.

Agree - not sure why cameron has slipped so far down the ratings. Was rated best pure ruckman by quite a few pundits, or second best after nankervis. Surely his draft combine wasnt that bad. Anyone know specifics?
