So we picked up four half forward flankers/forward pockets this year. Seems like alot?

Now we have King, S Edwards, A Edwards, B O'Hanlon, M McDounough plys these 4. That's almost a quarter of the list.Hopefully it means McDonough, O'Hanlon, Ellis and S Edwards play more midfield time this year.

Outside our best 22, our midfield depth is pretty ordinary with Tuck and White leaving. Cotchin, Deledio, Martin, Jackson, Conca, Foley and Grigg are all best 22 mids. S Edwards, Ellis and Newman can rotate through. The quality outside the best 22 drops dramatically in Arnott, Thomas, Helbig, Williams and Miles.
Don't rate Vlastuin?

Really, cant you say that about every side?

Well, after two hours of reading articles, posts, watching video I'd say:

Todd Banfield - if he can get his shit together, has good pace, knows where the goals are, and has the potential to cause damage up forward at AFL level. At least will keep other contenders on their toes.

Anthony Miles - kicking could use some work, judging from the 'highlights' vid, but clearly loves being in a pack. Potential to develop into a useful inside mid, and easily has the most upside. Can see him being part of the regular 22 in future.

Matt Thomas - VFL list-filler. Too slow.

Can't say i'm overly impressed with our drafting this year. Seems we are drafting as much for our VFL side as our AFL side. I would be very disappointed if Thomas or Banfield got games ahead of our kids like McDonough, Arnot, Dea, Helbig. Mcintosh, Batchelor and O'Hanlon

Ok.
I'm ready for ASADA to do their thing now.

Nah, players who took illegal drugs don't get banned. Only players who drink energy drinks. So if the Essendon players had the energy drink that Ahmed Saad had, they'd all get banned.

Injections are OK. ;)

And disco bikkies are also fine.
Nothing to see here. #standbyhird

Seems I am one of a select few who are happy with our drafting this year. Midfield depth was needed and was something we got. Forward pockets needed to be filled and we did this. Just a quick summary on what I think of the players we've drafted overall.

Ben Lennon - Oozes class and is known to have played forward, midfield and half-back. I heard people say if he can build on his tank, he could be the most talented player from this year's draft pool. Really good get.

Nathan Gordon - The pick I was most worried about but is a decent pick up. Can play midfield and forward, knows where the goals are and is a smart player. Played KPF occasionally for his club, even though he is 183cm or something.

Sam Lloyd - I was hoping we'd pick him up, and we did. Smart player and kicks goals. Just what we needed.

Todd Banfield - Has shown flashes of brilliance and moments of disaster in his career. If Chocco works with him over the pre-season, he can get his confidence up and be a huge asset. He's quick, can tackle and can kick goals. Could become a weapon if we help him.

Anthony Miles - Thrilled with this pick. Was hoping for Tom Ledger but this is better. Completely out of left field for mine. Great inside midfielder and was squeezed out of GWS, because they have too many midfielders. His delisting says nothing about his ability. Very good player. Massive win here for us.

Matt Thomas - Probably there as insurance, but can see him playing a few games. Really tough player that will put his body on the line to help Cotch, Lids and the others get the ball. Selfless player.

Really excited for 2014 and onwards. Good mix of players to move on with.

TUCK is a huge risk. We already have one player on the list with behavioural concerns, we don't need two.
All reports are he has settled down etc, playing better football .... but it's a risk Richmond and ALL other clubs deemed too much.
FWIW ... Tuck the non-football individual - is better off remaining in Adelaide where he has settled and has life back on track and with support of family (Shane) close by!

I was going to click on the highlights packages for Banfield and Thomas but then remembered I already new what shit looks like:D

Crikey there are some hard to satisfy draft "experts" on this site... have you forgotten we've progressed from potential wooden spooners to top 4 contenders in 4 years by recruiting the right players. FJ, Blair and co have done a super job in a heavily compromised draft period... have faith FFS!

No Darren Jolly or Alan Didak either so both of their AFL careers are now over
As ex filth players, Carlingwood will pick them up next year to join Cameron Wood ( lol) daisy waisy, Scotland the wanna be fireman, mad Mick, and other ex filth admin staff

Surely we as Richmond supporters should understand we need to give players a chance before we make judgement. Likely hood is apart from Lennon the others won't make it to elite/a grade level but give them a pre season and a few nab games before we make judgement. I haven't been on this forum for too long but i would have liked to have read peoples posts when we recruited Maric, Houli, Grigg and Morris. Along with Lennon if one or two of the other players recruited plays regular consistent footy than i will call this draft a win.

I know its personal opinion but i feel Gordon and Miles will play senior footy next year. That doesn't mean our club has gone backwards. I will view it that our development team has done a great job in improving these players in a new enviroment. FWIW i feel we could use Thomas against the bigger bodied teams, we could use his aggression and body size in the stoppages. Would be the ideal Sub actually add some core strength to our stoppages as the younger midfielders tire.

Excellent post.:thumbsu:

If GWS are delisting so called quality mids due to an excess I can't wait for their fire sale of FWDS. ...
Knew we should have kept Mcguane.Straight swap for Cameron would have been a win for GWS.

Morris, Maric, Houli and Grigg were all aggressively poached and I never was against picking up any of them as they represented a need as well as few older players on our very young list at the time. I'm more underwhelmed with our approach, 4 guys who have played at AFL level before and failed to an extent and a VFL player. Our 6 draftees and only one fresh faced kid.

I do have hope for Giles and some for Gordon and Lloyd I just feel we drafted for our VFL team more then our AFL team. If we have drafted for our AFL team then we are going to stunt the development of Helbig, McDonough, Arnot and Dea who are all too good for VFL level and need to be playing AFL to improve but now have to break into a team looking for top 4 (so won't lose very often) plus have guys skipping ahead of them in the pecking order.
