Wednesday 27 November - NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft selection meeting (11am, Telstra Webex); NAB AFL Rookie Draft selection meeting (11.10am, Telstra Webex)
Monday 2 December – final list lodgement and final TPP estimates.
Not in the PSD as we arleady have 40 on the main list, but maybe we can still add him in the category B rookie in between the PSD and the Rookie Draft.
I thought it would have shown up on the list though like Port and Carlton that have (IR) for their Irish Rookies.

At 11:10am tomorrow we still might opt to take Hurley.
FWIW Lloyd said Hurley has been training well (or settled in well? One or the other) and we would have to have a pretty good idea of what he can do for us to bring him out here (or something along those lines). They went and saw him play twice over in Ireland. (that I'm sure about). Iffy piece I know, but my memory isn't what it used to be.

Steven Edwards – 182cm / 73kg / ‘95
Not sure where to put young Steve. Had a blistering start to the year and rocked up to Champs as a kid we were all keen to look at as he was presenting as a quick, free wheeling HB type. Has undoubted speed and terrific lateral movement and agility but not sure we saw the best of him. I think he struggled a bit with the tempo and when his space was shut down he struggled a bit. But look in saying that he has some terrific attributes and is still learning and he could well end up on AFL list. Doesn’t shirk a contest and has speed.
Why and who else: They have had him tucked away all year haven’t they? They have been keen on Chris Cain.

I don't know much about the exclusively Peel players, but with the completion of the WAFL alignment there should be a significant improvement. Whilst it didn't hurt Freo's too much, the absence of Mora and Pitt all year would've hurt Peel's midfield.
Their midfield could potentially get quite a few games from new additions like Sutcliffe, Neale, De Boer, Clancee, Suban, Simpson, Duffy, Menegola and Grey (plus new rookies). An extra year into Crozier and Sheridan should also help. Barring a pretty bad injury run Peel should be a lot more competitive this year.

The former Hawk missed out in the national draft but is firming to get a lifeline in the rookie draft, with Fremantle and Carlton his most likely destinations. The 24-year-old, a former pick No.6, has taken his time to develop the maturity and application demanded of an AFL player but the signs are positive after a big season in his home state. The captain-coach booted 78 goals, averaged 24 disposals and 11 marks per game, took out the TSL's best and fairest award and led South Launceston to a premiership. His size (194cm, 94kg) means he's not a key forward but as a second or third tall with license to roam (think almost how Buddy Franklin played in 2013) he could make it in the big leagues.
5. Chris Cain (Port Melbourne)
A strong performer in the VFL over the past few seasons, Cain is on the radar for AFL clubs after a best-and-fairest year for the Borough. The 26-year-old midfielder booted 37 goals and averaged 27 touches, four clearances and five tackles a game in 2013. He's blessed with above-average pace and a great pair of mitts for marking overhead, and at 181cm and 83kg his body is ready enough to step into the AFL. Cain should follow in the footsteps of former Port Melbourne teammate Sam Dwyer, who landed at Collingwood and was not overawed by the step up in competition.

Tippett, rated as one of the best key defenders in the state leagues, is attracting attention from multiple clubs in the lead-up to the rookie draft. The 196cm, 95kg mature-ager demonstrated superb athleticism in the SANFL this year and was rarely beaten by an opponent. Doesn't have much in the way of offensive weaponry but has the potential to slot straight into the AFL as a shutdown defender like a Zac Dawson or Darren Glass. Fremantle, North Melbourne and St Kilda have all shown interest in the 25-year-old, a former Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns rookie.

I seriously do not get this knock on the guy. Apart from almost being dropped once he has been a much more consistent performer than most on the team. His shutdown of Hannebery in the final was masterful and we all know that Crowley didn't go so well earlier in the year.
But lets just check the stats. 10th for average disposals per match. 6th for most marks. 10th for clearances. 9th for tackles. And 6th for Goals (says something when he plays half back most of the time) with good goal efficiency (7th) and 5th for rebound 50's.
To me this speaks of someone who delivers in spades. Easily a starting player for mine. I would take him over plenty he has some weaknesses. Such as his disposal efficiency which is only 16th (after removing players who have only played 1-2 games.) but most of the mids and some forwards are way after him here.
Add to that - The only Freo player to kick a goal in the 1st Half of the GF.
Not sure I get the need for an emergency mid for the rookie list. For us to use them we would need to have someone go to the LTI ("long term injury" not the other one you miners use
) list. If this were the case it is unlikely to be more than one or two players in that category and so they would be promoted for a couple of matches at most. If last season is anything to go by, RTB is not in a hurry to promote anyone. Tabs took forever to get a promotion, both Griff and Bradley were down early and no promotion. We use that for project players, people like Moller who need work.On the flip side everyone is saying "but Michie and Mello" are gone. Mello was a forward option for a missing Balla/Walters. Crozier proved to be better and we have this Sylvia bloke. Michie is different but once again we have added Sylvia and this returning Morabito bloke who goes ok. But even if neither of them got up, Sherridan is waiting, as is Sutcliffe and Crozier has been rotated through the midfield. That does not even include the half back options that can rotate forward such as D Pearce, Duffield, Ibbo and Mzungu.
Nope the reason Michie wanted out was because the writing was on the wall. We need to loose 4 - 5 mids for a rookie mid to get a look in. Go young, go speculation, gamble and see if we get a rabbit out of the hat.
Yes there is always a Barlow chance but he was 22 when we took him and I would say that you don't want them much older than that. Particularly in our position.

Looking good is one thing but a 26 yr old is elite at very little compared to a drafted player who won a WAFL B&F and is the same age. If he was genuinely elite he would have been taken years ago. Barlow is the example that most applies when it comes to recruiters missing the elite but he was "discovered" aged 22. At 26 people have known you for 8 years, you have no elite surprises left.
I not having a crack at anyone one in particular but just the whole "such and such is god's gift", which is mostly just puff and wind. If there were so many elite anything left in the WAFL/VFL... systems, there would be a lot more Barlow stories but there arn't. Everyone in the AFL system knows that there are too many teams for the talent and the barrel has been scrapped clean repeatedly. If he wasn't discovered before now it's unlikely that his 2 years on the rookie list and 2 years playing before retiring at 30 is worth the spot you can use on someone who hasn't finished growing and could be anything playing up to 14 years on the lists.

We've been into him for a while and apparently not many other clubs are that invested in him. Second round is a possibility.
I think it has to be considered that some players are late bloomers and frankly while the ordinary punter might get sucked in by the Gods gift thing you are talking about, I'm not sure many recruiters would, especially our lot, these days.There is a suggestion that Freo thinks we need to improve/expand our clearance options so we may be looking at him only because he is the best available to fill our present need or we may opt for a younger guy or both. We'll see which way we go tomorrow.

It took an ex Perth player (can't remember his name) who had the best kick in the league until he was about 27 to get picked up. He didn't last long though.
We may not even take Cain, he is just someone we have been linked too. Which means very little considering two of the guys that we took in the main draft were hardly even mentioned by most people before we took them.
I was the one who made the original comment that Cain played like Mzungu with better skills and more pace. I didnt mean it as an insult to Mzungu who I rate highly, instead I was trying to point out that after watching the state game this year I think that Cain could be an absolute star. With the interchange cap it will definitely help to have another player who runs as hard as Gu in the last quarter. I hope that clears up the fact that actually really rate Mzungu but I think Cain will star at AFL level if given a chance in my view.
Utterly bizarre rant given the comment. I didn't see it as a knock at all, are you saying Tendai has elite skills?
