Strategy Rookie draft

Henry is a good powerful skilled player who i was surprised didnt go in the ND. And i do think we need a medium fwd.

Zac guthrie needs to go on protein shakes for 12 months but he is a composed skilled little player, i can see similarities with his brother.

Cant comment on jones as haven't seen him play. I would have liked to see us take tommy atkins but aside from that pretty happy with our draft period. Glad we have addressed some deficiencies in speed and skill and covered off our lack of tall depth.

Is there any footage circling of Guthrie?

How is it a shit move by Sydney? What did they do wrong?

Geelong was entitled to select Simpson. They actively chose not to. Notice that Geelong passed on their last pick, and Sydney grabbed Simpson afterwards. Geelong didn't want Simpson. Nothing wrong with Sydney picking him up afterwards. Or what, do you want to deny the guy access to the AFL system?

100% wrong.

Just wrong.

EDIT - seen the reason for the error. No fault here of Biggy_Boy at all.

Play on.

To be fair here though. This was said when the AFL displayed Simpson to Sydney and Geelong passed. Some glitch in the matrix or something.

Some skinny lads added to the rookie list. Wouldn't expect much from any of them this season, need at least a season, maybe two before they'll be AFL ready.

Looks like recruitment team keep to the same strategy as national draft by taking the best available... as in best available player who has lived in Geelong, or related to a past or current Geelong player.

I hope the recruitment team handed back their frequent flyer points to the club this year.

Thats weird. But prelisted rookies have to be nominated before the draft and then they are auto added with the club's last pick so they are not available to other clubs. So must have been an IT glitch.

It was, I was about to tag you asking if we'd all miscalculated given it had us passing after 3 selections.

I think the mix of player types is quite good here. Still confused as to why a few players weren't taken but the fact that all clubs bypassed them suggests that they have some flaws that are considered terminal.

I'll personally be interested to see how Duman figures over in Freo. Thought we should have had a serious look at him with one of our late picks in the ND. But Henry is a similar type physically, and home grown, so I can see the appeal here. LeBois was another that looked to have some talent. Hopefully J.Jones can be that nippy small forward we've been hoping to get for a while.

I'm not sure about Guthrie. His selection reeks a little of nepotism. But he seems to have the right attitude so good luck to him.

Btw one big positive is us taking 3 indigenous guys this year. It is amazing how they continue to bat well above their weight in AFL representation. The recent off field issues with a number of them hasn't scared team off which is great. They bring so much to our game that would be much the poorer for their absence.

Was hoping for hinge or mackie, being out of the sacred heart college football system but pleased with what wells and his team brought into KP today.

Happy for Mackie to be picked up. I wonder if we would have taken him

Does anyone know about the cat b academy players Geelong has? I thought if they got through both drafts without being taken Geelong would add them to our cat b rookie list. I know they can add them at another time to that list. But I was under the impression it would also be announced today. Has anyone heard anything about it?

Big cuz is getting slaughtered by pies fans.
Poor Andrew, still maligned :(

Here this is the actual last round:

Round 4
Pick 50: Freo: Josh Deluca-Cardillo

Pick 51: Coll: Max Lynch

Pick 52: GWS: Pass

Pick 53: Geelong: Sam Simpson

Pick 54: Sydney: Toby Pink

Interestingly, Pink was that kid in the SANFL who kicked that crazy finishing point I think to win the game in that viral video.

Last player picked.

I was a little skeptical about the Guthrie pick-up as well, but looking at his stats, he seems to be a consistent player, his averages and disposal efficiency were decent, and he seemed to poll quite often in the best for a team that ended mid-table, so considering its a late rookie pick, then I'm not too concerned. He's a skinny lad, so once he bulks up, he will have quite a bit of upside to him.

He polled second most times for the club:

On Guthrie, I'd love to know why he was considered a better bet than Morrish? Just seems odd that he gets a go in front of a guy that tested well physically and performed quite well in the all-stars match.

It appears that Guthrie beat him in the stats (more disposals, marks, better efficiency), he polled in the 11 matches, so although his highlight reel is nothing to write home about, he is pretty consistent. Maybe given his light frame they saw a lot of upside in him, he also ran 3 seconds in 20m, and I'd say he'd have a decent motor also if he's anything like Cam. Guthrie also improved as the season went along it appears.

Interesting as well that we've taken four players from the TAC. The rookie draft really has totally outgrown its original purpose.

I agree and if what is being rumoured is true with regard to the proposal to allow rookies to play AFL without the need for a senior player to go on to the injury list then it's well and truly obsolete. But when you get the likes of Petrie being rookied it really has lost it's original function.

Not sure but the clubs would have more info. Scharenberg ran a 12 beep which would have turned clubs off him not sure why they did the same with morrish who is a good player.

Guthrie isnt nepotism though he was very good for the cannons and has speed and disposal skill which we could use. The only query is because he is so thin whether he can bulk up as much as he will need to in the short time rookies get to prove themselves but ontherwise he is a fair enough rookie pick.

Its possible that when they finally get the new CBA done that the rookie list will go in 2018 and be replaced with bigger senior lists.
