Rookie Draft

What has happened to the kid called Stradanica, he seems to have dropped off the radar. Last year we were reported to be very interested in him?

Was always a rookie pick at best. His combine results were terrible which would've ended a lot of the talk about him. I suspect his name will start to come up more now that the main draft is over.

I think de Luca deserves another chance. Got hit by injuries in his first year and probably didn't rise to the demands of being a professional, but then came back to be a part of another WAFL premiership. He looked the goods towards the end of the year. Also showed that he can hit the ground running in the 3km on Wednesday. If they weren't going to give him a chance, they wouldn't have said that there is a chance for him to be relisted. And the boys got around him as he was finishing the time trial (in seventh place).

Other options for rookie are Bailey Banfield from Broome, Olango for the long term, or Scharenburg who seems too good to not get a berth on the senior list.

Totally agree with the bolded bit, which makes it hard to understand his delisting. Footskills can be the only thing... and the three players you've nominated aren't any better in that area so why would we take them when we had Deluca and Grey and gave them the flick?

I'm hopeful that means that they set him a target to work towards by the time of the rookie draft. Finishing with Nathan Fyfe in the time trial may have been part of it.

I wouldnt mind giving de luca another shot, getting delisted might be the kick up the bum he needs. Other than that i think we should aim for exiting players who have a high ceiling like Liam Ryan. There have been a lot of great small forwards to come out of the rookie draft so i hope we can get one of those.

If available getting liam ryan is a priority , can't let eagles have rioli and liam.

I personally would be happy for the club to throw a PSD lifeline to Gus Litherland. A lot of Hawks fans rate him & say he was unlucky not to break in to their firsts. I note with interest that none of the WAFL clubs seem to have announced him signing on as yet.

There's probably a reason for it then. Might be carrying an injury we don't know about.

Did request Francis Watson as a category b selection? What's the go there? Undrafted so we get him for nothing?

We applied for him to be a member of the Next Generation Academy - which is a stop gap measure to be able to put Indigenous and multicultural kids on the list of no one else picks them up.
But we were knocked back, because Watson is not currently living in the Kimberley. They did include him on a general list, though.

So it's still up in the air. If no one selects Watson as a preseason or Rookie Draft pick, then theoretically any club can select him as a Category B rookie (ie outside the salary cap, just like the internationals). I don't know what happens if two clubs say they want him, though.

Bolton or Ryan would be great for our first pick. I'm pretty worried Freo will part ways with Brady Gray, I re-watched his games against Carlton and Adelaide last week, damn he is good. He has a real toughness that we seem to lack with the depature of deboer. His tackles stick and hurt. Not too worried about Deluca, dime a dozen...

I agree. I just can't see the point in delisting Deluca if all you're going to do is put him back on the list. Grey I can understand because it's a demotion.

I think both have been cast aside due to the clubs focus on foot skills.

Who's available in the rookie draft with better foot skills than Grey and Deluca Chris?

Personally, I'd be looking at taking a mature aged ruck with our first pick - either Oscar McInerney or Rowan Marshall. Doesn't hurt to have another one really, and I'm expecting there'll be a rush of rucks being picked at the start of the rookie draft. I don't think there'd be any further need for a tall, none of the key forwards are particularly exciting.

How many other picks do we have? I'd be taking a crumbing forward, preferably Tyson Stengle or Kym LeBois. Both have speed and elite skills. There's a kid called Jamaine Jones from North Ballarat, potential Cat B rookie too. There are plenty of these types. Otherwise guys like Oliver Hanrahan, Calvin Thorne and Louis Cunningham would fit the ball of outside foot skills. Even a taller Bailey Morrish. And I'd look to balance that with a more contested midfielder too. Perhaps Bailey Banfield or Luke Bunker.

If a more mature body was preferred, I still wouldn't bring Brady Grey back. I'd rather look at ex-Giant Jake Barrett, ex-Sun Andrew Boston or Blake Grewar from the NEAFL.

I'm not really as concerned about small forwards as others tbh. I see Bennell as more and more of a forward every time he does his calf. Compare him to Cyril Rioli. He'd be a gun mid if his hammys weren't stuffed. Bennell up forward would be scary. 40+ goal a season forward IMO. I also thought Langdon looked more than capable as a small forward and probably needs to be to get a spot in a full strength side if I win to be honest. Walters still has ages left, Yarran and Ballantyne have 2-3 years at least.

A while ago I said Liam Ryan wouldn't go in the national draft. Has all the natural footballing ability in the world but his fitness and tackling are woeful. These things can be trained up to a certain point and give him any excuse you want but it's quite possible his weaknesses may be too much for AFL recruiters to ignore.

I get where your coming from with the ruck back ups but the logistics of the host club arrangement with Peel would mean a 6th player who would need some ruck time each week. (Sandilands, Griffin, Clarke, Apeness, Darcy, + 1). Peel reserves would be the only spot for him. Even the 5th ruckman might have to play Peel reserves to get a decent workout if there were no injuries.

It'd be tough in the short term to balance playing time, but if the opportunity is there I'd rather take it now than wait until Sandilands is retired. Especially with Clarke on a one year deal and Griffin a bit injury prone. Potentially all 3 could be gone sooner rather than later. Marshall and McInerney both look worth the investment too, while Darcy comes along slowly.

Would also allow a hopefully healthy Apeness to play key forward. He needs a solid run at it. And given the chances of finding a decent key forward in the rookie draft are slim to none, Apeness forward would be the best option.

That's what I'd do. But it's easy when I don't have my job on the line.

Would assume it is similar to when the Irish get signed as cat B rookies in that the clubs can compete and the player can decide in the end.
Otherwise it would be draft order and we have pick 3 with brissy already having a cat B rookie so less likely to take one on, therefore we would be in with a pretty good chance. (Definitely think it is option A though)

Cunningham, Walker, Piper, Ryan, Junker would all be worth a punt if available IMO.

Think we'll take Guelfi, Walker or Brayshaw with our first pick.

McInerney, Olango or Goddard next.

Then whoever is left of Bolton, Junker, Noonan, LeBois, Ryan or Hanrahan. If none of these left its back to Grey or Deluca.
