Agree with Liz, Rowe should definitely be picked up if he qualifies for a NSW rookie. If he does, I would like to see someone like Smouha or Gaertner. There's already rumours that Gourdis is training with Richmond and I don't he would slide down to us (Rookie draft order is same as AFL draft without the priority picks?)
I wouldn't want to say if they decide to pick up another midfielder in the rookie draft.
Steve Gaertner - Tall Forward. 196cm, 83kg. Dandenong/Edithvale-Aspendale
Joel Smouha - Ruck/Forward/Back, 196cm, 80kg. Queensland/Mt Gravatt
Liz could you clarify exactly how many rookie spots are still available. I note that there is one spot for non NSW players. Does this mean that there are more spots available for NSW players?![]()
Gaertner's too young to be rookied. He's consigned to another year of U18 footy.
Not entirely sure about Smouha but if he is eligible there's a decent chance Brisbane will pre-list him. And if they don't, there must be something wrong with him!! In any case, having two raw athletic Queensland rucks who have barely ever played a game before might be a bit too much.
Not sure of the eligibility of all the non-draftees but someone like Travis Dulic might fit the bill. He's a tall fullback who apparently isn't that quick but is good on the one-on-one stuff.
Teams can have 4 rookies plus another 2 rookies / outside veterans. Sydney will go into 2008 with a senior list of 40, meaning both Magic and Leapin' are listed as 'outside veterans', reducing our rookie quota to 4.
Smith was retained from 2007. Murphy and Orreal have already been pre-listed. Hence just one spot is available in the rookie draft.
In addition to the normal rookie list, the Swans (and Lions) are allowed 3 additional spots for players from their home state. There are no geographical limitations akin to those of the Scholarship scheme - so the Riverina area and ACT come into play. The club doesn't have to fill this quota (personally I think it ought to be obliged to so as to fit with the spirit of the allowance) but those it picks can be nominated before the rookie draft starts (but after the PSD).
We haven't retained any NSW rookies on the list (Barlow and Rowe were but one has been promoted and the other chopped - temporarily?) So there are three spots available. Since Rowe was originally a NSW priority pick there is a chance he is eligible to fill one of these spots again. Not entirely sure of what the rule is when a player has previously been listed, but pretty sure that a few years ago Gerrard Bennett was redrafted as a NSW boy, even though he originally wasn't. Looking at the numbers, I think Shaw must have been redrafted as a NSW rookie last year, suggesting Rowe should be eligible.
Previous NSW rookies we have had include Barlow, Rowe, Meiklejohn, Adam Prior, Paul Bevan, Nick Potter, Andrew Hayes (Lenny's cousin), Earl Shaw, Ed Clarke.
And before someone points out that I've forgotten Kieran Jack, I haven't. He wasn't.
Wow, how do you know all this ?
Are you involved with the swans?
Or did you play AFL footy ?
you seem to know so much

liz is arguably the most respected poster on the Sydney board, but I think we can rule out the did you play AFL footy option.![]()
Ok, so she did not play then
Seems to have a vast knowledge of the game, just thought she might have
my mistake

Your correct on Gaertner being too young to be rookied as is Smouha so not even the Lions can nab him. Dulic is available as he was born in 89 so he may be a chance. I'd much prefer him to Chris Kangars who quite simply can not kick a football to save his life and is purely an athlete trying to learn the game.Gaertner's too young to be rookied. Well I guess my name could be short for 'Trevor'.
But it isn't. And I haven't had a sex change. So I guess it is fair to assume that I didn't play in the premier professional league in the country.
In fact, my active footy experience consists of going along to one training session with the UNSW women's team, realising just how unfit I was, that I had no idea how to kick or handball, and that marking is scary (and chest marking is painful - when you are anatomically built like 50% of the population).
I don't know that I know that much. Plenty of others who post on here know the same stuff that I do. I just love the game, watch it avidly, read a lot (and no, not just about football) and am generally a bit of a sponge. But hopefully a moderately discerning sponge!

weren't smouha and bellchambers tipped to go fairly high in the draft, say, top 20? in fact, i thought bellchambers was being talked about as a real good kid
i'm stunned they weren't taken at all
According to his (Tas) U18 coach Bellchambers is a top class tap ruckman, but "..needs to work harder around the ground and (he) lacks a bit of speed".
Bellchambers also played with the Tassie VFL team, so he must have some ability, but I guess in these days of mobile ruckmen everyone is looking for the next Dean Cox.
FWIW AFL draft guru, Matt Burgan, didn't have Bellchambers being selected until Rd 3 and behind other ruckmen such as McEvoy, (D) Simpson, Lobbe (more a 199cm KPP) all who were taken in the draft.
Burgan didn't have Smouha in his list of 70 players to be drafted.
Apparently Smouha has only being playing Aussie Rules for 12 months and whilst a fine athlete (winning the 3km @ the draft camp), according to Mark Browning, needs to work on his kicking.
It seems if you could combine their attributes you'd have a top line player.
I believe Smouha is too young to be rookied, but you'd imagine a 199cm tap ruckman, such as Bellchambers would be considered.
The reason the Bulldogs have been forced to go with that set up is not because they haven't drafted talls its just the havent drafted any good ones. Mcdougall, Walsh, Williams (Starting to show some signs now) Skipper & Minson.cheers for that
i'm not fussed, i think we'll see in our 06 draftees the benefits of a year's patience
i agree i have some queries about the latest drafting of 181cm-and-under players, but let's wait and see
veszpremi has had some good reports, meredith seems to be a genuine smokey and we're all happy to have snared bird on the scholarship deal
but everyone seems to have overlooked the fact we did draft two big lads, currie at 200cm and white at 196cm, in 06, and with orreal and murphy in the squad, it's not like we're set to follow the bulldogs' recent team set-up
