i have just realised that hughes is already taking up one of the "mature" rookie list spots and from iv heard you can only have 2? so that means we cant have hughes, meeson and newton...am i right or wrong?

I think Newton is under 23, meaning that he is just a regular rookie....

We will basically have no selections preseason draft as we'l get mcdonald pick one and keep Meesen and Newton. IMO we should have got rid of hughes, healey and McKenzie also. This would have allowed us a go at

At the end of 2007 i printed out list out and went through it line by line. There was utter crap on nearly every single. I look at that list and say just about every one it has some degree of excitment about them.

In relation to the rookie list of 09;

McKenzie-keep
Hughes-50/50
Spencer-Delist ( I can believe people rate him, he is the dopest player iv ever seen...everyone here does remember that fumble when lining up for goals agaisnt the roos?)
Hughes-Delist
Valenti- 50/50
Zomer: Delist

Leaving us with 2-3 rookie draft selections...

Is there a third list lodgement, or is the list we have now the list we're taking into 2010?

Wow, someone's mind changes quickly

sorry i meant this is what i would of done;

spencer- DELIST
healey- DELIST
hughes-50/50
mckenzie-keep
valenti- 50/50
zomer- DELIST

Each club can have 8 rookies, but if you have guys on the veteran list, you decrease the amount of rookies by that number...

We can't not rookie Newton & Meesen, it would cause a lot of bad feeling within the player group (lack of trust with Management), not a good time to go down that path.....

Great - so we just pay out Bruce and McDonald and draft Grimes and Panos (on 400k contracts)..

Delisting Spencer & Healey/Hughes in addition to our delistings up to this point, and drafting Patrick & Panos, would be a pretty good outcome I reckon.

But I doubt it'll happen...

In seriousness I actually would prefer to delist Hughes.

Definately has some talent but hes getting too old now and I just cant see him stepping up and impacting at AFL level. He would be pretty close to his best right now I would think. He also plays a similar role to Pettered/Bate/Tapscott/Maric etc..

That should be what Rookie lists are for - as soon as you feel someone wont make it to the top, give another kid a go.

Wouldnt mind knowing what the club is thinking about all of this.

MFC please let us know if we are going to have any more excitement machines coming to our club via the rookie draft!!

FWIW - I'd like Panos, Patrick or Grimes if we are lucky enough to be able to get one of them. Gold coast have a few picks ahead of us in the rookie draft.

My understanding is GC will target slightly older/mature blokes ahead of there entry into the VFL

Good, they can have Newton, then we can rookie Panos. And if Hawthorn nick Meesen (which could very well happen) we can draft Patrick / Grimes.

No, no, keep Healey, he has a lot more going for him than Hughes, that's for sure.

So we have to pass on our 1st n 2nd picks in the rookie draft and so on until messon and newton get picked up (hopefully) freeing us up for a selection, or do you think we'll know by the rookie draft if clubs are going to take them, therefore allowing us to use pick 6???

Will be absolutely fantastic if this scenario does happen :thumbsu:

No worries mate, I'll take your word on that - guessing you know more about him than me...

As i take it if we leave all our current rookies in place and taken meesen and newton we won't have anything spots left for any youngesters.

I feel at the very least Hughes will be delisted, he has been on the clubs development for 3 years, in which one of those years was spent not out list, but we still monitored his progress. If Newton can'y get a regular games hughes never will, so i think we should have one free spot for another youngster. We better take Meesen with our first rookie pick.

Hughes has a year to go on his contract so cant be delisted until after next season.

I hear from reports at the draft night function that it is literally a formality that McKenzie will be upgraded mid year. Apparantly the club would have done it already but he offered to sit on the rookie list for another half-season so that we could draft one more junior in the national draft (Fitzpatrick as it turned out).

Great effort from McKenzie if this is correct.

I know that, what i was trying to say is that if we dont delist any rookies on our list and are committed to newton and meeson and they dont get picked in the PSD or picks 1-5 from gold coast do you think we will pass on pick 6 hoping for either newton or meeson to get picked up by other clubs..therefore at least giving us some possibility of picking up a half decent 18yr old...or do you think we'll know hawthorn for example are after meeson therefore allowing us to use pick 6 on a youngster. OR do you think we'll just use our first 2 rookie picks on meeson and newton...

I didnt know we gave hughes two year deal, not all rookies get two years. We can still delist him if we want to, but we would still pay out his contract for 2010 which makes no sense considering we will have to pay another rookie wages on top of that.

Would be a good effort by Mckenzie, is that rule in place were you can upgrade a rookie to the senior list after round 12 despite long term injuries. But at the end of the year we will have to either draft him with late round pick or delist him or re-rookie.

I would say we'de have a fair idea. Even so, if we pass on Newton 2 or 3 times, we are getting pretty far back into the pool. Who would be left that would interest us more than Newton??.. ok ok anyone. But you know what I mean - there wouldnt be much left that far back would there? We would barely be considering the remaining youngsters for a rookie spot once we are in the second or third round of the rookie draft surely.
