Woodhouse's talk was moderately interesting, plays his cards pretty close but couldn't avoid disclosing some of their thoughts. They were committed to taking Houlihan at first pick in the rookie draft hence no Tim Milera. Thought GWS would take Wilson if he wasn't selected in the PSD. Wanted to stock up on tall players, don't appear to see a need for crumbing forwards. Disappointing really. They do seem to have a policy to have a certain number of taller players on the list and they were following through with that. I was pleased when there were fewer taller players because there are only 6 "tall" positions in a team so I don't know why they need to be about 40% of your list.
Seems limiting to me, overly conservative approach as EH said above.

We have 11 'tall' players - and picked another 2 with Hamp and McGovern.

That makes 13 out of 46 on the list - or 28%

6 out of 22 makes 27%

That's a far cry from 40% - and seems in line with the ratio that we have on the field.

seriously the number of players drafted from wa (another 14 in the PSD and rookie draft) is a great result for our development systems. East freo and the tiggers must have close to a an afl side spread across australia. surely time to change the zones to help even out the wafl competition.

Neates (to my knowledge) hasn't been playing in the WAFL as a small forward, so not sure if WC plans to use him in this way.

prospective small forwards that are afl listed often play more in the midfield at wafl level as they can be more of use and accumulate there - usually because they are a cut above. even lecras played plenty of games for west perth in the midfield when he was out of the team earlier on in his eagles career, but when he was in the senior team played forward pocket. neates could indeed be our small forward saviour and has plenty of pace and skill. and i believe in lewis broome being very handy in the nearer future than most here think. hope one of these guys bobs up and lecca goes back to the future and gets some more time on ball

Oh, and small crumbing forwards are not a critical ingredient in a flag winning team. Just see Collingwood and L Davis - he was critical wasn't he? They're merely icing on the cake, IMO. Plus, why recruit one when we have Masten.

Small forwards rarely play big games in GF's where as players such as a Didak, Rioli, Steve Johnson can still add X Factor and goal kicking but also have a bit of size about them, can take a knock or two and play further up the ground.

Jeff Farmer in the GF v Essendon = failed.

Leon Davis = fail.

And yes, previously we have drafted Broome, Weedon, Hams and Neates. Thats 4 quick smaller players who can play forward.

Happy with Wilson and picking up project KP's in Hamps and McGovern is really to help counter the delisting of Hansen, Notte, Sullivan and Spangher.

Pleased with who we got from the rookie draft

Rerally interested to see Hamp's progress. Can see him as a future third tall forward. Or a lead up CHF like Hansen played if we need a player like that in the future. Good endurance just hope he gets greater chances with the Tigers league side next year. Hamp and Darling future key position forwards???

Havent seen McGovern so cant comment greatly on him. Would've loved Chalwell, he slipped through completely did he not?

One stat I find interesting is that out of 7 picks (3 ND, 1 PSD, 3 RD), we only drafted 2 midfielders, and one of them was Houlihan. Amazing show of support in our midfield.

True but the types of players we moved off our main list were mainly talls:

Hansen, Notte, Spangher, Sullivan (elevated rookie) and McKinely, all tall a none of these were mids.

We then elevated Stevenson and Strijk who can both play midfield, drafted Gaff at 4 and then Darling who may have a trot through the middle as well or take Stijk's HFF. After Darling we went tall.

We are hoping Kerr can get fit, same with Butler and still we have fringe mids in Stevens, Smith, Neates, J Jones plus JON as depth options. This is JON make or break year so if the guy has what it takes he will force his way into the side at some stage.

So onto the main list available for selection round 1 we added mids in Gaff, Stevenson, Strijk and Darling. And who knows really where Wilson and Brennan will end up playing once developed.

On a slightly different topic, does anyone know how much WAFL clubs receive for having a player rookie listed? East Freo must be in for a bit of cash with Cooyou, Menegola, Johannison and Perham rookied on top of Swallow, Cripps, Fasolo, Brennan and Schofield in the ND.

I've seen a little bit of both of these guys, I'd certainly rate Chalwell higher at this stage. Very unlucky not to get picked up. But with Woodhouse saying McGovern hasn't been in the system long or done a pre-season I guess it was a punt worth taking. McGovern mostly played ruck at colts level, similar to Chalwell in that they played ruck when their 'preferred' position going on the WAFL/AFL level would be elsewhere.

It's my view that any decent crumbing forward - ends up moving to the midfield anyway. Excluding Matera who was more a full forward - our best crumber we've had was Cousins and Evans. Both of those blokes were midfielders. (Though evans body relegated him to a pocket)

Neates has been playing wing and half forward for Claremont, Weedon the same - if they are any good they'll do well in a pocket and progress to the midfield. Everyone wants a Rioli - and guess what? he'll move into the midfield at first opportunity.

The last time I can remember a genuine pocket affecting a GF was Rioli in 2008 and Tony Evans in 1992 and 1994.

All of this is reasonable, but I don't know that it suggests we have a surplus of crumbing prospects.

In the end we'll be building for a while and talls take longer to develop, so it probably makes sense to load up with them now.

Longer term I reckon quick small forwards are becoming an increasingly important part of the game, and depending on how Broome et al turn out I think we'll need at least another one.

If Hansen Had agreed to retire we wouldn't of delisted houlihan then we could of got milera with our first pick

Even if he'd agreed to retire (as Stenglein did 12 months earlier) we still would have had to wait until after the ND to delist him to avoid his payout going into the 2010 cap.

Makes sense, these realy are speculative picks, and with WA players we have extensive research on them and don't have to worry about relocation expenses, etc. Surprised we didn't look at more mature rookies (Phillips, Ninyette, Yu, Blackwell), and especially disappointed we didn't get Blight or Notte.

And I agree with him, actually its a bit of a Eagles trait for a while that we don't play / draft small crumbing forwards who can't really play elsewhere.

Frodo Matera was probably the only one and he was an absolute gun.

Tony Evans could run through the midfield, same with Chris Lewis.

Armstrong I suppose was one dimentional but then again he racked up big posessions playing mid in the WAFL and he wasn't going to displace Kerr, Cousins or Judd from our midfield.

So do any other past Eagle small forwards stand out?

Sure there are a few midium sized forward in this list and IMO that small crumbing role is basically down to Hams, Neates, Weedon and Broome.

With Hams rookie listed I can see one pocket being used by Shuey and say a Kerr to rotate through the midfield untill Hams becomes available.

They only used 6 of their 8 picks and 2 of those are 2 of the most speculative players I have ever seen. I would have thought they would target Myles Sewell experienced types.

Players they could strongly develop and get up and running to be ahead of the curve by 2013, but then I guess they have next years draft to do that as well???
