Rookie Draft

Tim Milera (Port Adelaide) is still available and is a dead set forward pocket, beautiful kick either foot, fast, great swervability (thanks Go Eagles) and has a build that could slot him straight into WC's line up next year. Check him out.

This draft is looking great, a lot of depth it seems. I agree with those saying we need to prioritise and take Houlihan with a late rookie draft pick, if we lose him (doubtful) then at least we have a decent pool of players left to work with.

I read last week that WCE have committed their first rookie pick on Houlihan

That seems a bit strange, committing before the ND.

Would of thought they would of waited to see who they got in the ND and who was available still for the PSD before committing to Houlihan.
eg, if they got Polec or Isaac Smith then Houlihan becomes less needed.

Would be nice to have a PSD pick. Some decent talent still there.

I like the thought of chalwell but as a list need we really, really need a crumber. Rhys Cooyou or Even a Hayden Yarran even though he isn't specifically a crumber. In saying that i cant remember seeing tim milera going in the main draft. Would really like him. Also in the rookie draft i would definitely use our first pick on houlihan. Linebreaking outside players are still a real list deficiency and he helps cover it. If he can spend the whole preseason with a very major focus on footskills i'll be happy.

I think it would have been a deal with the guy.

Assuring him we'd select him at first opp in the rookie draft as long as he doesn't nominate in the ND

There's still a chance we'll take him in the PSD - worsfold made some cryptic comment at the time that a few things "might unfold"

Neates and Broome

Hams is a small mid too, but both he and Neates are more than capable in the small forward role, with the ability to play up the ground. As long as Hams gets a guernsey I'm not too fussed about the small forward role. I like the look of Cooyou, and think he should be a get. I think he can become a good wing/HFF/FP, looks intense, smooth and neat. Broome is the prototype small forward. What we're lacking is atacking mids/wingmen on our list (aka goal kicking mids).

Neates is a small midfielder and i dont think broome will make it. He's just coming from too far back.

Wont disagree with Broome a long way back but that is what he was drafted for and credit for his finals appearances.
Neates may be a midfielder as was Hams but this doesnt mean he isnt a crumber.
He knows where to position himself, has great speed and is a good kick for goal. This is a crumber. Jeff Garlett and Eddie Betts are good crumbers who were also midfielders in juniors.
Neates is our main hope.

Crumbers are over rated Phil. Everyone who has an ounce of football ability can crumb. If they're worth their salt they can move to the midfield as well. All you need is someone to contest the ball when it hits the ground, apply defensive pressure. I don't mind putting them on the rookie list, or take them low in the draft, but it is a mental application, lock the ball in. Just my view. :)

Swannies when i used to play i was an undersized FF or a crumbing forward pocket depending on the level of competition. I probably do overrate the need for crumbing forwards as i am one myself.

The one thing i will say is this though the same skill that makes a good midfielder at stoppages is the same that makes a great crumber. Being able to read the lay of the ball and whats going to happen before others do. I dont care if they are a midfielder, a defender or a forward but we need a small guy in that forward line who not only can read the ball off better than most but they need a good goal sense as well.

Delist Hansen

PSD: Andreoli
Rookie: Cooyou, Chalwell, Houlihan/Eades/Yarran

Fix up the lack of midfield speed.

Happy to gamble on Houlihan lasting. If someone else picks up Houlihan we he should still be off our salary cap for 2011. No reason not to delist Hansen or Nicoski.

The person most disappointed with the draft should be Wilson. Upgrade rookie but may not be on the senior list long if Darling or Lycett stamps their spot for FF.

That's exactly what I'm saying Phil. Don't draft specifically only for crumbing, you'll box yourself into a corner.

While i agree swannies i think its 1 third of the equation for a quality small forward.

Crumbing ability
Defensive pressure
Goal awareness

Im just of the opinion we dont have guys with all 3 as a package. We really only need 1 more on the list but i think its a major list need.

Salary cap shouldn't be an issue if there is good negotiation from the eagles management. Get a couple of guys to reduce pay for 2011 and increase in 2012. Will be flooded with money at the end of this year from delistings. All you need is 40-50k for one pick for preseason draft.
e.g. Kerr has been swimming in money for doing jack shit in the last two years. He owes the club.

People still available: Andreoli, Chalwell, Menegola, Wilson, Hamp, Blight, Cooyou, Yarran, Eades, Brookes, I Stevens, Sweet, Von Bertouch (?), Solly, Tim and Terry Milera, Fitzgerald, Sewell.

This would be my ideal result in the PSD (assuming we delist Hansen) and RD:

PSD: Chalwell

RD #1: I Stevens
RD #2: Cooyou
RD #3: Brookes/Andreoli

But this is what I think will happen, if we're lucky:

PSD: Cooyou

RD #1: Houlihan
RD #2: Chalwell
RD #3: Yarran
