Rookie Draft

Ive seen it a thousand times Archie.
A kid who has talent up the wazoo and has been proclaimed as a prodigy losses focas and interest and wants to be "Normal" and the kids who want to be superstars but dont have the talent end up being your every day joe bloggs.

Chris Judd as good as he is, I doubt would be the best player in the country if every prodigy had fullfilled their potentual. Their are probably better players out their that are not even playing. (i know bullsh*t right but wait)
Example-
I played cricket with a kid at a fairly high level who is probably without a doubt the best bowler I have ever faced, ( and Ive faced top line WACA playing bowlers) this kid was also at 1 time on the Swans Colts list at the same time, and had a huge future ahead of him. However he hated the limelight and hated the pressure of expectation so after quiting footy to play Only Cricket (thinking it would be less pressure) he found himself wanting to play in leagues well below his ability but the club wanted to play him at the highest level Possible as he would still dominate.
After last season he stopped training, stopped showing up to club functions and has now gone bush and started a "Crap" Job because their he is a Nobody and feels so much better about himself.
Thats fine, we all respect his reasons but as friends and Mentors we know that in 3 or 4 years when he does find his love of sport again it will be way too late and his surpreme talent has gone to waste.

Thats what I mean by better then Judd.

So he was better than Judd cos he killed you and didn't reach his potential since? That is crap. If Judd played against you, you would still be creaming your pants over it. Even in high school he was next level awesome. It was only his dodgy shoulders that brought him down to our pick.

Your reading too much into the whole Judd name being dropped here. The point he's making is that being talented doesn't mean your going to make it, it also requires hard work, discipline and dedication to make your dream come true. Some players have all the skill in world but don't have the desire or drive to fulfil their potential.

I rate him above all those players left in the rookie draft, bar 3 or 4, and I would have taken him ahead of half of those selected from 40 onwards in the ND. And nothing to do with him being a Swans boy.

Who would you have as the top 10 midfielders in the rookie draft then?

I really like Outridge, would just like to know some in depth analysis on him..

Blayne Wilson looks like he's a lock for our PSD pick which I'm really happy about. Very underrated player and is a bargain here. Has elite kicking and although we have players that can play his role, he can only make the team better if he's playing instead of someone else thats not as good.

If Isaiah Stevens is available for our first rookie pick I think we have to take him. He's the perfect rookie. High risk high reward. Oozes talent and X-Factor and if he reaches his potential, watch out. I'm worried were going to overlook him or other great prospects by taking Houlihan here, when he'll probably last to either our 2nd or 3rd round picks.

After this it gets hard, as theres no way to know who'll still be available due to the unpredictability of the rookie draft. But you'd think we'd still be able to get a good player such as Eades, Chalwell, Menegola, Hamp, Brookes, Andreoli... but I think we'll take Houlihan here, after taking Stevens at our first rookie pick.

Then it's impossible to know who we'll get at our 3rd rookie pick. I like the look of Kiefer Yu, and there's a good chance he'll be available too.

Dream draft:
PSD - B Wilson
RD 1 - I Stevens
RD 2 - T Chalwell
RD 3 - J Eades

What I think will happen:
PSD - B Wilson
RD 1 - T Houlihan
RD 2 - J Eades
RD 3 - K Yu

EDIT: Forgot about Tim Milera, would love him at our first rookie pick, over Stevens. Hayden Yarran would also be good at some point.

I think what we need is a spring-heeled-jack like Liam Jurrah, some real x-factor for half-forward or forward pocket. Then our squad would be pretty much complete. Are there any out there? I've heard Stevens name tossed about a bit - is he like Jurrah at all?

oh, so someone like a.... naitanui???

In the latest "Permission to train" list Freo have Blight, Menagola, Monaco training with them among many others.

We only have Wilson and Houlihan.

We never seem to have many training with us during the pre-season compared to other sides, is it about keeping our cards close, why wouldn't we want to get first hand looks at some of these kids prior to the rookie draft?

I wouldn't read too much into it, Essendon had Michael Barlow training with them last year and look how that turned out

Blight vs Wilson. Who do we want more?

Didn't Blight get delisted from another club? If he isn't good enough for someone else then why is he good enough for us? Very few players that have been delisted have turned out to be any good at another club.

EDIT: If Blight wasn't from WA, would he even be in this discussion? I'm not necessarily saying I don't rate him, I don't know enough about him.

Blight was homesick and walked

Both are defenders but blight would be run and carry defender where Wilson is more stand and deliver - excellent disposal by hand and foot and will delivery to the free man in space.

Based on homesickness no club other than Wa will be interested so we only have to beat fremantle to him - if we want him?

PSD - Wilson

Rookie
Blight ? chalwell - we were after talls
Eades
Houlihan

As long as we pick up Eades & Chalwell I'll be happy. We desperately need a player like Eades crumbing in the FP complementing Hams on the other side.

I'm not terribly impressed about either of those players.

Underdog

Just interested in why you aren't impressed in either of these players? Thought the limited video of both was actually reasonably impressive - although you may have seen more of them than myself. Not trying to have a go - just interested why you thought otherwise?

Royal Eagle had this to say about Chalwell

Tyler Chalwell East Fremantle 193cm 89kg's

Have watched Tyler all year in the colts, was desperately unlucky not to make the WA under 18 side like a lot of his east freo team mates from the country.

Was best on ground in the colts grand final dominating in the back half.

Every year there is country kids that miss out on the side that should have been in the side, and Brad Wirra has said as much about Tyler this year.

He has played as a tall utility for east freo from full foward to ruck the wing, full back and centre half back.

In my opinion the backline particularly CHB is his best position.

He is very attacking and has a strong frame that he is not afraid to use.
His reading of the play and marking is a feature of his game.
His kicking is excellent and has great awareness, rarely if ever gets caught.
He had very good state screening results very like Harry Taylor, a previous left field selection by Wells.

Outstanding beep of 14.5 and very good 20 metre time as well.

I have had a long look at other available backman, and to me is the best of rest. Maybe a reach at this selection but have a strong feeling he will justify his selection by becoming a very good AFL footballer.

I prefer rhys cooyou or tim milera over eades as small forwards.

PSD Wilson
R1 Cooyou
R2 Stevens
R3 Houlihan

 Have you seen him play? Played more as a leading forward in the games I've seen him play. Very Lynchesque. I don't see him as a small forward, just as I don't see Stevens as a small forward. I guess they can adapt their game to crumb and be predatory.

One guy who is not being talked about a lot, in a small forward role, is Elisseou. I liked what I have seen from him roving across half forward and his delivery is pretty good too.

I dont want cooyou or stevens as small forwards. I want milera as a small forward and either cooyou as a lead up medium forward or stevens as a high leaping medium forward.
