Rookie Draft

We've got a number of blokes who can play small forward.

You really only have room for one genuine pocket - and we've recruited a number of blokes who could fill that role - at least until they mature to become midfielders

Neates, Broomes, Weedon, Hams - how many do you want to fill one position?

Definitely :thumbsu:

One stat I find interesting is that out of 7 picks (3 ND, 1 PSD, 3 RD), we only drafted 2 midfielders, and one of them was Houlihan. Amazing show of support in our midfield.

Stupid waste of a pick. What have they got against small, pacy players who can kick goals?

top marks for negativity and short sightedness. we now have four genuine ruckmen sized players - two are kids who have never played AFL, one is a kid and one is aging and injury prone. One is also a possible wild card key forward and GWS target. Hardly over stocked

last year we stocked up on fast small forwards.

We appeared to have selected a back, a foward, a fast wingman and a ruckman. all appear athletic and quicker rather than slower with skill. Move the ball with skill and you play fast!!!

balanced some would say

Perhaps it's either our recruiters and scouts struggle to identify the talent or there are simply better players available.
Tired of the "best player available" principle applied mechanistically without subtlety. Has resulted in an unbalanced list that's too tall, too slow, too inside, and it's continuing on. Has to be fed into the equation as a crucial element but other factors need to be considered also. What would we give to get J Garlett now and we could have had him as a rookie pick two years ago? I agree with picking Wilson in the PSD on the "good player available" principle in the PSD, even though he plays in an already oversupplied position, but I desperately wanted to see some fast, outside forward type players in the rookie draft and it just hasn't happened. Cannot see the need for a speculative ruck pick especially after getting Lycett in the ND. So what if other teams have 4 or 5 rucks on the list, they can't play them e.g. Carlton. One day the penny might drop, I can only hope.

We lost/cut Spangher, Wilkes, Notte, McKinley and Hansen so we were always going to get some tall cover.

We stocked up on small quick types last year with Neates, Broome and Weedon still yet to play a game, as well as Strijk and Hams. I'm guessing the club is backing those guys this year.

Neates (to my knowledge) hasn't been playing in the WAFL as a small forward, so not sure if WC plans to use him in this way.

Broomes is a long way off.

Weedon doesn't seem a genuine crumber to me, more a smooth moving lead-up/HF type.

Hams has performed the role well, but you couldn't say he has electrifying pace or amazing creativity around goal.

So you could make certainly make the argument that we could use an other quick small forward, at least until Broome stacks on some kilos. Whether there was any available that were worth picking, I don't know.

There is a difference between having 5 gun rucks - and 5 guys who can ruck.

Hawthorn had 6 ruckmen on their list this year and were forced to ruck Hodge and Roughead.

Freo were forced to ruck Silvagni.

I'd rather pick a ruckman and allow Kennedy to stay at CHF.

The need for numerous outside guys who can run quick is a fallacy - you might need one or two and that's about it. The rest you need blokes who can win the ball and use it well. If you can snag a bloke like Judd who was lightning quick and a ballwinner than you have a star.

Who the hell is Jeremy McGovern?

McGovern is a decent pick, I reckon. Like what he can do.

McGovern is a good pick up . I have watched the Claremont colts and Jeremy has played well. I dont see him as a AFL ruckman but he is a KPP. In the second semi C v EF he did a number on Chalwell. McGovern is very strong in the air and has sticky fingers.

I know that many of you will be disapointed but I am happy with this pick.

Albeit .... we didnt address our small crumbing forward.

Funny, the first thing I thought is Monocle will like this one! :D

I'm staggered at GWS's picks.

Oh, and small crumbing forwards are not a critical ingredient in a flag winning team. Just see Collingwood and L Davis - he was critical wasn't he? They're merely icing on the cake, IMO. Plus, why recruit one when we have Masten. :D

Thanks for the affirmation. Don't see rucks as the most important part of the game. We had arguably the best ruck combo in the comp this year and won 4 games and finished stone, cold, motherless last. What does that tell you? 4 or more rucks is a waste IMO. Best teams have deep midfields and goalkickers (St Kilda being the exception).

It's my view that any decent crumbing forward - ends up moving to the midfield anyway. Excluding Matera who was more a full forward - our best crumber we've had was Cousins and Evans. Both of those blokes were midfielders. (Though evans body relegated him to a pocket)

Neates has been playing wing and half forward for Claremont, Weedon the same - if they are any good they'll do well in a pocket and progress to the midfield. Everyone wants a Rioli - and guess what? he'll move into the midfield at first opportunity.

The last time I can remember a genuine pocket affecting a GF was Rioli in 2008 and Tony Evans in 1992 and 1994.

Hard to get excited about this result really. Another backman, an unknown ruckman, another key forward plus Houlihan.

I was certain we were going to target at least one small forward, given our supposed interest in Ugle and Cooyou in the ND it seems strange that we didn't.

Well summarised. My thoughts and feelings exactly.
