Rookie Draft

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

With us looking like going for experience in the RD again, I've listed a few names that I think we may look at;

Dan Nicholson
Tom Durwood
Jon Beech
Aaron Elari
Kory Beard
Callum Sinclair
Taylor Gilchrist
Archie Longbottom
Aaron Sweet
Jarrod Blight

any others that you think fit our drafting policy?

Don't know much about how the rookie draft works. I'd have thought that we'd be interested in like Hamp and Chalwell.

Quite a few people were saying that one or the other of them would end up as one of our picks in the ND. But they're still there.

Is there any reason that neither of them are training with us? Are we looking at Monaco and Menegola because we're not sure if we want them (Monaco or Menegola) yet?

We've done really well in past years with WA guys who were thought to be ND chances but didn't get picked up, that we managed to land as rookies (e.g. DeBoer, Pearce).

My hope is that we already know we want Chalwell or Hamp if they're not already picked up, and are looking closer to see if Monaco or Menegola are good plan B options if they're not. If someone is training with us will that make them more of a target for poaching by another club?

In essence, what I'm asking is what do Monaco and Menegola have that would make us take them over Hamp and Chalwell? Or are we conceding that someone else is going to pinch them (e.g. GWS... 8 picks) before we can get them?

Strobe great points. I have been wondering too. I spoke to Chalwell at EF training and he has heard nothing at all from Freo. In my book Id rate them Chalwell, Menegola, Hamp then Monaco. I think Chalwell has nothing but upside but I believe clubs have been put off because he played mostly in the ruck, He averaged 18 possessions per game, Best for EF in colts GF, colts team of the year, testrd gr8 at state combine 193cm 14.5 beep, equal best running leap from national combine, played 3 Ressie games and got in the best players in 2 of them yet freo show no interest, why not get him and Hamp to train and compare them. I think West Coast and Geelong are keen

Just a question which rookies would you rather have had on the senior list than Hinkley if any? In other words knowing who is available now would you have delisted Hinkley and who would you have taken in the draft.

(Sorry Chris25)

I would have Monaco and Blayne Wilson ahead of Hinkley.

Wait a minute! We all know the one thing we won't need in the future! players that can't read the play. That's you, Hinkley! (aside to Chris25) I'm terribly sorry. (aloud) Hinkley is the only useless person left on the senior list. If anyone gets delisted, it should be him. (aside) I'm sorry, please forgive me. (aloud) So let's kick Hinkley out. (aside) Sorry.

I'm not a Hinkley fan; he was very lucky to receive another contract. However, a few seasons ago he was just as highly rated - actually given he went in the second round, even more highly rated - than every single player who is left in the rookie draft at the same age.

Not only are there no guarantee that any of these 'future superstars' still available, will be better than Hinkley, if anything, they are more likely to be worse players.

My two cents worth would be that if the coaching staff deemed him worthy of another contract then I am happy with that.
Came over with good credentials but hasn't quite lived up to his 2nd round pick expectations.
Has bulked his body up quite a bit in the last season & a half so , at the age of 21 odd , I reckon he might start to get the confidence that the football department saw in him to give him another contract.
The great thing about our club now is the depth that we are building at all positions . So for me I am happy to have him at our club & support him in his endeavours.
Gone are the days where after our top 25 we dropped off considerably .

So for me its :
Bucovaz
Ruffles
Menagola

Hinkley deserves his spot. I predict his speed will be important next season, particularly if we actually develop him into a midfielder/tagger (like we should). And I would caution against judging him based on being a second round pick, he was considered somewhat of a reach given how early we took him.

Given who we have training with us at the moment though, I would not have kept Pearce or guaranteed Ruffles a spot.

I realise we reached for him; we were in the middle of a 'we need some speed in the midfield' panic. Did we reach more for him than we would've had we taken one of the rookies remaining this year, in the second round though?

It's all relative. People can talk up how good players remaining this year are - or how much better than senior listed players they are - but every single player on our list was a highly rated junior at some point. Monaco, Wilson, whoever, are no different than an 18 year old Hinkley.

A bit sad for Peel to have O'Brien leave the club. The Thunder will always struggle to attract players away from Perth city so they rely heavily on ex-AFL listed players who have come through/from Peel to return and play out their career there. And the fact that he'll be taking his brother Rory with him hurts them further. Oh well, on the positive side at least they're down one injury prone player and another bloke whose ego wouldn't fit in an A380.

Watched a lot of Swans games over last couple of years and Hinkley is lucky to be in their best 22, let alone Freo's top 30. I have yet to see this blistering speed everyone talks and writes about. Can't kick and does not have natural footy nous. Should have been cut.

As for Ruffles, O'Brien and Bucovaz - non of them will be elite players or hold down a best 22 spot, so time to cut them loose and invest in three new kids, in the hope of getting a couple of elite players.

Otherwise your drafting has been good, with blend of experience and youth. Starting to build good depth.
The team needs luck with injury, the kids develop further with a top four spot possible.

Freo played good footy last year - great to watch. Collingwood will be the yard stick again and here is hoping the mob down the road get the wooden spoon again.

Agree with most of this, except I still believe Ruffles has the talent, courage and attitude to be at least a solid AFL performer. Whether he can stay fir is the big question now.

Chris ,I reckon your man Roberts might grab one of the spots, Nice size ,good pace and skills and
he seems to be getting specialised skills training and goal kicking practice that the rest of the hopefulls arent getting.

I predict he'll play no more than 3 games next season (look to last months draft for our most sought after traits...). Speed is nothing if you've proved you can run it out and kick to an opposition player at blistering pace, it's a proven massive dampener to onfield morale to have to start running the other way due to repeated unforced skill errors, just look up the road for the best example.

If his contract expired this year instead of last year he'd have been cut. when his contract expires nesxt year he won't make the cut.

I think it will be a huge challenge for him to develop as a run-with player. From what I've seen, and reviews from Swannies he lacks the discipline to stick with his man.

As for the pace, well Peake had that in spades and look how that turned out :p

I'm hoping to be surprised though, if he can actually put it all together for once he may be worth keeping when his contract expires.

I just don't see why Hinkley would have been so attractive to have warranted a spot on the senior list, I would have been all for the rookie list treatment that Buco and Ruffles received. I just can't see any other club stealing him from us or why we would care that much if they did, I mean it's not like fills any glaring specific needs on our list.

The only reasons I can see is that the club was worried about being too 1-2 year top-heavy or Hinkley saying that he wouldn't accept a rookie spot.

In answer to what is the difference with Hinkley now and this year's untried kids, Hinkley has had a chance to show something and in my view hasn't. Why not send him to the rookie list and try and get another Roberton or Crichton who are already better than him.

Hinkley is a HACK

full stop

Correct me if I am wrong but his contract was up & we signed him for another year.
Hence my faith in what the football department sees in his continued development.
Again .....support our players.
A point in case is the shite that McPhee copped early & he , in the end , showed a lot of his true worth.
His 1%ers were good all year.
Lets afford all our list players the same support.
