I don't think we've ever had a thread on this topic which is rather interesting for me. The four players on our current rookie list are:

Dean Buszan
Andrew McCarrey
Zac Beeck
Kris Miller

I know a bit about Buszan and McCarrey having both seeing em play but not much about Beeck and Miller. Whats the chances of them making AFL level? Also, how many players are allowed to be on a rookie list?

Players that have been previously on our rookie list:

1997 – Paul Blair (Subiaco), Todd Nener (East Perth), Trent Simpson (Subiaco), Ryan Webb (West Perth)

1998 – Laurie Bellotti (Claremont), Conrad Chambers (East Fremantle), Chad Fletcher (Subiaco), Todd Nener (East Perth), Trent Simpson (Subiaco), Heath Younie (Murray Bushrangers)

1999 – Simon Duckworth (West Perth), Mark Pearson (West Perth), Andrew Taylor (Perth), Heath Younie (Murray Bushrangers)

2000 – Dean Cox (East Perth), Simon Duckworth (West Perth), Kasey Green (East Fremantle), Toby McGrath (South Fremantle)

The success rate is not particularly high as seen from above. Only three from the past few years are still on our list. What do you think of this year's crop, how many will get promoted? For me, I can only see Buszan and McCarrey being possibilities.

Also what are the conditions for rookies at clubs. How is their wage determined and how long do they stay? Is it a one year basis? Interested to see everyone else's thoughts.

IMHO:

Dean Buszan: good hands, inaccurate kick, seems a nice guy. I've advocated him being promoted and given a chance already this year, though with Scotty and Willo we're already well served (I think) with FFs. I'd play them all up there and terrify the opposition!

Andrew McCarrey: haven't seen much of him and he's pretty young I think, so we'll see how he develops in the WAFL. The couple of games I have seen, he didn't make much of an impression.

Zac Beeck: never seen him play, seems to be permanently injured (typical Eagle?)

Kris Miller: gets a lot of the ball, but doesn't seem to do a great deal with it for mine. Played ok in the pre-season against St Kilda, but hasn't impressed that much with East Freo in recent weeks.

On the others:
1997 – Saw Todd Nener (East Perth) play in a practice game against Richmond at Waverly some years ago. Big bloke - looked pretty good that day

Trent Simpson (Subiaco) I think was the smoker (as opposed to the smokey) - Mick said he was a good kid but had smoked a lot as a kid and his fitness was such that he couldn't run out a full game.

1998 – Laurie Bellotti (Claremont) - good WAFL player and nice guy too

Chad Fletcher (Subiaco) - good player, tough, but very left-sided.

1999 – Simon Duckworth (West Perth) - good WAFL player

2000 – Dean Cox (East Perth) - I reckon he'll be a star, fitness permitting.

I reckon that's not a bad success rate really, when you consider that the draft is such a full time professional thing nowadays and that theoretically all the best players get picked up at 17/18.

But - long live the late developer! And let's hope we get the next Woewodin!

Of all the players on our rookie list from 1997-2000 none of them have gone on to play for other AFL clubs and be a star there, so we haven't given away any talent. The sad thing is that we obviously picked up these kids because they showed some promise, but we never stuck with them to see if they could go all the way.

I'd definately like to see the club keep Buszan and McCarrey for 2002.

How did you find that out, out of interest. Its not as if its the most publicised article in the newspaper:

"Zac Beeck to debut for the Royals Reserves! EXCLUSIVE!"

Vis :p

Zac Beeck

No there was'nt any arcticle on his comeback but I follow the WAFL and I know he was taken off the Eagles injured list last week. Due the the fact that the Royals had a bye he did'nt play last week so I guess he will play reserves this week. Who knows I could be wrong.
I will see if he is listed in the football budget this week.

LOL yeah, I can see that headline in the paper tomorrow with the hot off the press "SUBIACO PLAYER DROPPED FROM COLTS SIDE!"

In the paper last week, it said Perth had dropped McDougall, although he did play for the Demons last week but didn't have the best of games. Know anything about this?

Saw McDougall at Garden City tonight. Doesn't look like he has bulked up at all, not in his arms anyway.
