Can someone who is up to speed with these sorts of things advise on our players who are currently rookie listed?

What happens to these guys next year? Do they have to be re-added to the rookie list?

Say potentially there is interest in one of our currently-listed rookie players from another club, whats to stop them from poaching them from us?

Appreciate your responses :thumbsu:

I believe it's thus:

Any rookie listed player can elect to nominate for the National Draft if they so desire in an attempt to get on a main list. I believe if they do, then they are off the club's rookie list.

A club can retain a rookie without having to go through the draft for a second year (conditional on them still being eligible), but after that second year, all rookies must be either delisted or elevated.

To retain a rookie for additional years, the club has to re-draft them in that year's rookie draft (as per the Eagles drafting Wilkes twice to the rookie list for his third and fourth years after his initial stint. I believe that a player could be nicked by another club with earlier picks (or in the main draft). To prevent that of course, you'd elevate them to the primary list.

I believe the Eagles have to make a call this year on Davis, Wilson, Arrowsmith, Sullivan and Stevenson, while Cockie and Bedford can be retained for a second year if the club and player agree (though I'd guess Bedford would be very lucky to get another season).

As of this year, rookies can also be traded to other clubs, however they must be elevated to their new club's primary list. Additionally, rookies can now be elevated in lieu of national draft picks instead of additional to them.

arrowsmiths contract wont be renewed next year. As reported in the west yesterday

So lets say hypothetically one of our first year rookie players is being targeted by another club. As I understand it from above, if the said rookie wishes to go to that club and nominates for the national draft he may be picked up by that club? Unless of course another club doesnt snap him up first.

Good to see a familiar face on here too Q :)

Completely ignoring the thread topic, welcome back

It's been a long time

I believe that's the case, but I don't think it happens very often as few rookies will turn down a definite second year at their existing club for the lottery of the draft - if they're good enough that they'd be certain to be drafted, they'd probably be good enough to get an elevation anyway.

Cheers. I wander by every now and then

Cheers, just dont have the time (or patience) these days but still browse now and then.

Thanks also Q for the update, tend to agree with your assessment regarding rookies going, just wanted to check though. My curiosity was brought on when I heard a rumor that a certain Melbourne club is very keen on Adam Cockie. One to keep an eye on.

OK, so now we've cleared Arrowsmith and Bedford, plus Fletcher and Wirra, so 4 rookie spots are open.

What are people's thoughts on Luke Pratt, ex Dockers? I'd happily rookie him.

Not worth it Swannies if we go down that path I would rather look at James Thompson back again.

Swannies what do you think of Clinton Garlett ?

Pratty is a small defender, I don't think it would hurt to have him on the rookie list because he's been playing very good football this year.

Been pretty impressed with him at League level tbh. Seems to have a good work ethic and decent skills. Wouldn't harm to rookie him, if he lasts that long. Was AA under age wasn't he?

If you want Luke Pratt you are going to have to use a ND pick on him.

I believe Freo are going down the 3rd year pre-listing path with him.

I wasnt aware you were limited to only 3 2nd year rookies...

http://www.afl.com.au/about/tabid/13532/default.aspx#rookie

A club can retain a maximum of three players on its rookie list for a second season provided it nominates those players at the time of the compulsory list lodgement

My brain hurts... does this effect us in any way or can I go back to sleeping well at night?

Are you able to name which club?

How old is Harley Bennell?

Harley is 16 Lewigie, 2010 Gold Coast target will be top ten.

Already 187cm a mid very very quick and lovely skills, considering he has
had no footy development, ( never been in the state system WA academy) his scope for improvement is huge.

My favourite colts player this year, is a match winner very special kid,
with a good head on his shoulders and is prepared to work hard.

He being awarded a AIS scholarship this year, should help his development.

With his skill and talent and great work rate, cant see him not being a great success.:thumbsu:
