Baguley, Mark
Dalgleish, Lauchlan
Hunter, Hal
Lee, Brendan
Long, Anthony.

Over past few years we have had a large turnover of rookies, with some rookie promtions along the way ie. Crameri, Howlett.

How do you rate our rookies? Who do you see as being re-rookied next year? Who would you like to see on our senior list next year? Who will be delisted? Are there any senior players you would like to see dropped to the rookie list?

Dalgeish has has some nice wraps on him this year, sounds like he is still pretty raw - is he worth an upgrade next year? Baguely seems okay, but would be happy to trade him if anybody offered a national pick, ie Jenkins. Steinberg is one I wouldn't mind seeing rookied rather than delisted or maintained on the senior list - maybe Prismall too depending on his body. Its seems likely that Long will be delisted.

I have little to no expertise on these guys and would like others' opinions/ratings of these blokes.

I'll bite.

Baguley, Has a dip but lacks the skills to become a best 22 player and at 25, his potential is limited. Would re-rookie if no other clubs come chasing, worth persisting with.
Dalgleish, Super quick and knows it and can finish it off. Think he is better than Colyer.
Hunter, Limited ability, big bodied footballer. A bigger version of Jake King. Its a no from me.
Lee, centre square specialist lacking in height but not in ability. Proven gun at state level just needs someone to throw him a bone. He's just not really what we need.
Long, if he could get on the park could be anything. Looks like he finished.

Have seen quite a bit of Bendigo this year, so feel I can make a bit of an informed opinion.

Mark Bauguley (180cm, 83kg, 25 y.o)
Most consistent player at Bendigo in the first half of the year, we have plenty of similar players. Bauguley seems to be getting games on the back of the injuries we have to players in that position. Has shown he can be a solid player at senior level, but will never be a star. Truth be told, I probably wouldn't keep him should he get offers for a senior spot as we have younger guys who can play the same role (Michael Ross, Alex Browne). As mentioned by lemon chicken, he is 25 so the scope for improvement is probably limited, but can play his role when asked. Trade/Keep

Lauchlan Dalgleish (185cm, 77kg, 19 y.o)
Fast becoming a favorite of mine, really like the way he goes about it and is fast developing into a very, very good run and carry player. Hopefully become a 50+ meter player for the Bombers. The quintessential rookie. Keep

Corey DellOllio (175cm, 81kg, 23 y.o)
Im not so sure what to make of Dell. I dont think he can be a best 22 player and is an eerily similar player to monfries (admitedly 'Gus has a role to play as that deffensive forward), both are small marking forwards who need to improve on the roving aspect of there games. IMO, I am not a big fan of him, and would prefer to see a genuine crumber in the side ahead of Dell (and Alwyn Davey). Is good depth who can do a job when asked. Keep

Hal Hunter (187cm, 84kg, 19 y.o)
I do like the way he goes about his business. Is being groomed as a midfielder but i can definitely see him being made into a defender with his hard aggressive approach to the game. Has been on a managed program, so will definitely see him next year on the rookie list. Keep

Brendan Lee (181cm, 78kg, 25 y.o)
I can see the similarities between Brendan Lee and Sam Lonergan. Both inside midfielders with limitations on there kicking. Lee is though, a much publicized accumulator at VFL level. Do like seeing him play forward at VFL level and doing well. Would not at all see him on a senior list next year, be it with us or somewhere else. I do think he has limitations and is not the answer to our long term A - grade midfielder problem but could be a stop gap till the next gen guys come through. Trade/Keep

Anthony Long (187cm, 81kg, 21 y.o)
What could have been had the body held together? Delist

That would leave us with:

Trade/Delist:
- Anthony Long
- Brendan Lee
- Mark Bauguley

Keep:
- Lauchlan Dalgleish
- Corey DellOllio
- Hal Hunter

In next years rookie draft, I would love to see us pick up a project KPP, an inside ball winner we can develop on the rookie list and perhaps a small forward.

Recent use of the rookie list has been exceptional (Crameri, Howlett, Hardingham, Hibberd all clearly best 22 players).

Nothing to suggest that any of the rookie selections of last year were a mistake either.

Hunter and Dalgleish seem to have met all expectations considering that they are both long term projects.

Lee and Baguley have been the best performed Bendigo players with the latter having performed solidly enough at AFL to be a comfortable selection if the need arises.

Dell'Olio can play a role at AFL level and has done so for a large part of the year.

Can anyone really predict that Long's body is simply not capable?

If I had to choose between one of Baguley and Dell'Olio I'd go with Baguley.

What do people think about picking up those speculative project players in this years rookie draft?

Would prefer to see guys like Browne, Ross getting games ahead of guys like Bauguley next year (as good as Bags has been).

only two certainties imo. It's all over for Longy, and Hunter will be at the club for 2013. the others could be delisted, traded or promoted depending on end-of-year events. There are good reasons to keep all as rookies, less clear that any should be elevated and some might attract interest from other clubs.

Dell threatens to break games open at VFL but it never quite eventuates, has lovely skills but it makes his errors all the more surprising.

Bags is consistent week after week but imo doesn't have a standout attribute. solid player, as we are seeing this year is adequate cover for injury in a crisis but not going to blossom into best 22 imo. great competitor though.

Lee is a magnet, pure and simple. two questions over him for me - does he cover the ground well enough to cope at AFL, and can he be effective when not on the ball on a flank or pocket. I don't think he's the free running player that Barlow is, so would be mainly inside.I keep changing my mind on whether he would offer something excellent at senior level or not but is a really pure inside midfielder though.

Dalgleish is quite mature body-wise. far more so than merrett and kav. not 100% sold on him like a few others are. not a big ball winner as yet, and has looked reticent to really take the game on and use his fabled pace. I can only recall two or three times all season where he has really hit the button and torched it up. one in particular finished with a drilled pass to gumby at vic park, iirc, very impressive. he's not particularly great in the congestion either. worth keeping though, i suspect it's just a confidence thing.

Dell's lack of pace and distance on his kicks is a worry IMO. Smart player though, and I do like him, but not sure there's a spot for him when we are close to full strength as on paper at least it would seem to make sense to surround our talls with quicker types (e.g. Davey, Jetta, Reimers & Winderlich).

Would like to keep him on the rookie list but would be very hesitant to automatically upgrade him.

Can someone fill me in on longs injury status?

I think hunter will get another year on the rookie list, judging by the way the coaches speak of him and his age.

Dell'olio is a tricky one. I find him to be a smart footballer that knows how to get to the right spots to crumb a goal, but he seems to be a one trick pony which you dont see alot of these days in the afl. I would keep him on the rookie list to see if he can develop his game further.

I dont think lee will be there next year and baguley could earn a senior spot for depth.

IMO Lee has the most chance of becoming a real good player at the level.

Dell is ho hum. Baggers tries but is never going to be your premiership player. Unfortunately for Lee, he's come into a midfield that has the plodding midfield ball magnet covered. Having said that, I still think he'd be a chance to play in our best 22 if given the chance. He certainly won't be delisted but is every chance to be taken by another club in the national draft or traded ala Jenkins last year.

Dalglish interests me. Looks to have some real tools I'd say worth a spot next year.

In summary for mine:

Dell, No
Lee, Yes
Baggers, No
Long No
Dalglish: Maybe
Hunter: No.

Hunter will stay, coaches love him, re-rookie.
Long is gone.
Would be disappointed if dell gets upgraded, it's not really a need of ours, re-rookie.
Lee could get a senior spot elsewhere, trade piece/re-rookie.
I would upgrade Baugley, seems the perfect utility, has played forward for frankston, played back this year, and could push into the midfield for a run with role IMO.
Dalgleish. keep, progressing really nicely along with merrett (both still skinny as).

I say long goes, and then another 2 go as well (through various means).

say we bring in 3 new rookies, for me, they would be a kpd, a fast winger type with a long kick (80 metre player, as they are called) and Ben Duscher, the man is way too good for the VFL.
