Basically yes. Gibbs is the player he is based on talent. His issue is not development it is limitations in his ability. He's a decenty player but he has no weapons. I watched him with interest (on TV) in the SANFL in his pre draft year. I saw a good young player who was competent at everything but mever looked like he'd be that damaging. He can play better than he is now and I suspect he will when he signs his contract (or goes to Adlelaide) but no matter which development program he entered he'd be about where he is now.

As I said, talent is the imperative. Talent covers more than pace and footskills though. Nick Maxwell isnt a develpment program product he is a Nick Maxwell determination product.

What our development program does achieve IMO is acceleration of the talent realising it's potential and ensure when the chance comes they are mentally ready and ubnderstand what is required. The more time that passes the less impact that has.
Total and absolute agreement with the bolded, Nick WILLED his was to success. No finer example of determination and application leading to success in modern day football that I'm aware of.

I disagree and more importantly I believe if we were the team with that pick we wouldn't have drafted Byce Gibbs.
Gibbs was so far an away the rightful no.1 draft pick in that draft, every team would have taken him.

I couldn't disagree more on drafting>development at the top end of the draft. Drafting is obviously extremely important, but development of the player is critical. Scully, trengove, Gibbs and Kreuzer are prime examples.

I guess we need to agree to disagree, I for one don't believe Gibbs has gotten the best out of his ability so far.

It did amuse me that ODN had to remind Carltank posters on the Carltank board that it is not, in fact, the Collingwood Lite board.

On Gibbs, it's very hard to be certain, but I tend to also think that we would have drafted him if we had the #1 pick. He was a very, very safe bet to be at least a very good player. Who knows how much more we might have gotten out of him?

What did they say about our rookies on the Carlton board? We're they abusing there players or ours?

Upon reflection I can see why the thread was closed.

Bleh, that's enough thinking about them. Wouldn't want to catch mediocre.
