Rookies

IMO, you guys won't regret taking Smith. I believe he is a better player than a lot of the Qlders drafted in the ND and I had him ranked as the best Qlder available in the rookie draft. He has a bit of magic about him. He might start as a mid sized forward but he has the engine to play on ball.

As for why we didn't put him on a priority list, a lot of us are asking the same question.

appreciate the info:thumbsu:

Foster Stats
20 games this year, 12.35 kicks per game, 8.85 hb per game, 3.4 mks per game, 0.5 goals per game.
2 games over 20 kicks, 7 games over 10 hand balls, twice 2 goals. Not outstanding, but he did have to play for East Freo!

That's not too bad considering the opposition regularly had the ball twice as much as the poor old Gummies... :(

Read on DL, that Jamie McNamara from EF that went to the weags with their first pick is a staunch Freo supporter. :thumbsu:

My condolensces are with him and his family at this most difficult time for him. It will hurt the first few times he has to kit up in bluenyella... :thumbsd:

Enough out of you dogs, win a few games and that somehow makes up for decades of being our cannon fodder.

Perhaps you can refresh me your holiness how many of us Sharks are playing AFL - bit hard to beat you when we're being gutted every year

True dat. My feelings towards East Freo have mellowed somewhat over the past few years - they are part of Freo footy after all... that and my turncoat son... :o They do a pretty good job of supplying AFL players all round the nation.... but Souths do too. We've got players all over the place.

Back to Foster - r/u to Woewodin in the Sharks B&F this year, I hear. :thumbsu:

IP you're going soft.
Tell Freo Shark to jam it ;)

yep. Pick 52 is Benet Copping.

Bad luck to Dean Kelly. Missed out completely...

What a disgrace

Benet is a waste of space :thumbsd:

I see all these talented kids like Hurley, Wilson and Rischbieth not getting picked up and then I see Benet gets picked up by Freo, delisted, then back as a Rookie. :thumbsd:

In all honesty, Benet wouldn't even get a league game at Sturt. No good.

Expect him to get injured and not play one game of footy in 07 in any grade.

In this article from the 25/11 Smith talks about a call from a mystery caller identifying himself as a Freo recruiter saying they may pick him up in the national draft. Smart must be stoked to get him via the rookie draft.

“They’ve apparently been up to Queensland 13 times this year and seen me play numerous times over that period and were happy with how I was going. He told me he probably knows my game better than I do myself.”

Hey fryingpan, you are a talent scout right ?

How many times did you see him play or train last year.

Bahaha I have nothing against Freo mate, but picking Copping is HUGE mistake!!

I'm a Sturt member and also have a brother and cousin that play for Sturt. I've seen him (whenever he's not injured) play for Sturt Reserves on many, many occassions. Hell, did he even get a Sturt league game in SA? I don't think so. He's been picked on his surname because of his relatively famous uncle. His work ethic is also below what it should be :thumbsd:

There are a lot more lads out there that are far more talented and not to mention committed. It's a shame that those blokes have missed out when Benet 'average' Copping gets delisted then gets another chance. :thumbsd: Feel sorry for all those fellas that work their butts off day in day out and Benet just gets injured and BAM! he gets picked up.

But go on, tell me what's so great about uncommitted, injury prone, tall yet scrawny Copping? Would be great to hear your thoughts if you've seen him play and give us some reasons as to why he's a good pick up?

I also would like to know whats so good about Benet Copping. He has done sweet FA since coming over. Could barely crack at a game in the WAFL for a piss poor side.

Bennet struggled right until his WAFL team changed coach. Since then the guy has progressed in leaps and bounds and was a regular in the WAFL team. The club probably decided if he continues to improve over the next 12 months like he did in the last 6 months, he might be worth a rookie spot.

You sound a bit bitter, did he towel you up when you played against him??

Benet..... playing...?? Those 2 words don't go together mate.

Injury after injury after injury. I'm not bitter, I just don't like the arrogant kid and I think there are far more deserving guys out there.

Come on, tell me why he is a good pick up? I asked the question 3 hours ago and still no one has given me any reasons

I'm no Benet fan - wasn't from the first time I saw his pasty, skinny frame. However, as supporters of the club he plays for it is our duty to pump him up.

Fact is, you knew him 2+ years ago fryingpan, and while your opinion is probably very vaild for the guy you knew back then, he may very well have changed.

IIRC, he hasn't had much injury time-out in his time at Freo, but did struggle to break into the East Perth team. And with EP, being pretty generally crapola, this was no great advertisement for Benet as a footy player.

However, with a change of coach at EP, Benet began to get regular game time at EP, and apparently was coming along very nicely.

I would have been just as happy to see him go (and see Dean Kelly get rookied), as see him stay BUT, I am also pretty happy to trust the club to make the right decision.

He may still end up a hack, however, the club has obvioulsy seen something they like... and given they have seen him 6 out of 7 days for practically every week in the last two years, I would think they are better placed to make that judgement than you or I.

He's now a rookie. The club has put two years into his development, and if they put another two into him as a rookie, it's no more of a gamble than putting it into some unknown. He may mature in more ways than just physically. If he doesn't - well good-bye Benet.

The year he was drafted (2004) we also drafted Toby Stribling (gone), re-drafted Daniel Haines (gone), rookied Jack Juniper (gone) and Joe Krieger (gone)... so he is the only one left from that year. It's not like the club was "scared" to let him go when they packed off everyone else.

You just have to accept and trust that they may see something more than you (and we) do.

:)

Fair enough points there. Glad to see that you know your stuff :thumbsu:

I'm just wondering, if Benet struggled to even get into the East perth team, why would they bother persisting with him? 2 years and you would have thought he'd be nearing a selection for Freo but it doesn't seem like he's anywhere near. Do you honestly believe he can crack into the side in the next 2 years?

Thanks. :)

I have no idea if he can crack the senior side - My guess is not likely, but who knows. But I guess that's why he was rookied (and taken with the last rookie pick), and not re-drafted onto the main list. Rookies generally aren't expected to play seniors, but to continue developing and progressing in the local comp - and perhaps be available for an upgrade to cover injuries if their development comes on quicker than expected.

Rookies, AFAIK, are a year-by-year proposition - clubs don't have to give them two years like regular draftees, and none of us really know the exact nature of his contract, but whatever, if he doesn't do anything in the next year, I wouldn't expect him to be around next year. The ball is fully in his court now - if he can prove he's worth the life-line (as Crowley did), then good luck to him and he'll continue on. If he doesn't, then it's only a year - two max - on minimum wages on the rookie list. Seriously, the club must be better placed to make a call on him, and they are obviously happy to give him one more chance. For his sake (and Freo's, I guess), I hope he grabs it. If not - he'll be back in SA next year one would think.
