Roos play it sneakily

Thursday, July 19, 2001

THE theory goes that your best chance against the Bombers is to sneak up on the champions. Don't tell them you're coming.

If you announce you're ready for them, they bristle, stiffen the sinews and prepare to take you apart.

That's the direction the argument takes anyway.

The Kangaroos were keeping their part of the bargain at MCG training yesterday.

Hardly talking up their chances for Sunday's big match at the MCG. Keeping a low-key approach.

Unfortunately it's unlikely to make much difference.

Essendon would have identified the Kangas for special treatment. There has been a lot of heat between the clubs since the marshmallow gibes.

The Bombers will be slipping themselves for a supreme effort after their last-round doze. Sunday will be a project game.

They have won the past six contests (including last year's Ansett Cup final) after a period where the Kangas held sway.

The Kangaroos are looking for atonement. They showed it in their sharp training session yesterday.

"We haven't beaten them for a long while. It's a concern," pacy midfielder David King said.

"We just have to give a good account of ourselves. There have been big losses, something we're not proud of.

"They have been the best team in the competition for a while. We are aware how they play. They do it so well and are hard to combat.

"We have got to be on our game and play well to match them. Our midfield has been beaten soundly a couple of times, but we need to be more competitive as a total package."

King said that he and other midfielders would have to lift to cover the absence of vice-captain Anthony Stevens.

"Obviously doesn't help, but we still have a good mix of players to challenge them," he said.

"The pressure is on for the others to make up for it. He is a great role model. With Wayne (Carey), they have been our top two players for 10 years.

"But there is no point worrying about it. We've got to get on with it."

King was suspended and missed the Round 1 clash with Essendon, but kicked seven goals in his most recent game against the Bombers, in the finals last year.

"It might have been a good day for me, but we lost by 20 goals, so it wasn't something to enjoy," he said.

The Kangas will regain Glenn Archer and Adam Simpson, but defender Leigh Colbert didn't join in full training because of knee soreness. Coach Denis Pagan said Colbert will be right.
