  • Mids were beaten but we found a way to stand up
  • Colin Sylvia is about as close as he was last week (thanks to the bye)
  • Pleased to have Ibbo back and Grey is coming on
  • Hilly and Fyfe should play
So sorry folks. That's all I got as I was called away mid-interview. :(

I actually learned something there:straining:
Explained why the forward press is hard to break:)
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Have to say I loved hearing Ross expatiate on the tactic he invented in 2009, which so many teams continue to adopt. The way he explained the difficulty of breaking the forward press also vindicated my frustration with Leigh Montagna's "expert commentary" on matchday, which I found so banal and idiotic, especially his comment that spending so much time in our backline is the way Ross likes to play.

Don't blame Leigh, he was just hurt when Ross broke up with St Kilda

Very interesting interview though, especially explaining that our forwards head back into our defense to make sure that we can break out of the zone basically. I think you could sense how much he hates how his game style is stereotyped when to him it's generally a natural way to play that all clubs do. Honestly I just think he drills his teams better defensively and holds them more accountable. And Roos at Melbourne is doing the same.

The forward press is effective at stopping the 'quick' kick out of defence, as this is what the majority of kicks are, then you can see why it is effective. If you allow an opponent time and space in your defence, or they have supreme kicking abilities then the wall can be beaten.

LYON: I do believe in 2nd chances in football but in regards 2 Bootsma these incidents are not normally a one off. I feel for him and family.

LYON: We'll be very surprised if Nat Fyfe and Stephen Hill didn't play this week.

LYON: Without being dismissive Colin Sylvia is as close as he was last week. Peel didn't play on weekend but he's getting closer.

LYON: One minute we are a flood team one minute we are a press team. I'm getting confused who we are.

LYON: It's transitional people just see what they want to see. Anyone who thinks there is 3 players in a half are kidding themselves.

LYON: Re line down middle of ground - Our unique magnificent game has survived a lot. There are a lot of negative people in the industry.

Which is why we struggle against Hawthorn.

Exactly. Personally, I would instruct the players to kick the ball as far as possible to the boundary. If it gets called deliberate, then IMO that is better than having an opposition player mark it in the corridor and kick the ball back in immediately.

That, or we could spread a hell of a lot better than we did against them earlier this season.

That game was an anomaly though imo. Hawthorn were red-hot and we were poor in our disposal, run and down on key personnel. The GF was more of a case of stage-fright and inexperience in the big show.

If we play to our ability, stick to the structures and have our guns on the park we are extremely difficult to beat.

Hawthorn don't frighten me at all. No team does, if we play to our strengths.

It certainly would've been nice if we were afforded the same luxuries as Port when we played them. Not that i'm excusing our performance for a second.. But i'd love to see us play them this weekend.

Ageed. Our best is very good. If not THE best.

The Hawks game, beyond intensity missing on the day, underlined for me where I think we are vulnerable and that is from turnovers in our fowardline in general play. Time again we kicked to contests and the hawks were able spread from them and get forward cleanly and quickly while we are still trying to switch from attack to defense mode.
I think it's a product of not having a credable second target which allows the opposition to be not just plus one in defense but plus one in every contested situation in their defense. Against poorer sides, or when we're on top against better ones, it doesn't matter as our accurate quick ball movement or wins from turnovers leaves our fowards in space or one on one.
I dunno, maybe I'm wrong and that game just truamatised me...

Agreed, and that is why the form of Mayne is of concern. His chase and pressure is getting close to the level of last year, but his lead up marking and kicking is nowhere near it as yet. He will get there, no doubt, and the calls to drop him are pure insanity, but we need him as a potent attacking weapon who demands close attention again, as our gamble with Gumbleton has hit a wall, Sylvia isn't that sort of player and Clarke, although impressive of late, is not that type of hit up forward consistently enough yet.
