A lot? Go and find more than 5 people on this forum posting that they wanted him gone. Regardless of anything else.

End of the day, I don't want a coach on a 4 year contract who's heart isn't in it. And if this guy was going behind our backs with 5 weeks still to run in the season then he obviously isn't the man I was lead to believe he is.

you have just contradicted yourself, if the guy wanted to coach Saints he would but he didn't so he has left. so now you have the facts then you don't want him there as well.

survey in paper also had 45% believing we will be better off without him i.e. don't care if he went.

Move on

If you asked that question a week ago I believe the result would have been a lot different.

Fair point. But if he was committed to the club I would have loved him to be there. 2 days ago I wanted him to be there. And now my opinion has changed due to a lot of information coming out that we didn't know.

No.

After our start to the year, I can see why conversations started late.
There was another year to run on this contract.

When negotiations started, if the man had any balls, he would have said "I am unhappy about x, and x"
Not allow his management to negotiate.
Not as late as Wednesday say he is committed.
Not lie to his players all year, telling them he is committed (as Paul Roos mentioned On the Couch).

It would have been easy to say "there is another year to go, I am happy where things are.. we can talk after the season". Would have indicated something was up.

smells of Bomber Thompson, Scully, Ward etc etc in recent years, get over it and we will on this one.

Im pretty sure he would have let Nettlefold know he was not happy with Pelchens appointment and if he was not happy with the extra 2 years and $$ then his un-signing would have been another sign he was not happy with it.

A true CEO would have picked this up and consulted and managed much better.

Why hate Ross, alot of people wanted him gone anyway.

For all those that are upset he is gone I would be blaming Nettlefold for the situation. Giving him a late contract only when Melbourne were sniffing around (extra year with no increase in $$) and hiring Pelchan without his knowledge then having Ross report to him was just to peeve the guy off and seek other choices.

Its Nettlefold who has stuffed up here, no-one else, any fall-out then he needs to look at his position

Apparently Nettlefold said to the press that we were negotiating with Ross at the latest around round 18, but were told to hold off on contract talks until the season had finished.

So we follow that instruction, and what's Ross doing in that same timeframe? Finding himself another job, a job that was already filled.

I think you'll find a lot more of us would be welcoming Ross' departure if he had done the right thing and informed the club of his plans. Instead we're pretty much stuffed for a new coach, because Adelaide, Bulldogs and Melbourne are weeks ahead into finding the best candidate.

agree, probably 20% go as your game plan stinks, 45% now as your ethics stinks.

only thing wrong with this caption is that Ross actually skipped this class. Apparently having a holiday in Fremantle courtesy of Wesfarmers

again a proper CEO would have done a risk management review and realised that 3 clubs were looking for coaches, here Nettlefold had probably the 2-3rd best coach going around who was clearly upset with Pelchan, and seeking extension on his contract.

If no clubs were looking for coaches then the ball was in Nettlefolds court, so to not read the signs and work through the risks where demand outstrips supply is down right stupid.

If he really wanted him to stay he would have locked the deal away before any of the 3 would approach him, upfront of behind the scenes

"Ross had been at the club the day before and addressed the playing group and said 'see you next year' and we were absolutely confident Ross Lyon would honour his contract and be with the club for 2012. There was never any discussion to suggest that he wouldn't," Nettlefold told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

Whatta prick

Just wanted to say - it seriously upsets fans when crap like this happens. As a Cats fan - I was seriously pissed off when Bomber was found to have made contact with Essendon during the year - while we had a shot at another finals campaign. He coached badly and a year was lost.

Ablett did a similar thing.

Seems these type of people have no respect for the fans that make football and clubs what they are. Why is there so little integrity by key people in footy ?

If I were in your shoes I would be seriously pissed off too. Loyal fans deserve more from their very highly paid servants of the club.

I trust you end up getting a better coach - like we did. All the best with getting a good coach.

PS. The pain would not be quite as bad had you beaten the Pies last year - as at least Lyon then would have achieved something for the fans of the Saints.

And do what? Offer him silly money? Get rid of Pelchen because Rossy didnt like it, even though his own list management has tended to suck a bit.

Nettlefold has been on the media pumping that St Kilda is a professional club and we will deal with this professionally. Deal with the aftermath but what did you do professionally to keep him there?

Obviously with one of the best coaches going around walking away from the club then I doubt the word professional in this case.

Would it be professional to keep him at any cost?

that's silly, so how do you measure 'any cost'?,
how do you put 'any cost' on the table to negotiate?.

they know what he is on now, know what are his motivators and what he wants ( Nettlefold had far more information/facts, relationship & more importantly TIME, than Fremantle) - its called mutual negotiations.

As Lyon said today, he has been waiting for Saints to start discussions and negotiate with him, for Nettlefold not to do this over 3-4 months was very poor management especially with 3 clubs looking for coaches.

Nothing forthcoming so he went and sought other options, what's wrong with that?.

Just want to say it is a shame to see loyalty flying out the window with every year that passes in AFL.

It might turn out best for you in the long run, but that doesn't make it any easier that he has basically left you high and dry for a big fat cheque in the west. Karma has a funny way of working, most people who leave for money end up being worse off, Terry Wallace and nathan Brown two good examples from our club.

Good luck with the new appointment, at least you don't have to listen to that boring monotone voice any more crapping on about saints footy!

WARNING
Ross River Fever alert!
Ross-ti-otis-leav-e-us-for-mon-e-us (or Just 'Ross' to those outside the science community) is a Australian native that can coach for up to five years. Ross can be found stalking decent playing lists where he gorges himself until the victim is left with little or expired talent and no youth before following a money trail towards his next victim.

Symptoms you may experience include:
  • Defending small margins for entire quarters
  • A reduction in goals
  • A feeling of being surrounded or 'bubble'
  • Loss of Grand Finals
  • Frustration
  • The Drafting of Richmond players
  • Temptation to play tetris during games
  • A general lack of interest

Sorry Freo... there is no cure! :p

Who invented the term "career coach"? There are only 18 clubs hence 18 coaches hence 18 positions, pretty dicey base on which to build a "career". Say it for what it is. I need to make as much money out of this caper as quickly as I can, before I am sacked, end of story. In pursuit of that I am prepared to do anything. Just tell the truth Ross we will understand. Stop the semantics.

How dare he dump us off before we could sack him, I had a girlfriend like that once. :D

SS we have more in common than the Saints. Same thing happened to me, I was trying to be a sensitive type of guy and let her down slowly, hence enhancing my future prospects. Or so I thought! She got an inkling of it went on the front foot and I was made to look like an idiot. To the extent it was a very dry few months, I was defiantly not the flavor of the month with the girls;)

Mark Harvey is a career coach too but is now out of a job thanks to Freo and Ross Lyon.
