Ross Lyon interview

"How we play is how we play no matter who we play" with some slight tweaks. I'll give them a consistent game plan that won't change from week-to-week bar some slight adjustments"

Hallelujah

Yep absolutely. This has been missing from our game plan for all but 2 years of our existence.
As a great man said: "Footballers are not rocket surgeons"

Love how excited he looked while talking about Mitchie, Pitt, Mellington and Walters. I really rate Mellington so it was great to see him get a good mention.
Yep, I smiled when he talked about these guys with such enthusiasm. Looking forward to his influence in developing them. :)

Can't wait for next year..we've finally got a decent list and an excellent coach to take them to the next level.

If that interview doesn't ease the doubters and haters, then they need to get a clue.

Ross the Boss is a very impressive individual.

Come at us!!

It's sticking.. He shall henceforth be known as.

Don't freak out about not mentioning Mayne or Barlow. He wasn't giving a count of the players who he thinks are worth keeping, he just rattled off a few names of some players who could step up/perform different roles.

Very down to earth and realistic in his comments. No hype, so spin, no outlandishness; a straight forward, clear and intelligent assessment of a variety of different subjects. Wow! I am feeling more comfortable than I have ever felt before. For the first time ever I don't feel like I have to cross my fingers behind my back when I say I think we can have a really good season. For the first time I feel we can control our future without the need for luck.

I think lack of Barlow talk was just a lapse IMHO or, playing devils advocate, he may have deliberately avoided it. The fact is Barlow came back this year but looked fairly ordinary even if he knew how to get the ball, his last game was a shocker. Nothing unusual given where he's come from, but the jury may still be out.

It looks like we're going to see is players playing positions/roles a lot more rather than the Harvey approach which is to simply put the best players where the team needed it even if they're not particularly suited to the role. eg. McPhee as a run with, Pav in the middle, Clarke on a wing, MJ as a key defender, Mayne through the middle - late in the season Harvey did more of that perhaps due to necessity, but it certainly seemed like one of his things.

Lyon certainly gave the impression he wont be doing as much of that sort of thing.

solid gameplan week in week out
playing pav forward
having knowledge about our most recent draftees
his philosophies on football- my personal favourite is 'if you're not getting closer to a premieship, you're getting further away'

Ross the boss

Sorry to be a doubter guy's but his comments on Silvagni were a little bewildering to be honest. No way on gods earth could you compare Alex with Roberton and Suban. Silvagni's form when he came back from injury was 1st class and that form, transpired over a whole season would have been equal to McPharlin. I wonder if Lyon thinks getting knocked out twice in a game and still playing out the game is not hard enough? My question is, How Much Does He Really Know About Our Playing List?

OMG he didn't mention Barlow!!!! D-d-do ya think maybe he's g-g-gonna trade him or something :(

Seriously...he probably just forgot about him, everyone is reading wayyyy too much into that, do you honestly think Lyon doesn't rate Barlow?

So absurd that people are genuinely worried that Ross Lyon would rate Ryan Crowley over Michael Barlow.

Sorry Geoff, can't agree. Silvagni was pretty good when he came back, but he obviously thinks he can get more out of these guys.

I believe Silvagni just got better and better as the season went on, especially the last month, by that time Ross had other things on his mind.

He is soon about to find out otherwise.

I agree with Geoff on this one. I think he's underrated Silvagni but I think it's because he hasn't seen a lot of our games etc. He's probably only going by what he's seen when the Saints have played us. The sooner he gets into Freo mode the better. Get over here to Perth and settle in, and focus on his new team.

What he was saying was that these players need to step it up a notch, not that they are from a crap base.

Lets face it, they can all improve and will need too to be a top 4 side consistently.

He many well of seen elite class in SNOS but thinks he needs to work a bit to get himself there.

Although they were shitful games, he needs to sit down and watch the Hawks and Bulldogs games to get a better understanding of how good Silvagni is.

He is such a professional I am sure he will watch all of our games from this year and think what he would change to make each player better.

He said during his interview that he exploited our weaknesses in both of our games against the deaf cheats, so I am sure that is where he will start.

Hopefully he can sell his vision to the players quickly and make them the best players they can be.

Couldn't say it better myself!:thumbsu:

I doubt Lyon saw much of Silvani particularly at the business end of the season when Silvani was at his best.

However I dont mind Lyon wanting to get more out of Silvani, like 22 weeks of league best KP defense and AA selection, I look forward to Lyon getting more out of Silvani :D:D:D!!!!!!

He'll have a fair idea by rd1 2012 i reckon:thumbsu:

Fantastic stuff. How goddamm wonderful to have someone so intelligent, articulate & hard working in charge. I'm sold. Great things ahead people!

It will be interesting to see if Lyon opts for his usual trading for players over drafting kids. If Lyon takes the trading in players approach , I will be getting seriously worried. I guess we will find out in the coming weeks.
