Ross Lyon interview

Strange about the absence of Barlow, given that he passed on him for Gehrig. Then again, he can't mention everyone.

I'd say Barlow sits below the elite bracket he mentioned, but isn't in the category where we need more improvement.

Lyon has always rated ruckman. His first order of business at St Kilda was getting in Gardiner, then King. A lot of the reason why St Kilda performed poorly in the replay grand final last year was the absence of Gardiner.

Very good interview right there and Steve Butler should be congratulated. This is what most of us would have expected from his first press conference last friday not the crap that was thrown up.

As others have mentioned, I hope he does still rate Mayne and Barlow especially and they were just over looked.

I see the club is still pretty keen on Clark.

I finally have full faith in the direction the club is going and loved how he didn't pull any punches on his thoughts on the current list.

Sounds like he has had some tough times.
Let's hope he is feeling much better in sunny perth, and turns the two failed premierships with the saints into two flags for us!
He is definitely gunna shake things up a bit at freo.
Just cannot wait to see the mighty pav in the forward line where he belongs kickin goals..................bringit

Too true, the media were too keen to make a fuss of the circumstances of his exit. It sells papers.

You guys have a great coach now, that's what matters. All the best for next year.

I think EVERY Freo fan is looking forward to this

I really like his comments about our game plan. They have been able to shred us, who better to fix our holes than someone who has exploited them to great effect.

I also like his comment about building afl body's and toughness, if we are to transition from boys to men fighting for top 4, this will be critical.

He also had the balls to drop Dal Santo when required, so I hope he keeps our players on their toes.

Once the dust settles, this could really be a turning point for Freo.

High hopes that Ross will get the best out of Walters now, would expect Walter and Crowley to get a one year extension and clear instructions on what they need to achieve.

Think he will be very pleasantly surprised when 'gets to know' Broughton, not sure how he missed Barlow unless Barlow was missing against the Saints this year and of course young Zac.

Silvagni I reckon did go to the next level in the last few games but he probably didn't see them.

Would assume that sometime over the next few months before pre-season he will sit down and go through various of our games that he has not seen with assistants to get a better handle on some of these guys and what they bring to the table.

Good interview very realistic assessment.

From the article in the West online:

SB: Do you see Matthew Pavlich as more a midfielder or a forward?
RL: I think he's under-rated in the east, he's really led a club off its knees as its marquee player. You get the sense of his great pride in Fremantle and he's refuted overtures. He's really dangerous forward so if we can get enough support around him, I'd rather use him more forward and flick him through the midfield than the other way.

Thank you!

Mayne as trade bait?

Hard to see how Lyon misses talking about Mayne when he played every game this year. Also seeing as he has already spoken to Bond and Brad Lloyd about who's going/coming/targeting and trade week.

Music to my ears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i liked his assesment of the List- think he's got it pretty spot on really.

The thing that intrigued me is where he said that compared to last year he felt that our Press was a bit off the pace (maybe the impact of Chris Scott on the game plan)

Cant use injuries as an excuse, but if a lot of us were playing very injured, then it would have to effect the press.

I honestly think Mayne was one of the few who played to his highest possible abilities this year.

He named the best, then those with huge scopes for improvement. I wouldn't read too much into the names he omitted.

A bit of overeaction on here to Mayne and Barlow not being mentioned. Just because he didnt mention their names in a broad ranging interview doesnt mean he thinks any less of them.
I think Mayne will be one to really benefit from Ross's arrival, workrate is one of his non negotiable's and the forward pressure Mayne brings when not having to play the key forward will fit very nicely in Ross's gameplan. Chopper has some defencies but you cant expect him to hold down a key post and still play his defensive pressure style of game.

Barlow I think has slipped under everyone's radar just the way any coach would like it. Why talk him up when you dont have to.

Yeah, I agree with this.

The guy has been on the job for a few days and said what he said. I don't think Mayne's role is a concern and if you listen to what Ross says, its about sustained effort and being 'abnormal'. :thumbsu:

Guys like Barlow, Lower and DeBoer are tailor made for Lyons system.

Also, I'm sure (just my opinion) he's mentioned at least one person who will be traded so I wouldn't read too much into this first interview.

Love how excited he looked while talking about Mitchie, Pitt, Mellington and Walters. I really rate Mellington so it was great to see him get a good mention.

Great interview, intelligent and no beating around the bush. Fantastic to hear him demanding that both young and senior players step up. Also good that he recognizes that we have some really young players that could become good AFL players. Hopefully they will continue to get an opportunity.

The best thing about having Ross is that he knows exactly what a team needs to be to become a top 4 team. And let's not kid ourselves, we are not there yet. Were still one A grade midfielder away from being a serious threat and Ross will encourage our players to work hard and get there.

I reckon Matt De Boer is going to become one of Lyon's favourite players are Freo.

Loved that bit as well, hopefully we get to see both Walters and Mellington in the 22 next year as our Milne/Schneider combo with Ballas bursting through the midfield.
