Duffield is big on the issue of our foot skills being so poor, but as he also pointed out today in his bi-weekly podcast, if we could have improved our foot skills enough to be a one goal a game better team - we'd currently be in the Top 8.

Gee there's a lot of folk in denial here. Maybe it's just part of the grieving process...

We haven't got any appointments yet, so I am not taking it on good faith that we are going to get a better Coach and CEO and be gooder "just because". We're making our way through a rebuild and we might be going down a snake instead of up a ladder.

e.g. Have your 3 main KPF's in the team instead of out injured?

Matera has kicked six goals without them in the side and twenty four when they are.

We could have two goals a game right there before the key forwards scoring is factored in

I think our foot skills can be partly attributed to the fact that our best 22 has 9 players picked after #50.
Switta, Walters (the rare exception), Langdon (if he could kick he would be a top ten pick), Hughes, Duman, Crowden, Nyhuis, Banfield and Jones

Only 2 of those players are in our best 22. And our foot skills were just as bad when none of those 7 were playing which has been the case in most games over the last 4 years.

It's our game plan that leads to poor foot skills. Specifically, it's the part of our game plan that sees us crowding the contest rather than spreading, which leads to a chain of 1m handballs when we gain possession, and all our kicks being under more pressure than other teams. It's why previously elite kicks like Brad Hill and Nathan Wilson kick like amateur ressies players when playing for Fremantle.

I agree with you. I think we can rely on less players at the contest with more elite talent in the side winning it

100%.

Reading between the lines it was pretty easy to see Fyfe is unhappy at what happened.

I'm not sure why he wasn't consulted. They consulted Pavlich before they sacked Harvey.

No they didn’t.

He was having lunch with Michael Thompson and received a phone call telling him to get to the club immediately.

That is from his book.

He was informed of what was to be announced at the press conference.

Being advised of what is about to be announced is not being consulted on the decision.

The only players that seem to be happy about Ross leaving are the slackers i.e. Kersten . The ones that give great effort are not so pleased. TBH he is more popular with the players than i was led to believe by the Hardies and Hagdorns of this world.

Talking about popular with your peers, Hardie & Crumpets are definitely not.

Interesting that they talk about popularity, some may say they have small digit syndrome.

Incorrect. Apparently the way to improve by a goal a game is not by kicking goals, but by restricting your opponents’ ability to kick goals. Skills therefore are irrelevant.

I learned this on the Freo board of bigfooty.

We move the ball to slowly to take advantage of having KPFs. The forward line looks like the Gaza Strip a lot of the time.

Nah, as you know more than anyone because you keep on telling us it's a good thing, nowadays you get drafted because you out-beep test the other bloke. Clem Smith was one of the best kicks going around and couldn't even make it at Carlton. There is a mass of talented kicks out there that don't even get invited to a combine because they don't do repeat sprints with two and a half twists fast or high enough.

Fitness is a measure of mental toughness and hard work. Nobody ever got out of bed in the morning an athlete after going to bed a couch warmer.

The fitness just isn't a negotiable for AFL and the guys who have worked hard with the talent go top ten

Garbage. Tom Sheridan is half the footballer Clem Smith is, we picked Tommy at pick 16 because he can athlete even though he can't football.

Footballers are either athletic of have another job.

The shed is full of guys who could have been something if only they tried harder.

The footballer v athlete is a get out of gaol for guys who have the tools except the mental toughness to push themselves to get fit.

They aren't footballers though, that's the point. Not in the sense that we have always understood the term. The game is poorer for it. Langdon, Sheridan - these types should be no where near the elite competition.

Agree. The game demands runners these days. So the highly skilled less athletic bloke gets overlooked for the average skilled athlete.

A footballer needs to be able to kick _and_ run. Clem Smith was a flawed pro footballer because he wasn’t fit enough. And Brady Gray was a flawed pro footballer because couldn’t kick well enough.

You only have to look at Matera to see the importance of both fitness and work ethic. In 2018 he looked like a dud trade. Over the summer he worked harder than he ever had. Really improved his running capacity. And 2019 is a career best year.

What this guy said ^^^

What seperates the good players from the average is hard work. Michael Walters couldn't get a game because he was unfit in the early days. Got a clip under the ear, went and got fit, and hey presto he's a match winner. Wouldn't be a match winner if he still being a sloth.

100% - it's not that hard to understand.
