Ross isn't the problem. He devised his defensive gameplan to counter geelong's corridor-heavy game plan, and it changed the game. He started freo on a slingshot / fast moving transition game before the rest of the comp... but everyone else has caught up.

He is transitioning our game plan once again, the team just hasn't fully adjusted yet.

The reduction of interchanges has really opened the game up too - there's a definite adjustment that's taken place in the nature of the game... different teams have adjusted better than others; currently we're not one of them., and the age of our list has a little bit to do with that; it's not an accident that our younger players showed greater energy in the final quarter.

Ross hasn't done anything revolutionary except that he is exceptional at making average players play a role and win games.

Have a look what Clarkson has done that has changed the game. Sure he has quality players but no one should doubt his tactical brilliance. At one stage I thought Ross was better but Clarkson has changed his game plan many times and only people are catching on now.

I agree Clarkson is a better coach but I think you're mistaken about the extent of Ross' influence on the game. Clarkson is the only coach wo I rate higher than Ross, and even then, it's a pretty close thing.

Perhaps a bit harsh on Ross

I just think he is in the wrong sport if he continues with same game plan. If he was coaching soccer he would have won trophies by now

Yet they've had less preseasons, so it does not add up.

The pre-seasons are when you build your strength and endurance base, and it's here that most youngsters fall down. But once you reach AFL standard fitness and strength, then youth has a definite edge... once you're in your late 20's your physical performance slowly starts to decline. Guys like Pav are the exception, not the rule.

I'm splitting hairs when comparing ross and clarkson. But ross himself says that outcomes are your measure of performance... and on that front, clarkson has an edge.

Clarkson also has a two year head start on ross as a head coach, and has had the luxury of longevity of tenure at one club. If Ross had started at Freo in 2005 and stayed at one club as Clarkson has, then I think Ross would probably be ahead of even clarkson.

Soccer structures up defensively because one mistake costs you the match if you can't defend it, we made lots of mistakes tonight and had goals scored on us because we couldn't defend the turnovers.
In soccer they use to have sweeper that can hit long and short passes 2013 Johnson . then they decided to change to defensive midfield without skill makelele 2015 ibo . later we got defensive mid with skill alonso. But freo got nobody 2016

We should've tried harder to poach Hardwick. Or Buckley. Or Brad Scott. Wait, Neeld's available, too. We should've gone for him. Or Malthouse, who was desperate enough to present himself as the suspended Essendon players' trainer-coach.

Holy ******* crap.

Chris Scott was the one that got away. Devotee of the Neesham model, loved the club, loved by the players.

Hard to argue Ross hasn't got 100% out of the squad in the H&A, finals who knows. It would make for an interesting bit of alternative history.

We were very good the year Scott was our assistant.

Absolutely considering the age and development of the squad. Harvey was a great motivator but Chris was the brains of the coaching staff.

Obviously inherited a great team at Geelong but he's held them together longer than they might have under Bomber. Developed some quality players. Thinks outside the box. Good coach.
