Analysis Ross Lyon

Don't care. De Boer is not good enough for a premiership team. Mzungu, Danyle Pearce very marginal
I don't think De boer should be in the team either, but lets be fair, every premiership team has its fair share of foot soldiers, even the hawks.

D Pearce is a liability against the top teams. Against lesser teams he goes ok. He was pathetic today.

He misses the leading target so often. Suban is in the same category, though he goes a touch better than Pearce against the good sides and isn't as good against the rest.

I'm certain that Lyon can see the skills issues. He mentions it most weeks in the post game presser. Did again today. I just don't know how he is expecting improvement from suban/deboer/Pearce in this area.

Having said all that. I'm a huge Lyon fan. He has been the best thing that's hapoened to this club. I just wish I could understand his thinking on the above players.... Baffling!

Some strange posts in this thread. Anyone that doesn't think Lyon has changed the game plan or hasn't tried different things hasn't been watching closely enough. My criticism is he is selecting the same old players to enact the new game plan which is definitely more offence oriented. But in his defense, we are talking about first year kids, you can understand his reluctance.

The #1 problem at the club is not the coach it is the trading strategy, or absolute lack thereof, that has not brought the required mix of skills into the club to top off the list and turn a very good side into a premiership one. End of story. Yet every year like a broken record we have a post season on our board where people are cheering on Bond for refusing to trade for what we need.

In retrospect, our best chance of a flag was not 2013 it was 2012. Unluckily for us Lyon didn't come out of contract in 2010 and we got him a year too late. If he had had 2011 to mould the team and teach the players what he wanted we would have gone top 4 2012 and had the team to win. Look at Pav 2015 compared to Pav 2012.

Yeah... But in modern footy those foot soilders still need good skills. The Hawks foot soilders are still good by hand and foot. When they get the ball and dispose possession is still maintained.

When Deboer got that mark I groaned and said 'he won't make the distance' an eagle fan said 'come on mate it's only 35 out' ..... That isn't good enough, even for a foot soolder. Yes everyone has the occasional stinker kick but how many on here knew he wasn't making the distance on that kick? I would bet most.

Yet Barlow got subbed. Which means he was worse than De Boer.

Eyeballed the latter as he drove down Coghlan street in his Jeep after the game. He didn't look comfortable.

Meh, spin it how you want but no sane person would rate De boer over Barlow. Ross subbed him, presumably, to make a statement out of a senior player. Nobody would care if MDB was subbed out, nobody's thinking, "oh shit, well if De boer is getting subbed out then anyone could be next!"

14 years ago I imagined that if Freo was top of the ladder I would have been rapt. The reality is that most of this season it has felt hollow for me. Yep, top of the ladder. Playing good footy? Nope. Best team in the comp? Clearly not.

The fact there is so much agitation on this board would suggest I'm not alone in my lack of satisfaction. We need to be better, maintaining the status quo is not working. Lyon needs credit for our consistency in the last few years, but questions need to be asked about the lack of genuine improvement as well.

Its always better to be young than to be good, just look at Melbourne. Always playing the young-uns and keeping the supporters happy. Whenever they lose they can always trot out the "don't worry guys we'll be better than them in 5 years" line.

We have one obvious vulnerability against top teams - its called the first quarter. Strangely its also a quarter where we have blown some teams away. However if we go 5 goals down our game style can't seem to peg it back by the end of the game.

If we play finals east or against WC the umpires WILL give a significant number of soft frees to our opponents early on in the game. The only answer to this is to be ultra disciplined particularly in the first quarter. No high tackles, late challenges, dragging the ball in, in the back free kicks otherwise the maggots will be all over us.

If Hawthorn gets away in the first you can kiss the game goodbye.

You're totally right, and I'm glad you've mentioned this. We should all join together and picket the Freo offices and let them know that we expect more than this mediocrity. We demand success. We expect the team to win every week and kick at least 100 points. If they can't meet our demands on how they perform - I fully support you and SA in having Ross removed, Pavlich lynched, and Fyfe traded so that we can bring in a better gameplan and players. And we need to play the kids now.

How many players have we brought in during the last 4year's that have had poor skills.

This has been a concerted focus during the last few years but a team is not built in 4 years, and 8 years ago we just needed depth.

How many people groaned when he got the ball? I wonder if anyone in the coaches box did.

His kicking is not AFL standard, it's that simple. He should not be playing AFL anymore, not if we're serious.

I know Jetta is inconsistent as well but he would still be a big upgrade on him, if we can still keep our 1st round I really want us to get him.

Best coach the clubs ever had. One of the best going around.

Doing a good job with a forward line consisting of a senior citizen playing injured, a genuinely talented small forward, a resting ruckman, a first year KPP and a defensive minded mid sized forward.

Still a good chance this year. Would be a better chance with a decent forward line we've been trying to sort out since before landing Tarrant. Not really Lyons fault.

That's not what I said. But you're 100% right on one thing - I badly want success for this club and our our supporters. We are going to find out very soon if it comes our way.

The biggest problem is that Clarkson has Ross' gameplan so comfortably worked out, especially at the MCG.

I love Lyon but he really doesn't seem to have improved or adapted anything since the GF loss two years ago and if we meet the Hawks again on grand final day it will be either a respectable loss if we are lucky and an all time annihilation if the Hawks are on

I'm happy with Ross Lyon...Finals in 2012, GF in 2013, Finals in 2014 (though we were cruelled by injury to key players), 2015 at RD21 top of the ladder clear by a game and a half, with the ability to manage players for rest of season (would have been happy at RD1 if I knew that was how the season would pan out)...The club has never looked better since I started supporting in 2003...I hope he stays on and wins us at least two premierships to take that monkey of his and our backs!!!

Hawks smashed swans at GF last year...2013 was a lot closer and if the conditions were better we should have beaten them...We can beat Hawks on our day and if the hawks have a harder run into finals, their ageing team may well run out of puff!

I was being playful - we all want success, but there's no recipe to achieve it. As clogged has mentioned in the past, we don't have the cattle to get it done, and getting the cattle isn't easy in itself. The draft and trading are still crystal balling exercises, and then you throw years of development over the top of it - and see whether a kid has what it takes. I think sometimes we demand too much of the club. They make the most of what they've got, and we get frustrated because we all expect one single thing that is quite hard to achieve

Even if he wins us a grand final there will be people complaining that we didn't win by enough. After years of enduring crap festering in the bottom half its nice to at least have a chance.
No, I think people will be pretty happy if we win a premiership.
