big Cain running around Carlton's ressies team on a big fat contract for two years. Beautiful.
Carlton will boost its ruck stocks next season by signing out-of-contract St Kilda big man Cain Ackland. The Blues will use their No. 1 pick in the pre-season draft to secure the 24-year-old after offering him a lucrative three-year deal.

While the Saints are yet to announce their delistings, Ackland was part of new coach Ross Lyon's future plans, despite the arrival of former Eagles ruckman Michael Gardiner during trade week.

The Saints offered the 196cm Ackland an improved two-year deal in a bid to retain him, but he rejected the offer earlier this week.

Saints chief executive Archie Fraser said he was surprised by Ackland's decision. "We were never going to delist Cain," Fraser said. "When Ross arrived he was keen to keep him. He was keen to make him a part of his structure. "It all happened in the last three days. The Blues obviously needed a ruckman and Cain decided that his future was at Carlton, not with St Kilda."

We were just lucky he wanted (and somehow got) three!

But it had an escape clause that they were smart enough to use. Which is why he got hardly any senior games in his second year.

For all the flak Ross copped early on, he has completely turned the club around on field. He would now be in the top echelon of coaches in the AFL and has shown everyone why the club selected him in front of many other favoured candidates. This superstar of a man has us playing the best footy in the comp at the minute, a combination of fortress like defence and an unparalleled will to use the corridor and attack the forward fifty with pure ferocity. We all wondered in the beginning whether he was the right man for the job as we were playing fairly ugly Sydney-like footy, now I think, and hope, that everyone is in unity in believing he is the man.

Well done Ross Lyon and well done Saints.:thumbsu:

Agreed. Win against Port Adelaide was sensational.

Breaking that 12-year hoodoo means good things to me. If we can emulate and then improve on what we did in '97, i'll be a very happy Sainter.

Just to get a little technical here...........a couple of weeks ago on FC Grant Thomas was asked why he initially thought that Ross Lyon would not make a good coach.

His answer was fairly interesting and if you read between the lines possibly a reflection on how flawed GTs thinking is and why personality testing is full of dangers for footy clubs.

He said that he had played with Ross at Fitzroy (true), he knew him fairly well and that his personality type was not of a leader (e.g shy, reserved, etc).

However, what Grant failed to acknowledge (or understand) is that there are dynamic leaders (Nathan Buckley/Michael Voss), workman like leaders (Robert Harvey), technical leaders (Chris Judd) and reserved leaders (Glenn Archer).

Leadership is displayed in many ways and not just the narrow way GT was looking for, e.g walk tall, talk tough, look your players in the eye, etc. (this personality testing was the product of Butters/Thomas regime).

Ross is definitely a reserved type but his personality is one where when faced with a challenge he steps up a couple of cogs but externally he still is reserved. Just to make a point, Ross is the same personality type as the legendary Rugby League coach Wayne Bennett. The reserved types also work well with the younger "Gen Y" players!

Supporters need to be confident that whilst he may not be the messiah..........he is a very competent boy!!:)

I like that post man, very true.

Ross is the kinda guy that wouldn't gloat if he was holding up the premiership cup.

I'd love nothing more than see him holding the cup then start saying 'we're not getting ahead of ourselves, it's a long season and we're only in round...wait a minute...**** YEAHHHHHHHHHH SHIIIIIIIT KENTS SSSSSS MADDEST SHITTT I LOVE YOU ALLLLLLS'

Brings a tear to me eye just thinking about it.

Yeah interesting comment.
Having studied leadership on a few occasions, I think it is safe to say that there are more successful leaders of GT's personality around. But that is probably because those who blow their own trumpet a bit are more likely to get into a leadership role, therefore there are more leaders of that type in the first place. Just because the more reserved leader is in the minority does not mean they are inferior, in fact they may be better, due to being in that position based upon merit, despite tending to fly under the radar.

By the way I didn't read anything derogatory into GT's comments about Ross Lyon.

Nobody doubted Lyon's technical abilities as a coach and this year he's showing why. Our setup and match planning has been first rate. Lyon sees football as a contest of two groups of players and not a field of one on one matchups.

The big doubt on Lyon was his ability to get the best out of individual players. It's probably somewhat of a contradiction in personality types to get a coach that does both well and for Lyon probably a contradiction in what he preaches. For him, the motivation to be part of a successful group is all the motivation you need on an individual basis.

Sure assistants and others can and do perform one on one roles but the big difference this year I reckon is that the penny has dropped with the players in regards to what Lyon is preaching.

The other aspect of Lyon I'm sure the players now understand and fully appreciate is he's very consistent and very much a players coach. Lyon clearly hates doing media and probably hates seeing or hearing himself in the press. His ego doesn't extend beyond wanting to be respected for anything other than being a good coach. I'm sure the players respect him for that more than you see at most other teams around the league.

The only box Lyon now needs to tick is that of consistency. Tactically we've seen it for 2 and a bit years, now we just need to see if his approach allows players to stick to the script over an entire season.

Leigh Tudor has made a huge difference this year...

I was going to ask what you guys thought about that. With his intimate knowledge of the Geelong game plan and philosophy, it seems to be no coincidence.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not getting on here trying to attribute all the success to Leigh Tudor the Geelong guy. You guys have had the skilled and talented players for years, and with recent strategic mature-age recruits to fill the gaps, it seems like it's all coming together. Congratulations on the good strong form so far shown.

Didn't Tudor coach Geelong at VFL level.
Would he have had much access to the AFL team?

Yes he did.

And yes he did. He was involved in all sorts of stuff down there. Also, you'd often see him in the AFL coaches box on days that the VFL wasn't playing simultaneously.

Refer in particular to: "The Geelong VFL team is an integral part of the Geelong Cats" (Neil Balme).

I think you got a good pickup there.

I remember that. Think Rix got an extra year because Ackland left. I think Ross likes having about five ruckmen on his list.

That's true, I think he was fairly honest and straight up about his assessment of Ross. I am glad to say that last night on FC he was very complimentary about Ross and the Saints. Love all round!:)

A few weeks ago on SEN they were talking about how the players were finally getting Rossy's game plan in his third year as coach. GT was asked how long it takes for players to buy into a game plan and he said "about six weeks". I pissed myself. I think GT forgets himself sometimes and "accidentally" has a swipe at Ross.

So, anyway Roy, you seem to have a strong interest in Ross. What's the story?

No doubt he appreciated Rossy's hard approach as a player at the Lions.

Without compromising myself too much.............I am defending Ross' character as a person, having been witness to his personality, background, upbringing, behaviour, etc. over many years.

Also being in the Human Assessment/Resources field for many years, I believe I am able to make a competent judgment. If he was a dud I wouldn't defend him on BF.

I just want St Kilda supporters to have confidence in the man who is coaching their team. Yes, I am an old Fitzroy Boy and take a strong interest in the saints, how can you not see the toughness in them so far this year.:)

I was not sure where to post my thoughts, but this looked like a great thread.

The football being played by the current St Kilda team is great to watch. To be honest, I thought your defense would stuggle at the start of the year. I should have known that with Ross Lyon (Sydney days) and SOS in charge, I was always going to be mistaken.

Really looking forward to round 14, with a touch of round 12.

I don't know why you would have thought our defence would struggle. Last year and during the pre-season our defence has been solid.
The core of Sam Fisher , Hudgeton , Blake, Gram, Gilbert was there and we have more depth than last year, or are you talking about defensive pressure?

I thought without Hudgeton and Maguire in your backline it would stuggle. While I thought Gilbert would improve, he has really taken his game to another level (More than I expected). Dawson has also held his own perfectly and the pressure up the ground has also been amazing.

There was no doubt for Hudgeton at the start of the year and he is probably about ready to come back after his injury.
Maguire has not been a regular team player since 2006, so i'm not sure why you thought that this would drastically manifest itself in 2009.

Hudgeton has not played one game this year, so yes he was in doubt at the start of the year. I thought the Saints would struggle to deal with his loss a little more than they have.

Personally, I think the defensive efforts of the Saints have exceeded many peoples predictions, even some Saints supporters.

Yeah, but it is the defensive work in the midfield and the forward line that is surprising. If anything the backline is doing less work stopping forward intrusions and they are able to play more into the midfield.

nathan caroll
i didnt really want him
was happier to give zac dawson another go on the rookie list
hes impressed me
