So considering he had them in their peak years so to speak and all they have to show is a couple of runners up medals? He's lost pieces while at the club and apart from Mcevoy and a few others that list has gone backwards quickly.

Agreed he's not known for development but that's a good thing because we have Simon Lloyd and our recruiting department is heaps better than the Saints is/was.

I'm sure Bond knows this and it means Lyon doesn't have to worry about it.

Cannot really understand the Lyon love. In reality St Kilda has underperformed under him and achieved **** all, unless you count the off field notoriety.

Will be a great day when Rosich gets the arse and Harris falls on his sword.

If we are going to have a change in coach, what happened to a ****ing selection process?

Reg - this is the single craziest thing you (anyone?) has ever said on Bigfooty!

Lyon has taken a spud list with cream at the top to 2 Grand Finals (like Malthouse did at Collingwood in 2002 & 2003 - his best achievements as a coach). What I like most is that Lyon's looked at Melbourne and decided we're a better chance. Bring on 'Freo Footy':)

Amazing effort by the club to do this without it leaking (BTW, that was the selection process). Sorry for Harves but, notwithstanding the injuries, no-one in the football community can forgive where we finished in 2011 with the quality he had to work with.

How can it be the sign of a well run club to not go through a proper selection process?

Its ruthless, sure, and clinically decisive, but then so would trading out Pav or Sandilands for advantage and loyalty be ****ed. Would that be the sign of a well run club to you?

Selection process?

Would you bother interviewing Roos or Lethal or Malthouse if they wanted to coach us?

:thumbsu: I agree completely.

Selection process is for clubs that don't know what they want, Fremantle it seems wanted Lyon and went after him in the same way Collingwood wanted Malthouse at the end of 1999, I don't remember interview processes in that decision there.

The proof is in the pudding though. Lyon has shown he can coach, if he interviewed well then he's miles ahead of Harvey and it's a no brainer.

If the right deal was on the table then again, it's an easy decision to make. The Hawks squeezed some big name players out then went okay.

FMD!! Freo iam impressed, great get for you guys, exciting times ahead for ya.

wait wait wait so you ****ed off a coach whos team had potential and couldnt quite get there for a coach whos team had potential and couldnt quite get there.

Differing level of "not quite getting there" though between what Lyon did with St Kilda as opposed to what has happened at Fremantle.

OK, be a smart arse.

Did they win any? No, they didn't.

He recruited Peake for ****'s sake, couldn't hang on to a true champion in Luke Ball and puts up with the lack of leadership shown by Reiwoldt.

I suppose when we make the 8 next year you'll be ecstatic, even though it would have happened under Harvey anyway.

In another year Harvey could have proved his worth, or otherwise, and Malthouse would have been available for 2013. Now we're going to be locked into a quickie knee-jerk deal.

Yet they still got in a grand final

Roos-Not leaving Sydney (Family Reasons), Lethal-To old and not up with the modern game. Malthouse was the only option and EVERY team is looking for him.

This was a TOTALLY unexpected move and trumped Melbourne and other teams looking at him. A brilliant move by Freo.

P.S. Peake will be getting more than a couple of Brownlow votes in the latter part of the season. He had an inspired second half of the season. Fingers crossed he can get players like Johnson and Ibbotson to deliver half of the performances that their talent should show.

Lyon had the uncanny ability to get the best out of his footballers bar this year i.e the below average players that made up his team, which is most apart from Riewoldt, Montagna, Dal Santo, Goddard, Ball, Milne and Hayes. Fremantle got one hell of a catch here hopefully he gets the most out of that team which is full of possible stars and ready made stars.

get rid of starts like Johnson and Duffield for a start ;).

:thumbsu:

Must say though it's not bad to screw up by getting rid of Luke Ball and then still making the Grand Final..

Considering we traded away the chance of the number 1 pick in the Hodge, Ball, Judd draft to get Trent Croad...

I dont think this is the right approach...
Lyons game plan does not win flags, Sydney won one like this and by less than a goal and lost one, Saints lost two like this. Every other flag this century has been won by attacking midfield/ forward line sides Geel, Coll, WC, Bris, Ess, Hawks all played attacking football. None of the attacking players (Hill, Morabito, Fyfe) that we have drafted over the last five yrs will be able to play to their strengths. And the Dockers will constantly turn the ball over chipping it around in the backline.

Secondly Lyon pretty much exclusivley does not draft and develop young players so if we dont win a flag in the next two seasons then we wont be able to build a team to compete again til next decade.

Thirdly I dont want to know how much we are paying him.

Valid point. Good luck for 2012 boys.

This has got to be some of the biggest crap I have read on here for a while

At least we know Pav wont be played in the midfield much next season, he'll get moved straight to the backline.

That makes more sense than having him onball while Johnson stands at halfback picking his nose and Rhys at half forward looking for his girlfriend in the crowd.

Freo just became a serious footy club.
First real coach you have had in my opinion.
He obviously preferred your list to the Saints and Melbournes.
Contenders next year, DAMN.

You obviously didn't watch him crumble in the big games. He had a temporary increase in output as anybody would with a change in clubs, then reverted to the Peake we all know.

Close enough is still good enough for you is it dom?
Haha so if scarlett misses the toepoke and dawson takes it up the other end and they goal, or if milney gets possession of the lenny hayes kick and goals then all of a sudden ross lyon is a master coach? Open your eyes and realise that there is luck involved in winning a premiership, and when it came down to the knife's edge, the saints didnt have luck on their side. Those grand finals could have gone either way, but you can't discredit Ross Lyon for going so close to winning 1 or 2 flags. Why dont you just forget all the hard work he did during the home and away seaon. Who knows, if Ross Lyon wasnt the coach against the pies, the margin could have been 100 points
