Re: 2012 Media Thread

Who gives a @^#&

Sick of hearing about Ross Lyon. Fact is he is now a Fremantle coach. He is one of the best coaches in the AFL, and is one of greatest coaches to coach the RW&B.

Fact is NOONE except Ross Lyon & couple people at Fremantle knows how it went down, and we will never find out. He has made that clear.

Time everyone moved on.....

Whilst I don't really have much interest in Fremantle's coach, discussing the transition from previous game strategies and the approach to the list (and younger players) directly relates to Lyon - so to me it remains a very valid discussion point at this point of the season.

Re: 2012 Media Thread

He missed his chances? HIM? Don't make me laugh. Players are paid the big bucks to make sure we don't miss the easy shots on goal that the coach's game plan put us in a position to kick. They didn't. We lost. End of story. Move on.
I make a statement about him "missing his chances" - which simply means he was meant to get a Premiership, got us to 2 GFs, and then we didn't get the Premierships. He had a part to play, surely.

At any rate, then you tell me to move one. Alright. How about YOU move on by not being precious about ANY hint that Lyon isn't perfect, that he has any responsibility for his leaving, and that St Kilda aren't the devils who screwed up entirely.

How about you don't write a 600 word diatribe about how Ross is just awesome and clean as the driven snow? If we're all about moving on?

Seems the only person perpetuating this discussion with petty diatribe, and keeping it going, is YOU, big boy.

If thats what it was about then fair enough, but just seems to be about hatred towards Ross Lyon, how he "screwed" the club over, how "bad" a coach he is. etc etc...

Re: 2012 Media Thread

PS, I think you misunderstand. My last post was not a "diatribe".

It was a post addressed to SainterK, who had some questions about Ross she wanted someone to answer for her.

I think you know when I said "move on" in my previous post to you, I did not mean that no-one henceforward should ever talk about Ross Lyon, which would be absurd.

I appreciated the spirit of SainterK's questions.

She struck me as being genuinely troubled or puzzled, rather than carping.

SainterK wanted someone to "shed some light" on the specific matters she raised.

I hope I have done so.

If I have not, I hope someone else can.

Either way, that is for her to decide. And you always have the option to ignore my posts, which I'm sure from now on you shall.

Re: 2012 Media Thread

OK, since you ask SainterK, I'll try - again.

1. Ross didn't "go behind his manager's back". The manager is not some sort of victim as has been portrayed - except perhaps a victim of his own greed. As soon as contract talks with Freo began, Ross and his manager (Craig Kelly of ESP) - who also manages Mark Harvey - mutually agreed to terminate their relationship as a conflict of interest had arisen. Ross then hired another agent (his lawyer) who could guarantee confidentiality for Ross in his negotiations with Freo. Ross put all this on public record in his 1st presser with Freo.

Agents owe duties of confidentiality and undivided loyalty to their clients. In the situation that had arisen, ESP could not keep Lyon's confidences without betraying Harvey's faith. In that situation, ESP were OBLIGED to cease acting for Ross and Ross was right to ask them to do so.
timeline of this situation seems muddled- to all and sundry ESP and Lyon Both stated that it was agreed AFTER the fact that they part ways-
NOT before the Thursday evening when the news broke.

you are intimating that ESP was aware Prior to that time of the second offer to Lyon?
when Both Kelly and Lyon said it occured post the annuncement.

Woops! You're right about the timeline. I should have stated the point as follows:

After Ross struck the deal with Freo, Ross and ESP mutually agreed to terminate their relationship. Privately with Ross, ESP agreed that for Ross to have involved ESP in talks with Freo would have been inappropriate as there was a clear conflict of interest.

ESP nevertheless chose, when speaking to the media in Melbourne, to portray Ross as the villain - as someone they had to "sack" for speaking to the Dockers without their knowledge - as if Ross had done something sneaky or unlawful or inappropriate or underhand, when the opposite was in fact the case.

If there were any villains in the piece so far as management were concerned, it was ESP, for acting as if they had an unconditional right to represent Ross in all contract talks, which they did not.

choosing raph clarke would have mainly been his choice; dropping max hudghton, his choice; not respecting luke ball, who ended up leaving as a result, and becoming a key in collingwood's premiership the next year, again, was his choice

to say that he has no responsibility for st. kilda not winning a premiership is laughable

Re: 2012 Media Thread

Just saw the interview and to me it looked like if he answered the questions truthfully it would've done more harm than good so he said things like "I don't think I need to answer that" etc, but IMO he did what was best for him and his family. Freo offered him more money for more years and he almost had to take it. I appreciate what he did for us and probably the AFL in general (he changed the game with the forward press), but its time to move on and I'm looking forward to the next era and a more balanced gameplan.

Agree. I have no problem with him leaving for another opportunity. Most coaches have to wait around until they're relieved, usually in humiliating circumstances. He got a good offer and took it.

Unlike others, I don't have a problem with the way he coached us. Mistakes? Sure, but he took an underperforming side and did very well with it. I'm willing to see the mistakes in that light and not dwell (though am quite happy for everyone else to dwell and enjoy reading the analysis).

Not to mention the "inside-trading" information he can get from the latest Iron Ore explorer in the Pilbara plus the other WA spec stocks. Now it's the Freo players who can be on the "Fevola-esque" receiving end of "the stocks I'm gambling on are getting hammered on the Australian Stock Exchange rants coaching footy is just my hobby type of attitude." He could become Gina Reinharts new bitch!

Good riddance Lyon you never got us a flag. You just sold more Saints supporter voodoo dolls in Haiti than anyone else in history.

**** you Lyon!

Yep, if somebody isn't interested they don't have to read it. There's an obvious Saints angle so nothing wrong with the discussion.

That being said, I'm completely over it. ;)

Can we have a Ross Lyon thread so it doesnt derail the media or other threads!! ;)

Re: 2012 Media Thread

He made some references to the Saints and it was reported in the media. No biggie to let people have a natter about it in our media thread? Seems that it is just about done & dusted here (who knows - might have a bit more life on SS).

If we start talking about the merits of coaching moves in the Freo box then maybe the line has been crossed, the end of an era reached, the bubble pricked, the Saints fans none too pleased.

In the words of someone who's name escapes me "I've done nothing illegal".

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...ruit-tommy-walsh/story-e6frexwr-1226279941918

Kennelly "Tommy is technically very sound. St Kilda have done a great job with his kicking."

He was on the verge of selection in the St Kilda seniors a number of times but only made it as far as being named an emergency five times.

"He's much happier than he was at St Kilda."

Shouldn't this be in the Media thread? :D

I'm still really pissed with the loss of Walsh!!!
Recruiting him was a significant investment, just the airline tickets setting up the deal would have cost them a good chunk of money.
A kid from Ireland , did we not think he might need an extra bit of attention?
A mature age player who had switched codes when he was at the pinnacle of his own sport. Did no-one think he might have liked to get a game when it was deserved, or to be fast-tracked a bit?

I still hope that Archer and Stanley will work out but ffs Walsh will work out. Good key players are hard to come by ( except for f***ing sydney ) and we wont just be able to get one.

Well that had me confused as I don't remember creating a thread on Lyin'. Slightly odd choice for opening post given that I'm talking about BJ...

Look, you know I was furious to see Walsh leave, and I'm still not ecstatic about it. But it could be a "lemons to lemonade" situation. We got Markworth with the pick Sydney gave us for Walsh, and he may well turn out to be a better player.

Still, that whole fiasco still indicates a flaw in Lyon's coaching. Great at the short term goals, but totally inept at long term development of youth.

I agree, its like it was a completely ignored subject.

Whilst I'm sure there was no malicious intent, Milney (in his 3AW interview) said that it's good that (this year) you say anything to anyone whether you've played one game or 150.

OK Milney , just don't go calling the coach an Old ****, or in this case maybe a young **** or just a ****.
No good will come of it.
