If everyone had an attitude like you Chris, we'd never acheive anything. One day a team will win the flag from eighth and although it probably wont be us this year, it will happen. Because a group of people believe.

Ask Port Adelaide fans how they feel about the Crows slipping into the eight, and possibly playing Collingwood, then North - and having a PF against the Power. They're very nervous.

You might be a great bloke, but your 'toes up' attitude sucks.
This is typical of you saintsownthedome! I have read quite a few of your posts and have noticed that you constantly dribble this Anthony Robbins crap. Teams don't win flags because supporters believe and we won't win the flag this year no-matter-what now. Our season is done and we won't win it, simple as that. This isn't a movie mate. Live in reality.

Now I enjoy my football, and believe I am fair in my general opinions of our Victorian Clubs. I've just been reading this thread, and have been astounded by what you've written. You are simply not being a realist, I can't believe the sheer naivity shown by you in the previous post. St. Kilda have absolutely no chance in winning the big one from 8th position, if you make the finals. Being a realist, I can observe that you don't have the depth, possibly due to injuries, and you don't have the intent to go the whole way. I think for the benefit of your club, you should consider your real chance to make it this year, and you will realise that St Kilda won't make it the whole way this year.
As much as I hate to admit it, this guy is spot on. Everyone on this board has to stop kidding themselves about some rubbish fairytale. The simple fact is, that in todays competition nobody can win it from eighth spot. The draw becomes too hard and there is a reason teams finish in eighth, because they can't string enough games together in succession. This is exactly what needs to happen in finals and it is this fact which is why we can't win the flag this year. We simply can't get enough wins on the board in a row.
I'm not sure that I agree with either of these views.

While there is life, there is hope. Especially in a season where there are so many clubs that are so close together on the ladder. The fourth bottom team this year is capable of beating almost any team in the league.

Even if the eighth team doesn't win a match, there is the benefit of playing finals.

The Saints low position on the ladder is due to it's earlier season form, not the later season form - where it has beaten several finalists - so "can't win" is not a rational statement, it may be realistic though. (If that makes any sense).

The "previous post" you mentioned was mine. That was intended to show the possibilities for the final position - at the time - after Rd 22.

I could of course stay at home and sort my socks on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but instead I refuse to give up hope and will cheer for ... eergh ... Collingwood and the Saints.

One thing that I have seen this year, is that anything appears possible (well, almost anything - apologies, Carlton supporters). Who would have guessed that

(i) Geelong would actually exploit their full potential and put together the amazing string of wins (it remains to be seen how the Port loss and finals pressure will affect them)

(ii) Port is now to be considered one of the premiership favourites (I am honest, I would have tipped them out of the eight before the season)

(iii) Hawthorn and the Kangaroos made the finals and have a real chance to finish in the top four

(iv) Adelaide and St Kilda are struggling to even make the finals with one of them missing out

(v) Fremantle and Melbourne will not make the finals (many people had Freo as favourites for the flag at the beginning of the season)

(vi) Baker will get seven ... oh well, that is another topic

I will not bet my house on it, but with a bit of luck, anything is possible if we make the finals ! I may be naive, but should we win the flag (as unlikely as it may be), I will be glad that I have not given up hope just yet. And if we don't win it, well, I will still be a faithful supporter and fire up my hope for next year (aren't we all used to the agony of defeat - but don't we all love the suspense and hope of playing finals ?).

Thats ok mate - we can agree to disagree here.

I'll continue to stay positive, and you keep finding the negatives for us.

The problem with mining for garbage is that it's all you ever find...

If people want to mope and say, "It's hopeless, we suck, we always suck, we'll never take the flag." Fine. It just seems to me a pointless way to "enjoy" what is designed to be entertainment and a hobby. Football, in case we all forget this, is meant to be FUN. Of course we should get gutted when we lose, and sad if we don't make the finals, but if all we ever do is complain and everything, what's the bleedin' point? Go take up lawn bowls...

Look, I keep being hopeful because it's the most fun side of marginally realistic. Us finishing first on the ladder is not realistic, and so I don't hope for that. Us winning the next thrity flags is not realistic, so I don't hope for that. Us making the finals, winning a few games through hard work and a little luck IS realistic. I admit, so is Adelaide winning and us losing to the Tiges, and us finishing a little dissappointed in a coaches first year - while I will accept that if it comes, at the moment it's the least fun option, and so I dismiss it.

Forgive me for wanting to be cheerful and positive.

I can see that you want to enjoy Australian Football as a sport, and find entertainment in it, but what long term joy will come to you if you are always pumping your team up, only to be let down in the next few weeks. You have to be realistic in terms of what chance you have to secure the ultimate prize, if not, a false hope is built just for it to be taken back down. I know from the experiences with my club, that the worst experience is to have so much expected and written about your team, just to see it all fall apart. You can be cheerful and positive, but do it in a constructive manner. Don't be cheerful and positive about mediocrity, that will never get you anywhere. Do you think during the nineties, that the Brisbane high-flyers accepted their poor form? No, of course not. And look where they ended up 5-10 years later! You simply can't say that you will find more fun out of being positive about a middle-of-the-range club, than criticizing them and bringing them into brilliance several years later. A certain honesty is really needed if you are serious about your club, and I think that is needed in the present situation.

Agree! If we take Stkildas last 2-3 years we can see a reoccuring theme; St Kilda frequently get into the 8 but fall short of the ultimate prize. StKilda as a football club are often viewed as overrated, this theory is rubbish. The problem is StKilda and their fans do not know how to react to their own performance as a team. Had Stkilda supporters been more realistic about their chances they may have already experianced the ultimate prize.

Getting back to the original theme of this thread, I would like to see us go into round 22 with the same team as round 21, except Harvey to replace Attard, and Thommo to replace Birss. The emergencies to be Armitage, Brooks, and Watts.
If Adelaide should beat Collingwood Friday night, our season is over, so we then play all three emergencies to have a further look at them.

So it's our supporters that are to blame for our lack of success over the years? :)
