Smith, ahead of Shiels, was appointed captain when Roughead missed games this season so you would think he is the front runner.

Yep Smith for captain is how I see the tealeaves, not my call, just how I see it.
Smith will shake things up when it comes to letting stuff slip ( will keep someon here happy) if his performance at the PCM is anything to go by " hey jornos, two beers and a pizza and I'll tell ya anything"

Sheila for mine.

Roughy puts the team first always and is doing so once more. Love you Roughy!

Gunston has to be the next captain. Shiels seems too quiet and Issie maybe a tiny bit too much of a larrikin for the role. Gunston speaks and acts like a leader and would definitely be suited for the step up.

Please no with Tom Mitchell. He’s an accumulating beast and should stick to that - I don’t want to see him bogged down with the captaincy. Leadership group - absolutely. Captaincy - nah.

Keep saying such sensible and thoughtful things and you will become my new fav poster. ;-)

I and all Hawk supporters love Stratts and I would not have a problem if he became captain.

I wonder if enough is going on upstairs for him to be the captain though, or maybe it’s an act

Needs a hair cut first

I can't take anyone with a mullet seriously!

For those doubting Smith's credentials as captain, bear in mind that he was a captain in all but name for the second half of this season.

Great career, Roughie, you’ll always be a Hawthorn legend.
Great footballer, leader and all round great guy.

As for next in line, the Hawks have always been a club who appoints the next in line; Smith and Shiels are not vice-captains by accident. Michael Tuck was promoted to captain when he was 33 years old, and went on to captain 4 premierships!

I reckon Smithy is there, with Shiels VC.

From Luke Hodge to Isaac Smith? Geez, now that’s a drop off!!! A hawthorn captain needs have a bit of mongrel and alpha traits so no to issie, he is just a damn fine player and leave it at that.

Wow dont let smiths demeanour persuade u about how he is as a footballer and leader. He is one of loudest out on the track and is currently a leader of this football club. Time to make it official

To be honest, and this will be unpopular. I will be really disappointed if it's Shiels.

I know everyone says he is rated highly internally etc., but to me it would feel like a participation medal, we keep trying to make him appear better than he is (the same way we do with all the club media). Ignoring the fact that a number of other clubs would barely know him, and never put time into him, he just seems to have zero presence or leadership. I rarely even see Shiels talking on the field, just seems like a background person, and to me that's not a leader of men.

I don't really care how many tackles he lays, or how much 'pressure' he applies, that's not enough to lead, those things are work ethic and should be expected by default. Look at Big Boy (who I would seriously consider), since moving across this guy has BECOME the brown and gold, he is emotionally invested at a deep level. Shiels rarely talks to media, leads groups in the huddles, takes control on the field, directs traffic or senses the moment and seriously steps up with a game-defining or changing play (Hodge would just put himself in the middle).

I think back to so many of our past captains, and they VISIBLY espoused leadership on the field, some examples:
1) Everyone knows that famous picture of Hodge pointing with the bandage on his head, or a 40M handball to break the lines, or bouncing up from a huge hit in a marking contest (or playing with broken ribs and a smile)
2) Mitchell's game saving tackle on Shane Tuck in the dying minutes against Richmond in 2010?
3) Don Scott doing... well, anything!

To me Shiels is a nice guy, a capable footballer, but mediocrity. I can't think of any previous examples where he has shown exceptional leadership with a game breaking run, a big hit, extreme toughness, a match-winning goal, an intercept mark in the dying seconds etc. etc.

I want a captain whose heart is visibly on their sleeve, and who will visibly give their all when it matters to lift the team, not a background tagger who I feel is largley in the team because Langford was never good enough to take his spot.

Big nod to Rough for his leadership during the past two years and really, over his career. He has been one of the leaders for much of his time at the club given how young the team was when he arrived. I think it is the right move and will free him up to focus on his football and hopefully, enable him to reach the 300 games milestone.

Whilst I think that Smith and Shiels would make terrific captains form and consistency have been a bit of a concern in recent years. Tough call but I think the team would benefit with a new generation of leadership as part of a makeover and new identity as the club is well into a new era now.

I agree that it will be a huge disappointment if Liam Shiels is made captain. He is a good man with a good attitude. But he is not in the top half of players in the competition. Those kind of guys become captains of mediocre clubs, like St Kilda (who is Jaryn Geary?). These are the type of mediocre clubs who need their captains to be excellent citizens, rather than excellent footballers. This is because their clubs are so flimsy that "team effort" is a reason to celebrate.

We are not that club.

For instance, Richie Vandenberg was also an excellent man with a great try-hard attitude. His effort was unbelievable, but his skills were shite. When he was captain we were mediocre. He was installed to teach a crop of very young players the basics. That purpose was complete by 2007 and when he left the captaincy, our era of mediocrity ended.

Together with Alpha leadership, we moved into being an Alpha club. We have won 4 flags since. Our club now expects excellence, not just effort.

Jack Gunston is an elite forward with leadership presence. He is a big game player and might have won a Norm Smith medal. He has kicked more grand final goals than any player in the competition. He should be captain.

Absolutely correct.
And you don't have to be a grump to be a leader either.

Smithy and Shiels are vice-captains for a reason, obviously they are stand out leaders at the club.

If our midfield develops, or we pick up a Coniglio in the next 12 months, Shiels will be borderline best 22. Don’t want that with our captain. Creates selection issues.

That’s the elephant in the room.
I was thinking the same, if scully is good to go, wingard plays mid and Howe, Worpel, Cousins step up he will be down the order a bit then if we bring in another established mid next year like cogs he'll be at box Hill or another club.

Alternatively he could be named captain and really step up.

Fantastic job from Roughy the last two seasons. Certified Hawthorn Legend! Hope he's able to wind the clock back this year and impact some games.

Hawthorn usually plays with a straight bat with Captains historically. Next in line gets it typically. In the past I thought Shiels was the head of the next generation in the queue behind the Roughead/Lewis generation. But based upon last year, it looks like Smith has taken over the position of next. So I'm expecting him to be named.

I'll be happy with whomever gets named though. We're blessed with a good number of seemingly acceptable candidates.

Just please, please, please - none of this co-captain nonsense!
