Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Just did the exercise picking the side v what looks like the Essendon line up at this stage anyway. It's interesting because they won't have Pears and so Fletcher is likely to have to play KP rather than 3rd tall defender. They have no Hill so Bellchambers becomes the second ruck perhaps and will play forward at times. Though you would think Williams will play full forward at times. I think we might be able to stretch them with Roughead playing forward and I like our midfield against theirs especially with no Hill in ruck.

B: H.Slattery Fletcher McVeigh
F: Giansiracusa Hall Roughead

HB: Heppel Hooker Stanton
HF: Djerkurra Grant Higgins

C: Jetta Welsh Zaharakis
C: Sherman Cross Griffen

HF: Williams Gumbleton Hurley
HB: Murphy Williams Morris

F: Davey Bellchambers Monfries
B: Gilbee Lake Picken

R: Ryder Watson Howlett
R: Hudson Boyd Cooney

I: Hocking Melksham Prismall
I: Ward Wood Veszpremi

S: Reimers
S: Moles/Wallis

Wow I cannot believe the faith shown in our new recruits we got in trades particulary Vez and Djerkurra. (Sherman proven experience at the level).

Neither did anything to suggest they were locks in any AFL 22 last year and in previous years. Neither impressed greatly in the intraclub (Djuerkurra didn't play forward thats for sure) either.

Id be filthy is I were D Addison or E Wood among othersd after they cememted their spots late last year in big games yet to be dropped or sitting on the pine for round 1 the next year to unproven players.

Lake, Murphy and Cooney wont all be available round 1.
Best we can hope for is 2 of the 3.

Wood is a lock for a round 1 defensive spot for mine, but Addison is suspended for round 1.
Addison actually loks like being prime sub material when he is available - can play middle, back, run-with role or defensive forward, and has the grit to stick to a task once set.
Definately lacks polish and his selection may depend on how well some of our outside players such as Sherman are using the ball.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

After the Intra Match and NAB Cup games Vs Kangaroos and Cats, here is how I see it for Round 1:

B: Morris Lake Wood
HB Gilbee Williams Picken
C: Cross Boyd Ward
HF Higgins Grant Murphy
F: Giansiracusa Hall Sherman
Foll: Hudson Cooney Griffen
Int: ? ? ? ?

The last four spots will be hotly contested for Round 1. They will be fought between the following players, whose fortunes are listed below.

Players who have enhanced their claims for selection:
Vespa
Djerrkah
Moles
Wallis
Liberatore

Neutral:
Roughead
Jones
Minson
Hahn
Addison

Have slipped back a little:
Hill

**Hargrave and Reid unavailable

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Liam Jones a certainty IMO. Provides a strong contest at CHF (I see more long kicking down the line in the AFL this year) and his defensive stuff is awesome.

A certainty? Based on what? His games at Skilled stadium yesterday? I'm not sold on him at CHF yet. At best he might be pushing for an interchange/sub spot, but he aint no certainty.

I think Murphy will play back for a start. I think we would be looking for pace on the bench so Djerrkurra is in front based on that. Roughead or Minson will play, I am favoring Roughead this week.

Veszpremi enhanced his chances this week and I think they will elevate Hahn from the rookie list and he'll be the sub. He can play multiple roles and could be ideal as the sub. He looked good in game 1.

Hill didn't do enough, neither did Jones. Addison was pretty good and so was Moles so they are still in the mix for sure.

So my bench this week is Djerrkurra, Roughead, Veszpremi. Sub Hahn.

I don't think Jones is anywhere near a certainty. 2 reasons, 1. He's not shown that much in the games I have seem him in this pre season. 2. If we have Jones and Roughead/Minson, then we look a bit tall to me. I'm pretty sure we will go in with 2 rucks and we should.

Not very well.

You were obviously watching a different game to me.... His lack of mobility was frighteningly obvious.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

I think Addison and Moles should both be in the team ahead of players like Djerkurra and Veszpremi. See how the rest of the challenge matches go before we make our minds up on them, seeing as we havent seen them play for us very much, whereas we have seen Addison and Moles, who both did quite well in yesterdays NAB cup games

Addison misses rd 1 due to suspension.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Agree Moles should be in the team as well as Vespa at this stage. The 2nd ruck spot is up well and truly up for grabs. Roughead is probably the preferred choice at this stage though.

Well can't agree. Not frighteningly obvious at all...in my books anyway.

He looked pretty good to me yesterday and in the intra club game, I must admit I had just about written him off...but I always keep and open mind and don't maintain a set on anyone and so far he's performed above where I would have thought. He can certainly play both ends. I'd like to see someone else demand the spot ahead of him. I'd like to see Hill or even Jones banging the door down, but so far at least they are not.

Mitch offers flexibility, not playing a full game may also suit him. Otherwise we are looking at Moles perhaps, who gives us a midfield option but that's all. Wallis the same. Maybe it's all we will want.

But at end of NAB 1 I think Hahn is in the mix.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

I have Jones as a certainty based on his forward pressure, his competitveness in the air, and the fact that we need a tall option across half-forward. I genuinely think there'll be much more long kicking down the line this season and more contested footy overall. Jones has serious speed and will just get better with game time. A certainty for mine.

Mitch got beaten twice by Leigh Brown last year when in defence. That isn't a glowing endorsement for his defensive capabilities.

Well...not saying he's among the first choice in that position, rather that he is capable at playing there if required, and could be called upon to do a job as a sub if we got an injury to one of the first choice KPD during a game. Also it's a bit unfair to base it on last year because he really lost his way. Do we measure Higgins on last year? He couldn't move in the finals, but looks fantastic once again.

Going by what I have seen so far this preseason, I'm not sure Hahn is done with just yet either.

His number one position is to play forward though I agree. And you maybe 100% correct that he's gone. I'm just not so sure as you at this stage.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

I am unsure on Jones. He has very good forward pressure, which is what we lacked a lot of last season, so that is a big positive for him, and he is quite good in contests, but to me he just doesn't seem to get in the right spots enough, and kick enough goals. Im sure it will come in time, as KPF take a while, but for me he just seems out of the play way too much.

Its not like he is taking the number 1 defender or anything yet either. I just dont know what the problem is.
He should probably stay in for natural progression and experience for himself, and for forward pressure for the team, as well as getting a goal or 2 every so often.
We dont really have a different option to him do we?

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Hahn should never be considered as having to play key position. He showed that his true value is being able to crash and bash in close contested football. Not his ability to spoil or take a huge grab. If anything, he should play centre midfield or as a medium forward. If we play a forward line consisting of Hall, Grant, Jones, Gia, Higgins and Hahn then Mitch will take the 4th largest backman and destroy them. Too tall you say? I disagree, because Jones and Grant chase and tackle like they are rovers. Hahn would slay his opponent in a 1 on 1, or he could rove to the others and just force the ball forward with strength and brute force.

We were saying the same about Grant a year ago, and he's more than a year older than Jones. Jones last year was better than Grant in '09, and he has a golden opportunity early in the season to get some runs on the board.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Moles wouldn't be in my round 1 team. Thought he was very quiet in both games yesterday. Not to say he won't turn it around, but I think a few have jumped ahead of him. Those include Veszpremi, DJ and Wallis.

Addison was impressive - good chance to play a lot of early footy after his suspension.

I too thought he was quiet in the 2nd game, but then remembered that he was subbed out after game 1 along with Hahn & Ward. ;)

He was pretty reasonable in game 1.

Moles was definately better than DJ, Vez and Wallis yesterday. He played great in the first game I thought. Particularly at the start. Im not saying that wont change, but I think going on yesterday, Moles is a bit more deserving at the moment.

Whether Moles is more deserving or not, is not the criteria that selectors will use when they prepare for Essendon in Round 1.

Moles is a primarily a midfielder who is not as versitile as say Vespa or Djerrukah are. For this reason alone, he is behind these players and would have to show substantially greater form if he is to leapfrog them before the season starts...

Perhaps you should watch it again.

He had 12 possessions and 5 marks in the 1st game. 2nd game he didn't play ;)
