First crack at this:

Stiffy Rutten (fingers crossed) Otten
Doughty Talia Jaensch
Smith Vince MacKay
Sloane Tippett Danger
Porps Tex Petrenko

Jacobs VB Thommo

I/C Douglas, Lynch, Jenkins, Callinan

Shit thats hard

I might be biased but I can't find a spot for Reilly or Henderson;)

Lynch is clearly in front Johston, by a long way; Mckernan and Jerkins both performed better than expected; McIntyre and Callinan equally rated - That may go down to the wire.

Still wanna see Johnston go forward before I make a call. Not sure if he's a natural defender. Unfair to compare him to Lynch if he's playing out of position.

To be fair all the talk about Johnston from the club has been about him being a defender

Thats just their thoughts though. Did he play much as a defender as a junior or at Sydney?

I think I would swap Douglas(Doughty) with Shaw and possible Jenkins with McKernan, but thats still a 50/50 decision and you could consider both as inclusions, instead of Callinan as there is Porplyzia and Petrenko in the side.

Lynch is a shoe in I reckon.
Still a toss up between Jenkins and Smack.
Shaw ahead of Johnston and Thompson.
Callinan in.
Smith definate starter.
Otten best game in a long time, keeps that up and he deserves his spot on merit.
Whilst these kids have all played well tonight - and many of them also played well last week, the fact is that very few of them will be in the team for R1. With just 22 slots available, there aren't all that many vacancies when you consider the number (and quality) of players who sat this one out.

Automatic selections to return would include Thompson, VB, Rutten (hopefully), Tippett, Reilly, Doughty.

I'd suggest that there's only room for one of McKernan & Lynch (could go either way). Smith is the only other starter who appears a lock at this point in time, with Otten set to retain his position as 3rd tall defender.

Callinan is far from a certain starter, good though he has been. Heck, he's not even certain of getting promoted to the senior list (I'd say his promotion is the least likely of the 3 options available - no promotion, then McIntyre, then Callinan).

Really wish I'd seen the first half of the game tonight (I only caught the second half). While I got to see Porps playing some really good footy and Walker doing his usual Jekyll & Hyde act, I missed out on seeing Douglas & Crouch performing at their best.

Henderson off HBF intrigues me. I wonder if this will suit him. If i can remember, the AFC had thoughts of Henderson as a half back when they drafted him?

first crack:

B: Stiffy, Rutten, Otten
HB: Smith, Talia, Doughty
C: Sloane, Thompson, Vince
HF: Danger, Tex, Lynch
F: Porps, Tippett, Callinan
R: Jacobs, VB, Douglas

I/C Knights, Mackay, Jenkins
Sub: Kerridge

Did you forget about Petrenko and Jaensch, or were their omission meant?

I would have them in place of Douglas and Knights.

There is plenty of love for Otten however at this stage I don't believe that he has done enough to secure a spot in our best 22

With this in mind I don't believe that NC managed his return well at all last year and as a result Otto still lacks form and confidence and it would not do him any harm at all to fight back through the sanfl

B: Johncock, Rutten, Otten
HB: Jaensch, Talia, Doughty
C: Sloane, S.Thompson, Vince
HF: Smith, Tippett, Lynch
F: Porps, Walker, Douglas
R: Jacobs, Van Berlo, Dangerfield

I/C: Petrenko, Mackay, Jenkins
Sub: Knights
Emg: Shaw, Reilly, Kerridge

Gee that's hard. At the moment it's 50/50 between Otten and Shaw for the 3rd tall and 50/50 between Doughty and Reilly for that HBF spot. The next two weeks will find that out. Knights as a super-sub to come on for a lesser performing HFF-type. Love to get Kerridge in there but just can't squeeze anyone out!

EDIT: Swapped Tippett to CHF and Walker to FF.

Sometimes individual players need to have some accountablity place on them, for their own preparation and performance.

Having another crack at this side whilst watching last nights game.

Johncock Rutten Shaw

Smith Talia VB

MacKay Patty Vince

Petrenko Tip Porps

Jenkins Walker Lynch

Jacobs Thommo Sloane

Int Douglas, Jeansch, Reilly, McKernan

I dunno how this holds up, glad I aint a selector its too hard lol. I get a feeling Symes may be in round one. But I did not pick him.

Just realised left Dogga out as well.

One thing I know for certain, Jacobs, Thommo, Sloane and Patty are our best four in the middle. And Porps, Vince, VB, and Douglas are definetly the second tier mids. Our depth in midfield is quite handy now that the "correct" players are starting in the middle.

first crack:

B: Stiffy, Rutten, Otten
HB: Smith, Talia, Doughty
C: Sloane, Thompson, Vince
HF: Danger, Tex, Lynch
F: Porps, Tippett, Callinan
R: Jacobs, VB, Douglas

I/C Knights, Mackay, Jenkins
Sub: Kerridge

Callinan is still on the rookie list. IMO both Petrenko and Jaensch are certain starters. Kerridge had questionable disposal. Reilly has a strong claim for a spot on the HBF.

Hmmm. My take: Kerridge, Knights and Callinan out from your lsit. Petrenko, Reilly and Jaensch in. Reilly on HBF, Jaensch back pocket, Otten & Doglas on the bench, Smith as sub.

B: Stiffy, Rutten, Jaensch
HB: Reilly, Talia, Doughty
C: Sloane, Thompson, Vince
HF: Mackay, Tex, Lynch
F: Porps, Tippett, Petrenko
R: Jacobs, VB, Danger

I/C Otten, Douglas, Jenkins
Sub: Smith

PS: This is very hard. There are viable alternatives aplenty.

If Rutten is not fit, then Talia to FB and Ottens to CHB, Henderson to the I/C and Doughty becomes sub.

At some point, the older players need to give the up & coming players, first crack.

I think the most potent forward line has tippet at CHF with Walker at FF.

This means its much harder to double and triple team Kurt. It also allows Kurt to use his contested marking a bit further up the ground.

It should also stop the mids banging the ball inside 50 as Taylor is more of a leading mobile type.

I think Tom Lynch is looking like an excellent pick up. The knock was he had no weapons...too short for KPP and too slow for anything else. They forgot to mention he has 2 massive weapons....his football brain and his cleaness with the ball.

Noticed in the first game that when Kurt does lead up the ground and draws a crowd, Tom is very smart at using the space Kurt creates to provide the outlet option as we come out of defence.

Early form suggests he is a very smart player that knows how to work off the key forwards and who is currently making the third forward spot his own. Jack who???????

Like this side other than Doughty in for Henderson. I imagine Doughty would start though and so perhaps Shaw to the Sub.

Apart from a a few arguments here or there the side pretty much picks itself currently. However most of the players we would consider to be in our best 22 in round 1 of 2012 have had their fingerprints all over the mess of 2010 and the abject failure of 2011.

Its great to see so much pressure coming up from below and Im certain if the garbage served up by our so called core best 22 in 2010/11 is repeated in the first couple of rounds, there will be plenty of opportunity for others.

You are more than likely to be right, but I was just leaning towards our youth, knowing that the first game wasn't against a top eight side. Thus steeling our senior players, like Doughty, for the tougher games ahead.

The forgotten man, is Tambling, who's first half was useful (cleaner hands and disposal, and a very good mark). He may come in to calculations, if he play's against Coolingwood.

No problem with that philosophy and Im no flag waver for Mick Doughty...just reckon thats how they will go round 1.
