F: Wright -- Walker -- Lynch

HF: Porplyzia -- Tippett -- Douglas

C: Smith -- Thompson -- Henderson

HB: van Berlo -- Talia -- Jaensch

B: Johncock -- Rutten (Thompson L. on standby) -- Otten

R: Jacobs -- Thompson -- Sloane

Int: McKernan -- Vince -- Doughty

Sub: Petrenko

Under strong consideration but not included: Thompson L, Reilly, Knights, Tambling, Callinan, Mackay, Jenkins,

Not really considered: Symes, Kerridge, Lyons, McIntyre, Shaw

Why no Mackay?

A couple of thoughts on the round 1 team:

1. Think it's Lynch OR Jenkins OR McKernan. I think only 1 will make the side. I know some have said it would work, but still think if you're gonna play top heavy, your bigs have to be quite talented and have plenty of strings to their bow.

2. I like Petrenko, but see some have him in their side over Wright. Wright is infront at this stage. Has been nursed through pre-season, but if fit should play.

3. I like the idea of Hendo as sub. I've said before I like his unorthodox X-factor. Brings something different to the team.

4. Otten as 3rd tall. Has the experience edge. Give Shaw some more time in the SANFL and I think he'll blossom. L. Thompson is also a personal favourite.

5. Jaensch must be in the side. While the rest of the AFL are turning into athletes, he is a genuine Footballer.

6. Douglas, Doughty and Reilly must be in our top 10 players every week if they want to stay in the team. They are walking on eggshells.

That is all. :)

Good on you Bob for having a go. Not too far off IMHO.

No way, however, that Wright is ahead of a number of others.

I would say promote Pretenko and delete Wright, and put both Reilly and Knights either into the 22 or on standby, and you would be getting very close.

Good to have some depth. We will see what it looks like when a few injuries strike. However, we are in a better position depth wise than we have been for a while.:thumbsu:

Why no Mackay?

Good question - I'm a big wrap for him generally and consider him a 'best 22' player all else being equal. However I think last season counts against him and he'll need to make up ground in the early rounds in SANFL so I don't see him in the side at this stage. As a choice between Mackay and Smith I think Smith has done more recently (end of 2011 and this pre-season) and will be improving at a greater rate so he's gets the nod from me.

Hopefully this debate becomes redundant within a few rounds of the start of the season.

B: Johncock, Rutten, Jaensch
HB: Shaw, Talia, Smith
C: Sloane, S.Thompson, Mackay
HF: Vince, Tippett, Lynch
F: Porps, Walker, Petrenko
R: Jacobs, Van Berlo, Dangerfield

I/C: Otten, Reilly, McKernan
Sub: Henderson
Emg: Doughty, Knights, Jenkins

If Rutten is not fit, then Talia to FB and Ottens to CHB, Henderson to the I/C and Doughty becomes sub.

At some point, the older players need to give the up & coming players, first crack.

Now, this is a well thought out team. :thumbsu::thumbsu::D

You cant be serious about McKay...he is a walk-up start, a barometer of our side...

Why?

He was very ordinary last year. Averaged only 15 touches and 62 Champion Data points. He's been talked up all pre-season but didn't show much in our first NAB cup game. From what we've seen so far surely it's a fair call to have Smith take his spot?

Am i the only one who wants to see Johncock up forward again?

We are arguing about who should be in the backlines along side him, he is one of our best small forwards/half forward flankers. If we end up needing him back there we can always switch him back again.

I don't mind Wright but Petrekno would be way ahead of Wright at the moment.

Way ahead? By what measure? 2 preseason games?

I think we need Johncock in the backline this year, but definitely see him finishing his career as a forward. :thumbsu:

I reckon he is one of the most versatile players on our list.

Can damage a side from defence by shutting down a forward entry, then set up an attack from HB. And then when needed can play forward and kick a couple of sneaky goals.

Probably the only player who can play at either end of the ground and win the game for us.

Douglas started the game very well.

Been put on notice? Or maybe he's just a good player who played well.

I think the former.

Oops - thanks...have edited now.
Bob, is it true that you sold your car for a six pack of beer?

You and Bickley I reckon.

That was his move - Johncock to the forward line. Bit like Ayers move of Ricciuto to the goal square, or Neil's change up of Stevo to play loose in defence - aces up the sleeve to use in times of trouble.

What will Sando's trademark move be?

My round one team...

Doughty, Rutten, Johncock
Otten, Talia, Reilly
Henderson, Thompson, Smith
Lynch, Tippett, Knights
Porplyzia, Walker, Vince

Jacobs, Dangerfield, Sloane
Mckernan, Van Berlo, Douglas - Symes

I would like to see the likes of Jaensch, Petrenko, Mackay, and Tambling all find another gear...

Loving Jenkins... cant find a spot for him first up...
if Rutten doesn't come up - Sam Shaw would get the gig..

this team should be aiming to tear Gold Coast apart...and leave us sitting top of the table after round one... or right there with the swans, who should rag doll GWS...

Go Crows...

My effort, with a little fence sitting.

Lynch Walker Callinan/Wright
Sloane Tippett Porps
Mackay Thompson Vince
Otten Talia Jaensch
Johncock Rutten Doughty
Ruck: Jacobs VB Danger

Inter: Jenkins, Knights, Smith (Petrenko/Tambling/Hendo)

I wrote out our entire list and after counting them realised I was missing one player from our senior list. Turns out it was Douglas, our B&F from 18 months ago! I'm no Pizza Boy hater but he is definitely low on the radar at the moment.

What I think will be the team :

B: Johncock Rutten Jaensch
HB: Smith Talia Shaw
C: Dangerfield S.Thompson Mackay
HF: Porplyzia Tippett Vince
F: Knights Walker Douglas
R: Jacobs Sloane Van Berlo
INT: Jenkins Petrenko Doughty Reilly (sub)

Emergency: Callinan, Otten , Lynch, L Thomson
Just realised I fogot to include Henderson on my Half Back Line. This will mean Reilly is out. No room for Otten in my team , Shaw and Henderson have the pace plus Shaw is a left footer and we need a couple of them in the team. Tempted to not go with Jenkins and use Tippett as second ruck and rest Dangerfield at full forward when Tippett goes into ruck to give Jacobs a short spell.

I'm with you, partly because I think Jaensch is (or can be) the new Johncock, and those two can swap forward/back to spell.

It's been really interesting to realise that I trust Jaensch as much as Stiffy when it comes to kicking in from behinds and delivering the ball out of the back 50. Stiffy's interception skills and general defensive pressure is far better, but that just means there's space for Jaensch to learn... :D
