At the start of the 2011 season I rated Adelaide as having the best list out of all the interstate clubs. But injuries & poor form has me thinking otherwise for 2012. Can Adelaide challange for a top 8 spot in 2012? If they get more improvement from the likes of Wright L.Thompson Sloane Jaensch Talia MacKay Otten Petrenko Jacobs Dangerfield Martin. Adelaide could sneak some where between 7-8 spot.

I was really impressed with Matthew Wright in 2011. He is exactly that small forward that you were looking for after Porplyzia got injured. Is set for a big 2012.

Needs a big pre-season: Richard Tambling.

Good try buddy. Mackay is in the 22 when fit and firing easily. Symes is on the fringe at best. Jaensch would be in the backline or up forward. Calinan at this stage is not in the best 22, but could be argued.

:eek::eek::eek:

When fit, Mackay is easily in our best 18. The problem has been that he is spending longer in the medical rooms than on the park and when he does come back he will play a blinder followed by a shocker because injuries have not allowed him to maintain and build up his fitness levels to the point where he can run all day and get possessions at will.

We are 10% better team when Mackay is up and running. A seriously good footballer. If Mackay do the unthinkable and play every game next year, we will have a great year. His ability to run and carry and dictate where forwards lead by his exceptional foot skills is the best we have on our list.

If his body didn't let him down over the last few years, he would be an absolute jet by now. A genuine top 5 talent on our list.

Couldn't agree more Stiffy. 2009 was the last reasonably injury free year he had and from memory he was coming second in our B&F count when he did his hamstring in the second half of the season, competing against guys like Vince, Goodwin, Porplyzia, Knights and Tippett who with the exception of Goody were in career best form at the time.

My best 22 would be as follows:

Wright Walker Knights
Hendo Tippett VB
Smith S.Thompson Mackay
Jaensch L.Thompson Vince
Johncock Rutten Otten

Ruck: Jacobs Sloane Danger

Int: Callinan, Talia, Riley
Sub: Porps or Brown

Think it may be worthwhile to try Vince (or maybe Knights) permanently off half-back...much like the Mackie role with Geelong. If this fails then Doughty to come back in for Vince. Hendo is the other I'm not totally sold on, but he's shown enough to persist with in my view. Porps is a permanent risk now, hence a sub...until he can stand up for a few weeks without injury. I thought LT was more impressive than Talia in 2011 hence he'd get my nod.

I just don't see Douglas, Reilly, Pets (as much as I admire his tenacity) or Tambling being in our best 22.

Absolute speculation to try and pick a side even before pre-season starts. Madness really, but WTF, I'll have a crack at it anyway

I think the addition of Brown, Lynch, Johnston and Ellis to our squad makes it even more difficult, as they will be busting their arses to try and get in our team from day 1. I've assumed that Lynch , who was recruited to play the Gunston role, will do exactly that, while Johnston was recruited as a key backman or 3rd tall, and I've assumed that he's in as well

Here goes:

F: Dangerfield Walker Wright

HF: Lynch Tippett Knights

C: Mackay Thompson Smith

HB: Doughty Talia Otten

B: Johncock Rutten Johnston.

Ruck Jacobs Vince van Berlo

Int: Sloane, Douglas, Jaensch

Sub: Petrenko

Emerg: McKernan, Brown, Porplyzia

Pushing Hard: Henderson, Luke Thompson, Reilly, Riley,Tambling, Jenkins

As I said, near impossible to pick it at this stage.

Would love Sam Shaw to be pushing for the starting 22 as what i have seen from him he is a smooth mover and we dont have anyone like him in our team. Is also reasonably quick.

Lynch and Johnston havent done anything at AFL level to be in our best 22 . Johnston's U18 highlights is all we can go by .

Petrenko has got to be starting 18, and B.Reilly play to play every game.....at Sturt....
Will be very interesting to see who stands up out of L.Thompson, Lynch, Johnston and Mckernan. Hopefully with the influence of sando smack can get some aggression into his game and start to become the player he could be..

Smack is like a Gumby too clumsy its like his brain goes missing during periods of the game that it looks like he aint aggresive cause he does the most clumsiest things. Sorry do not think he will make it , will tease us but how long can you go with tease

I've read in some pyschology document somewhere that quite often when people look gangly and clumbsy like smack (and danger also has that look a bit) its because their body has grown so fast that their brain hasn't been able to catch up with it, expect it to fade over time and for him to really hit his straps then. Dont forget the big guys can take years to come on** and that's what I think will happen with smack - there's a lot of upside waiting for us in the future.

**I remember watching Cox, Sandilands and Jamar running around looking useless ( far worse that what smack has looked) for years before coming good.

I tend to avoid these since it just gets me excited about positional moves that never end up happening (more often due to injury than anything else), and I can never squeeze in all the players that deserve it, but what the hell. Let's give it a go :)

Bench: Smith, Tambling, L.Thompson, S/Brown

I think Thompson has proven himself as a good player, Johnston hasn't yet. Same with Lynch. He is also able to play forward and back like the other 2.

I think our forward line should become much less static, get Tip in the ruck more, make Walker more of a focus along with Porps.

He turned 21 last month and has played a total of 17 games of AFL football. It's not exactly unusual for players his size (198cm 98kg) to take longer to develop. Let's not write him off just yet.

My thoughts on your team :thumbsu:

1. I like the idea of MacKay off the HBF, could really get him into the game. I presume he'd be playing the purely attacking HBF, probably the extra man back?

2. I personally reckon Smith should be put ahead of Douglas. Douglas' form is hardly flattering, and Smith needs more oppotunity to realise his potential. Even if Smith turns out to be an average player (I have hope for him), he'll still be able to do whatever Douglas does, but more effectively IMO.

3. What role do you imagine L. Thompson playing off the bench?

3. LOL! at Petrenko getting the sub vest.

I really like the look of that team though, looks strong and innovative.

Ta for the feedback man :thumbsu:

I know it's overstated, but Douglas is a best and fairest winner. He's no dud, especially when he's fit and going. I like Smith but he's not there yet.

That said I'd be more than happy for Smith to work his way into the starting 18 over the course of the season :thumbsu:

3. What role do you imagine L. Thompson playing off the bench?

I'm imagining him changing up with Otten/Talia as necessary. Otten preferably, since Thompson strikes me as a player who is best used as a creative attacking player/third man up when necessary rather than a CHB.

3. LOL! at Petrenko getting the sub vest.

I hated giving him the sub vest  I almost contemplated leaving him out altogether since he's just not a good choice for sub - but couldn't think who else I should make the sub. Was going to make Thompson the sub but having three smalls on the bench is not a good strategy.

What is it with our Mods and Petrenko? :p

^^ I like your side there DJ, i just dont think Tambling has done anything to be selected over Wright or Smith.

I'm fairly surprised that a few of these lists are using the likes of Douglas, Petrenko, etc. as small forwards or even having the FF line as Walker, Tippet, Porplyzia and no true small forward in the area.

Personally i think we need that small forward to have a proper working forward line.

Porps is not a small forward, he is a marking forward.

Wright and Callinan are the only two "small forwards" (or able to play that position) that we have.

Douglas, Petrenko, etc. are all just stop gaps currently and should be played more in the Midfield.

Anyways,

Here's my go:

FB: Joncock Rutten Otten
HB: Danger Talia Jaensch
C: Vince S. Thompson Mckay
HF: Knights Tippet Henderson
FF: Wright Walker Porps

R: Jacobs Sloane VB

Int: Petrenko Jonston Doughty Douglas

With these players close to selection:

Callinan, Reilly, Riley, Tambling, L. Thompson, Smith, Martin, Brown, Lynch and Mckernan.

Fingers crossed Shaw and Jenkins show a bit in the Pre-Season and SANFL to get selected during the year.

I had Mckernan in my line up...looking at the other line ups mine looks top heavy.I guess Tipps could do some ruck work and i could have an extra midfielder
