I think I'd like to see Knights start the year in the SANFL. Gain some form there and then if he does hurt himself again we don't have to chop'n'change the side to much.

Out of interest, who does everyone think will be our tagger for the 2012 season? The past two in Doughty and Reilly will mainly be in the back line I'd assume so it's hard to see them being our main tagger yet I can't really think of anyone else that will get the gig. Could it be something we go without?

I don't see any reason why Van Berlo couldn't continue to do it. Cameron Ling still played the role once he was captain. Probably won't need one everyweek, but he could cover the likes of Judd and Ablett when we play them.

Team tagging. Crunch them at stoppages and everyone get stuck in.

As for tactical taggin, I see no point in taggin players like Judd, Pendles, Swan and Ablett. They're interior players who win their own ball and by tagging them, you just bring in a less useful player into your midfield and stoppages sector.

I'm much more a fan of tagging outside wing players and rebound defenders, ala D Thomas and H Shaw. Taking them out of the game is much easier than taking out an inside player and you can hurt them the other way more effectively IF you have a smart ball reader on them.

I might finally chuck my hat in the ring and give this a go. I'm assuming we're injury free here.

Code:
B: Johncock Rutten Jaensch
HB: Shaw Talia Mackay
C: Douglas S.Thompson Doughty
HF: Vince Lynch Petrenko
F: Porplyzia Tippett Walker
R: Jacobs Sloane van Berlo
INT: Jenkins Smith Dangerfield Reilly (sub)
EMG: McKernan McIntyre Tambling

Reading some of these teams, the mentality of some posters annoys/confuses me.

After last season we're still happy to have Doughty, Reilly and Douglas as automatic selections, but not Callinan.

What are we really afraid of?

But was Van Berlo really a full time tagger last season? At times I remember we saw him play a run with role where he was quite attacking but I'm not sure whether he was a set tagger every week (although I can't really remember last season that well...).

Failure!

Failing to thrive, continuing the decline, simply the dread of lossing again and again. Threading water, maintaining mediocrity, not taking the bull by the horns. Most just failure.

In my case I mulled for a while over McIntyre vs Callinan, decided on McIntyre (without much conviction, it should be said ) and then decided that I was happy with Porps and Petrenko being our smalls.

Wouldn't mind either of McIntyre or Callinan coming into that side, however, presumably for Reilly.

No Knights? I wouldnt mind seeing him play a few SANFL games as Footypie mentioned.
Replace Shaw with Otten and I am with you Stab....

And replace Mcintyre and Callinan in the emergencies. I think Mcintyre needs to show plenty more before he overtakes Callinan.

If everyone is available I think it will be a very easy team to pick. The only question is over Jenkins/Mckernan... And Knights....

Thought about Knights, he certainly has a case but you can't fit everyone into your 22. He hasn't forced his way into the side, for certain.

Definitely on the past weekend Callinan is ahead of McIntyre. Now I'm starting to second-guess my choice there  I'd be happy with either.

Jenkins ahead of McKernan for mine at the moment.

Otten is concerning me. I'd really like to see him go back to the SANFL for a while until he feels confident with the footy again. At the moment he looks nervous every time he gets near it. Shaw falls in to the spot ahead of Johnston and L. Thompson.

Heard McDermott mention on 5AA this morning that Brodie Martin had 30 touches for Sturt in 3 quarters of footy in a trial game over the weekend. Would like to see him given an opportunity . He has had that one year after the knee injury which is usually a year most footballers can write off .

Your thoughts are erudite, but I would lean towards Mckernan (just). Ottens is showing glimmers of improvement(confidence)

VB had a run with role once Bickley took the reigns.

v Port he did a job on Cassissi
v Geel I think he may have stood Selwood
v Bris he played on Black
v GC he played on Ablett
v Rich he played on Cotchin
v WCE I can't remember because I haven't dared to watch that replay

He was great in this role as he was in the engine room all the time without taking the spot of a genuine midfielder. So instead of having VB, Reilly, Thompson as our main midfielders, it allowed Danger to come in the midfield and Reilly was given the ass. Suddenly it was Thompson, VB, Dangerfield as our starting mids. Much better.

Agree with this !00%. Tag the playmakers that come off wing and halfback and you force sides to change their gameplan to some degree. We did this once--I think 2010 season--when we had, err Jaensch from fading memory tag Harrry O and J took him out.
I'd love to see Sando use this as a tactic.

That was Will Young I reckon. Not sure what season, but do know he played as a negater on Harry O and took him right out the game - its the infamous game where Lloydy gave him the TV for man of the match......

Yeah, it was Will Young. Got the telly with a 2 disposal game.

2010

What did he do with them?

I recall a couple of occasions toward the end of last season where he had 30 odd touches for Sturt, but managed to turn most of them over with shocking kicking and decision making, hence why he did not get a look in.

I have noticed many teams with Reilly as sub. Why? Experience? If the squad stays healthy i can only see room for one of Doughty or Reilly.

The sub needs to have an impact. HENDO. Has done it very well in the past (v Bris last year). His pace and huge running capacity has the ability to cut teams to shreads if he comes on with a quarter or 40 mins left. Given his good form, newfound versatility and improved bodywork (early days i know) i think Hendo is the ideal Sub.

No point having Reilly or Doughty getting subbed in and plodding around at the same pace as all the already fatigued players. Much better to have an impact and Hendo could be a gamechanger. Hendomania will be back :D

Get your eyes checked. Both will play and both will be in the 21 starters.

An interesting proposition. I can see the merit in this idea.:thumbsu:
