Wont happen, afl have a firm agenda to maximise attendances, as it acts as leverage on all fronts, sponsorship, tv rights et al. With only a handful of genuine blockbusters that can attract 70k+ the league wont be about to dish one soon

You speak truth wise one. The reality is that Richmond V essendon and Richmond V Carlton trend as the two biggest non Collingwood draws in recent years. The AFL wants to build blockbusters round not just Collingwood in case they drop off and will want to hang expectations on the rising Tiger.

There are lips smacking already in anticipation of 80K turnouts next year at R1 and Dreamtime.

Ridiculous. Will not happen. They are trying to get the MCC to change, and the MCC in turn are acting like they don't care. Will be interesting to see who backs down, but someone will.

Can someone tell me why we can't just move the GF to the first weekend in October?

I know cricket starts there season / contract then but surely an agreement could be made with Cricket Victoria to have the Bushrangers playing away the first round.

My memory may be hazy on this but we have won round one just twice in the past 20-odd years I think.
Those two victories coincided with our only two finals appearances during that period.
Now go with me on this ...
How about we play GWS in round one at the phone dome and THEN play Carlton at the MCG in round two?

Thats the whole trouble. If the players get their way for two byes, and the MCC do not back down and we keep Tiges v Carl at the G, the GF will have to be the second week in October and if by chance their was a draw, the ground wouldnt be ready to prepare the wicket until the last week in October, and the MCC will never allow that

Its a double bluff from the AFL, and now Cricket Victoria using it to push for their own center of excellence.

At the end of the day i think Vlad would hold firm, as he always get his way. And to back his point and make himself feel justified the game would still be a sell out with massive build-up and anticipation, and the fact the Tiges v Saints last Friday night had the second highest ratings for a home and away in TV history, and a billion dollar plus TV rights deal is more important than 30-40k at the venue for just the one game (For AFL number crunchers).

Its wrong as it has to be at the G, but unfortunately what Vlad wants, Vlad gets.

Im tipping the game will stay at the G, their will still be one bye, and the Junction Oval will be revamped as the new home of CV, and they will then ok the change in 2014 for the early start to accommodate the 2nd bye. It will take two years but it will be a win, win, win for everyone.

Was great to hear Benny say the other day they are hoping to have VFL and Tac played there in 2014. I miss watching the ressies there and then popping over to the G for the seniors.

Would rather wait and play them when the g is free.

Footscray, St Kilda, GWS or North at Etihad would be what we would get instead of Carlton at the g.
Not such a bad thing really, recent form has shown it's a bad match for Richmond. That said, would have been nice to take one win away before they stopped it.

Start it 1 week earlier with GWS vs Sydney again. Then the 1st week the 'G is available, Richmond and Carlton can get the season started. Just 1 week earlier than like it was this season.
That, and playe the other three interstate derbies, then the build-up for the Vic games would be massive and we can still kick off at the E.

If all that fails then for mine its a no brainer. Richmond v Saints at Etihad. This year was the biggest crowd they have had, it was the 2nd highest TV home and away ratings game ever, and according to 100% of the experts and media, the best game of the year. It would be a ripper to establish it as a genuine opening blockbuster and we can still keep the Tankers game for later on.

But, I still dont see it as a signed, sealed and delivered lock. Cricket Victoria and the MCC will still have a say. CV have their own agenda so its not over yet.

Didn't the AFL say that they want every team to play a week earlier so that they can accomodate 2 byes in the season?

Swans VS GWS a week early and the rest a week later won't solve the problem if that is the case.

Just heard on SEN that we've rejected the AFL's proposal to have the match played at Etihad.

Gale has just said that we want to play Carlton in Round 1 and we want it played at the MCG.

Interesting.

Good call by our club. We dug our heels and could probably play Carlton in round two at MCG. It means more fans will get to see Tiges match it with Blues. All the best to AFL finding another blockbuster!

They want 3 big games in Melbourne to start the year, yet they have no access to the MCG.
Can't see it working very well as the MCG tenants won't want to have home games at Etihad 1st up, unless they play away games but that would mean they won't be blockbusters as teams like Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and StKilda would be the home teams.

If Vlad isn't bluffing and Etihad hosts the round 1 matches in Melbourne, I'd rather see us play the tankers in round 2 at the 'G and interstate in round 1. That way the anticipation (and therefore the crowd) is practically the same as it's our first game in Melbourne for the season.
