Wow I can't believe there's hate for players , I don't hate anyone who wears a Melbourne jumper an I'm not gonna simply write them off ( well pedo maybe )

Kent is quick an strong through the core like a young chapman
He took the game on tackles hard an has a little swagger
Yeah he didn't get it enough, but he was a first year player and will get plenty more

I would prefer him over a Nicholson anyday of the week

In fact imagine kent an tapscott putting forward pressure on around the 50, there would be some sore lads

My major problem with this board is that people allow their dislike of certain players to cloud their interest in the team itself.

You all behave as if you want players like Jetta to be useless and remain useless. Surely the MFC benefits the most if Roos gets the most out of Jetta? If he teaches him how to get his hands on the ball so that he can use his very good disposal for the good of the team? As much as anyone else I would have delisted Neville this season and probably not rerookied him, but I'm still going to hope like hell that he improves over the offseason and becomes a best 22 player.

On Kent, I actually really like the kid. Hard at it and takes the game one. Has pace too, which is something we need.

Disposal % means very little to me now days. The amount of sideways chipping or even backwards helps the % go up but does it really help the team?

Hospital handballs also improve %, the ones when player A handballs to player B surrounded by three opposition players and gets mugged. Because it hit the intended target its considered a effective possession when it is anything but.

I think a lot of Nev's stats fall into these two categories. Cant remember any laser style damaging kicks into the forward 50 or coming out of the back half.

Id love him to improve, really i would, i hope he does, but i cant see it happening. People can say its negative if they wish, i call it realistic.

Your point? If the team named on paper plays like real AFL he'll be on the field after 2 minutes.

My point was pretty obvious, I doubt anyone had him benched for opening bounce tactical reasons.

You got me.

Hey mate, you've made a couple of great posts so I'm glad you saw the joke in my reply.

Your points on Jetta were really good ones. I think the major hurdle for him is that for all his solid attributes, he doesn't really have any genuine standout weapons at AFL level.

He has a very low possession count, and minimal hurt factor when he does get it.

I love Jetta for his effort and endeavour - but I think he is a good VFL player.

Kent def. ticked enough boxes for me too.

Certainly wasn't AFL fit to run out games but fat and lazy. Righteo.

In fact, I'm back him. He will make it.

I do see your point.
Well hopefully if he does retire or is delisted(most likely) this season he'll come back to WA so he can play in the WAFL and I'll be able to see him play locally! Thanks regarding the complements on my posts by the way. :D

There were possibly 3 or 4 occasions at most last year where Kent could have given off the ball or blocked but chose the wrong option - but for a first year player in such a shit side, I thought he looked like he has potential overall.

I like the way he backs himself and I also like that he has a 'hurt factor' with his possessions.

The fact he was clearly overweight isn't a good thing, but it does offer scope for lots of improvement if he shapes up - and I'm prepared to look past that for a kid in his first professional year.

The fact we have no small/attacking forwards who are fast and can kick a goal makes him even more worth a shot in my opinion.

Kent, is neither here nor there for me. For every positive thing about him there is negitive.

Much in the same way i view Clisby. We will learn a lot about him this year, its make or break time already. Not willing to label him a dud just yet, but my gut (how appropriate) instinct is 'not up to it.'

Mind you, if it came to giving Kent a chance or playing Byrnes, id rather give Kent the opportunity to prove me wrong.

Not sure that I would put Clisby ahead of Dunn or Matt Jones as interchange or even Fitzy (who is not even mentioned as a potential emergency)?

Anyone putting a pen through Dean Kent will have egg on their face. For a first year kid with no fitness base to play 15 games and play some of the footy he did in our side was a great return. He takes the game on, has some toe, and is a penetrating kick with real goal sense. Sure, he made some decision errors with the ball in hand and his goalkicking let him down a bit at times. But he'll be a big part of Roosy's plans.

Kent desperately needs a non-preferred foot though. You can't be a forward pocket but one-sided. Aaron Davey had the same problem, and I think that really hampered his ability. If you can only kick on one side then you become predictable and hence easy to defend. That's why Milne and Stevie J are such star small forwards.

I hear you. But not many left footers have a right foot. I think in time Kent will play that high half forward/midfield role.

Kent laid a lot of tackles and shepherds , he backed himself in to kick goals , people have called boomer Harvey selfish and yet he's a champion

Yet I still believe he is one of the main reasons that the Kangaroo's have not been able to transition from 7-8th to a top 4 side.

Don't want to derail a thread but I don't think he would get a game for Geelong or Sydney who pride themselves on unselfish football.

I get that people want to see players take the game on and make plays but Kent was caught too often last year and needs to either improve his fitness or make better decisions. Given that he is young and still learning it's too early to write him off just yet

Stevie J? I've no problems with a kid taking the game on and mucking up. Especially when he shows more in a struggling team than a Shannon Byrnes. If he's still doing that in his third/fourth year then you have to ask questions.

Mate boomer Harvey runs people down with the footy all the time he isn't a selfish player
He is someone who backs himself to finish an take responsibility rather than pass it on to someone else

Kent found himself running towards goal with maybe fitzy in a 1 on 3 half the time
Sometimes you can just look at people in any sport an see attributes that you know will serve them well at the highest level
And Kent's core strength speed and confidence tell me he will play ok

I guess you could say Stevie J is selfish too but as a forward it doesn't effect the team as much as if he played through the guts each game. I imagine if he did he wouldn't be given the licence to play the way he does, but there are times when he does turn the ball over a lot by doing stupid things. When you have a good team to back you up it's doesn't hurt as much as say when one of our blokes does something like that. I'm hoping we are able to improve our goals from turnovers as well under Roos because that is a massive momentum killer.

Yeah that's my line of thinking as well, i'm happy we got Brynes because I think he will push guys like Kent to improve and hopefully make him a permanent member of our 22

His speed makes his tackles look impressive but at an average of 2.7 tackles a game in 2013 (and 2.0 in his career), he's far from a team leader in that department.

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2013-12-13/grimes-will-boost-defence-frawley

THE RETURN of 2012-13 co-captain Jack Grimes to the backline will be a significant boost for the Demons next year, according to key defender James Frawley.

Grimes, who spent greater time in the midfield in 2013, before injury interrupted his season, is training with the backline this pre-season, where he has produced some fine form, particularly in 2012.

Frawley said Melbourne’s influx of midfielders through the trade/draft period enabled Grimes to return.

Fantastic.
