Thanks CJ - long time reader 1st time poster. 2014 is the first time I have not had at least 2-3 rookies in my Round 1 team (although there are potentially 4 Dees debuts). Positive signs regarding competitions for round 1 spots.
Good point, although it does worry me how many of these blokes seem to be on restricted training loads... doesn't bode well for the first few rounds potentially.

I totally agree. Although Clubs are saying now that even fit blokes are on modified/personalised programs - however we appear to have an abundance of talls who have not had enough miles in the legs over pre-season. Will be interesting to see how much game time they get over NAB Cup. Tyson and a fit Trengove are who I am most looking forward to watching Round 1.

I reckon more so than any other place we won't be taking guys who aren't 100% into round 1 knowing how important it is for everyone involved in the club to see us start positively
Totally agree - especially after rushing Clark, Trengove and to a lesser extent Dawes last season. Lets be honest - whatever Roosy decides to do Round 1 we will all completely agree with :D

Yeah if he rocked up in a guernsey smoking a cigarette saying to clear the 50 for him cuz hell do it on his own I'd back him

A poster on Demonland says a MFC player told him that he expected cross, Vince, Tyson and Hogan to play Round 1 but suggested no others for first round debut.

Interesting. Probably only Michie and JKH that would challenge that. Glad to hear Hogan will be over any injury concerns for round 1.

Don't think Trengove has the body or pace to make it as a mid. Jury still out on Watts. As a mid he needs to harden up. Nowhere to hide this year as Roos will have the blow torch on the team to win games and push up the ladder. Would also like to see Salem in the mids ASAP. I am very optimistic that PJ/PR will succeed in The Dees' resurrection ;)

Trengove has the build of a midfielder. Agree his pace is below par, however I'm hopeful that is a fitness/injury issue that can be rectified over the pre-season. I never noticed he was slow during under 18's or early in his AFL career - and plenty of elite mid-fielders are not fast. Also can anyone remember the game against Brisbane in Darwin when he chased down Pearce Hanley - one of my highlights of 2013. I'm expecting big improvement out of JT this season. Will be getting the #9 on my new jersey as well.

Trengove isn't quick, no, but his pace has been well down the last two years due to his injury problems I think. Plus you always look slower when teammates sell you into trouble or fail to protect you.
IMO he can still be a high quality mid... He's never going to be an explosive Judd/Danger/Ablett type but he can be super- effective as a big bodied Barlow sort.

Trengove had a 20 metre sprint of under 3 secs at the draft combine, that's pretty sharp - as CJ said he's completely lost it the last two years though.

I reckon Trengove had OP, but he seems the kind of bloke who won't let anyone use that as an excuse for him, so it's never been stated officially.

I agree with this - he lost pace and distance/penetration in his kicking. Similar to Luke Ball. Let's hope whatever it was he is completely over it - and is fit and firing for 2014 onwards.

Hey guys.

Sorry to butt in, just like to see what the opposition fans are thinking leading into round 1.

Just wanted to highlight this and say; Trengove reminds me so much of Luke Ball it isn't funny. Ball had a great first couple of steps and his lateral movement has always been top shelf, but during 04-06 when we were trying to push through to a GF, the coaches had him playing games when he was clearly injured and it set him back 2 years.

The result for the club is history.

I too think that Trengove showed signs of OP last year and he too was played in games that he should've been rested but the club were desperate to win at all costs.

Fingers crossed for you guys that Roos and Co give him the time needed to get his body right. Even if it means he only plays 10-12 games this season.

FB: Garland - Frawley - Terlich
HB: Grimes - McDonald - Dunn
MID: Trengove - N.Jones - Vince
HF: Watts - Dawes - Toumpas
FF: Hogan - Clark - Howe
Ruck: Jamar - Tyson - Viney
INT: Cross - Clisby - Michie
Sub: Blease
Emergencies: Fitzpatrick - McKenzie - Strauss

Having a crack at the actual Round 1 team:

FB:
Pedersen - Frawley - Terlich
HB: Grimes - McDonald - Dunn
MID: Trengove - N.Jones - Vince
HF: Watts - Dawes - Toumpas
FF: Hogan - Fitzpatrick - Howe
Ruck: Spencer - Tyson - Viney
INT: Cross - McKenzie - Michie
Sub: Kennedy-Harris
Emergencies: Blease - Tapscott - Strauss

No way Clark will be ready, nor Jamar I reckon. Add Garland to that list too, not sure how tall the Saints would be so possibly a shorter (better) player than Pedersen could get a game in that spot. Midfield looks decidedly slow - not sure about including McKenzie ahead of Blease now. The team list tomorrow should be very enlightening as to who will be ready for Round 1.

Viney won't start in the center, I've read a few times that he'll be on a flank a fair bit as Roosy likes to stack the team with mids and the youngsters are the ones who'll get pushed out - think that Pedo won't be needed, Dunn would be able to take the Saints 3rd tall as they aren't super strong with their talls.

I'd probably go,

FB: Dunn McDonald Terlich
B: Grimes Frawley Strauss/Clisby
C: Watts N. Jones Vince
F: Viney Dawes Toumpas
FF: Howe Fitzpatrick Hogan
R: Spencer Cross Trengove
Int: Tyson Michie Blease
S: M. Jones

Would like to start Tyson in the middle, just think they'll go for Cross early on to let Tyson build up some confidence running off the bench.

Fair calls all round, tbh I just copied the post above and made changes as I saw fit. Your team looks better, including the addition of M. Jones who I didn't notice was missing. That said Michie and Blease would be more likely subs I reckon.

B: Dunn Frawley Terlich
HB: Grimes McDonald Nicholson
C: Cross Vince Trengove
HF: Howe Dawes Toumpas
F: JKH Hogan Fitzpatrick
R: Spencer Watts N.Jones
INT: Tyson M.Jones Michie
SUB: Blease

Think Nicho still has more upside than Clisby or Strauss, he can break lines, just keep him away from deep in defence.
Vince, Watts and N.Jones to start in the guts, thinking Roos will want the big bodies in there.
Blease to start sub because of his tank issues, replace Spencer who will ruck for 80% of the game until around 3/4 time and the swing Fitzy into the ruck.
JKH to give us some added spark and pace.

Obviously Garland and Clark auto ins when fit. Jamar, not sold he is any longer in our best 22.

Reckon Clisby will start, big body who will replace Dunn who will in turn replace Garlo. Better than Strauss or Nicho, but I'd rather have Sellar at FB to be honest.

Not sure how Clisby counts as big-bodied... he's tiny. Swap that with Kent the 'mature age draftee' and it's about right.

That said, would have Clisby ahead of both Strauss and Nicholson I think... although maybe that's just because we haven't watched him stuff it up continually for years.

Nicholson!!!?!

Just keep him away from the ball and we'll be right.

Right about Jamar though, hopefully Gawn gets a hold of it this year ... or Spencer becomes a threat up forward when resting.. lol.
