Offloaded their only ruckman.
Flicked Dal Santo, Hayes and Montagna suspended, Steven injured.
Milne retired (huzzah).
Gilbert injured, Fisher and Schneider recovering from long-term injuries.

Aside from Riewoldt, who is close to cooked anyway, do they have any quality players left?

If we lose this one there'll be Dees fans throwing themselves off the upper tiers at the ground. St Kilda should be odds on for the spoon with the bookies and I'd love to see us dust them up.

Armitage is pretty handy, though not the sort of player to carry a side. Savage is a good pickup I think, but again, not a matchwinner by himself. We should win, although I'm still hesitant to say that we will win.

Roos and the players should seriously be relishing this opportunity. Need to get some monkeys off our backs. Haven't won round 1 since 2005, haven't beaten the Saints since 2006. Haven't won at Etihad since god knows when. This is the best opportunity we've had to get on the winners list in a while and we CANNOT **** it up like we have in years gone by. Place our stamp down early. Show the league that the old Melbourne that folded under pressure is gone, show them that the new Demons have arrived and are hungry as ever.

Never rated Armitage, he's not much more than a long-punting honest plodder. Can rack up some numbers but his disposal is pretty ordinary and he's not a particularly damaging player. Savage will be a decent pickup but I'd put him in the same category and he'll struggle now that he doesn't have Mitchell, Lewis, Sewell, Burgoyne, Hodge, etc doing the heavy lifting.

Can't expect Riewoldt and Hayes to play a large proportion of the season, so the only quality player they have left is Montagna, and he is going to wear a tag every week. No midfield, baby ruckmen, not much of a forward line and an inexperienced defence... unless some of their younger players take massive leaps forward they're going to be on target for a GWS-like season.

GWS = what a list. They remind me of the Dees in 1994. They will win a premiership with those guys if they can keep them together.

They remind me of us in 2010 :p

I cant believe that we almost have to go in as 1.01 favourites in round 1 , if we arent at short odds i might put some money down

It was a round 1 game against St Kilda that actually started out demise - round 1 2007, when we were expected to win but lost and then quickly deteriorated with injuries to Robbo and Nietz the next week against Hawthorn and lost 10 games in a row.

Would be nice to start a potential reversing of fortunes against them too. It's weird to think that there are teams that we literally haven't beaten for eight years, including Geelong, North, Hawthorn and St Kilda.

It's weird that there aren't more!

Its actually disgusting that there are a tonne of supporters who would have no memory of losing to melbourne in a competitive game of footy

Yeah exactly. It's why we're still considered the joke of the competition - 15-10 year old Geelong supporters have no reason to think otherwise.

I do get that's why some people laughed at my thread about us pushing for finals sooner than expected as we have been a joke , I luckily have memories of the early 2000's to hang my hat on as to why I love the club but I wonder how many supporters we lost who started supporting us in about 05/06/07 who just have almost no good memories

Yeah it's got t the point when Melbourne lose, people try to sympathise, but I just respond 'It's ok im use to it.' I feel like Bart Simpson when he sells his soul to Milhouse, I just go to every game expecting to lose, and when we do I'm not disappointed, and I miss that. I have no soul. 2002 is the best example of experience highs with bitter lows, that team was unpredictable. Knock off Brisbane at the gabba, lose to the hapless tigers at the g. No matter how often melbourne lose,we won't get hurt, we're the MTV generation. We feel neither highs or lows.
