It's a bit concerning, given we were confident when we drafted him that he'd be a best 22 by now...if he doesn't get in round 1 he'd best pull his finger out.
The other 39 listed players made him a likely best 22. We have a different list now and let's face it, the "best 22" then, wasn't that great. It's sort of good that he's not, it speaks volumes about the improvement of our list. Not sure he ha gone backwards or not developed okay, just that the rest of the list has improved on 2 years ago.

I should have clarified a bit better, I still personally rate Mayes and think he'll be in the side without question this year. But his best position of, I think, a 70% forward 30% mid is very crowded but I would have hoped he'd get spots over the likes of Robinson and Bewick, based on what we invested to get him.

I think he is ahead of those two in terms of natural talent and potential, but their experience put them just ahead of him for now.

That's a solid team but I thing there is one too many if Dawson Robertson or cutler will be sub.

Edit. Don't mind me I am drunk amd prone to stupid posts in the first place.

Edit. Wait am i right. Argh so drunkdrunk right now.

It would appear that team has four on the bench AND a Sub.

I wa frustrated last year that we were giving Aish time to develop him as a midfielder instead of Mayes who IMO would be more damaging.

I'd like to see Mayes as our marking forward. Obviously not a body on body forward, leave that to close etc to negate the opposition defenders. Having mayes drift through, mark and goal would be his best role and one he could easily kick between 30-50 in a season. Especially for a team that has no pillar 40+ forwards with bodies of titans, it'd be a perfect chance for him to shine.

With that being said, he is down on confidence. He's 21, it happens. I'm only 22, and can remember times both with work and music I felt down on confidence and it really does effect your confidence. Learning to properly focus brings natural confidence and he will develop that. He hasn't had the luxury of Ollie Wines playing in a top 4 team, he has had to learn in the muddy side if the 18. He will be better in the long run for it, I'm sure.

Aish seems a lot better equipped to play on ball. Mayes lacks physicality.

I see him as a classic case of an offensive player who shined in that role in his first year, was played down back more in his second to learn to play more defensively, and is struggling to work out balance between the two in his third. I don't think there's too much to worry about. He's too much of a natural footballer not to work it out.

Well said, in my opinion it is something that should at least be given a chance to be worked out in the seniors before relegation to the twos. Especially when he can be so dangerous in the forward half... Probably the only players on the list who have kicked 3 or more goals in a game than him in our list can be counted on one hand... I'll check when I get a chance.

*Bolded are the lock ins for best 22 RD1

Dawson & McGrath are rookies that will push early in the season for a spot... prob not Rd1 though

Staker maybe as a forward option instead of close...but I think he will play out his career similar to Buchanan

*Edited... Forgot Mayes. prob fringe atm unless he starts finding more production to his game. HB Role instead of Beams? Mayes is the hard one to place in the team

I think Leppa has to play Mayes in a fixed role this year on the half forward line.

Purely for round 1, Claye Beams and Bewick are locks. Claye has been a constant in the defensive group all preseason and there's nothing to suggest Leppa will change that given Claye's form is ok. And Bewick has played pretty well for a while now.

I'd also argue that McStay is a lock now for round 1. He's been the most impressive tall forward and will get first crack accordingly.

I agree that Close v Staker is theoretically a live issue given Close's preseason form has not stood out. But there's enough rhetoric from the club to suggest Close will play round 1.

I suspect only two positions are up for grabs....and perhaps only one if Robinson is a lock in Leppa's eyes. Paparone v Mayes v Dawson v McGrath.

I asked about Mayes's long term position on that AFL.com askthecoach thing. Leppa said something like "the beauty about Sammy Mayes is that he can play any position". I get the feeling that Leppa was happier with Mayes's year last year than Mayes was.

I agree with this, and I'd say Robinson probably is a lock for round 1 given we're still pretty young and he has experience in his favour. For all his weaknesses, his output is at least predictable. If Mayes was sent to the reserves to get some confidence back (as I understand Leppa confirmed at the fan forum), I'd guess that would be for at least a few weeks. I reckon Paparone will play.

Agree with this. I've got Close over Staker purely for match fitness - had Staker not had niggles over the PS he'd probably be closer, but I think they'll want to see some sustained form after so long off.

I've got Paparone being squeezed out by Mayes with McGrath taking the sub role. Mayes for his superior ball use and McGrath for the X-factor. I don't have Robinson in my side, but he's one who could also be a sub candidate. Dawson probably needed another good showing in the last PS game to force his way in.

And I can see Bewick having a big year. He's been underestimated by a lot of our supporters for a while now.

You cant afford to pick on reputation from previous history, Mayes has not been in form this preseason, Paparone and McGrath have been more than serviceable during the NAB Challenge. This time last season nobody would have thought that Squizzy would have had the season he did, I think that McGrath may just do the same if given the chance.
Staker doesnt make my best 22, even when fit, need the games put into our future forwards, not has beens.

Gardiner - Merrett - Lester
Rich - Clarke - C. Beams
Adcock - Rocky - Aish
Christensen - Close - Taylor
Martin - McStay - Green
Leuie - D. Beams - Zorko
Redden - Bewick - Paparone
Mayes/Robinson

Don't know who gets the 22nd spot out of Mayes and Robinson. Wouldn't be surprised if Robinson is currently ahead of Mayes. Don't like not having Mayes but a little time in the ressies won't hurt to get him back into form.

You also can't afford to pick just based on NAB cup games alone. reserves pre-season games, match sims and training form will also come into it.

My final prediction:

Gardiner Merrett Lester
Beams Clarke Rich
Adcock Aish Bewick
Zorko Close Christensen
Green McStay Leuenberger
Martin Rockliff Beams

Redden, Robinson, Taylor

Sub: Paparone (To be subbed in for either Gardiner or Lester as we look to add some run out of the back-line in the final quarter)

Regardless of whether it is Witts or Grundy rucking, Martin is going to out run the absolute f*ck out of them, expect a huge game from the big man!

Go Lions!!!

B: Darcy Gardiner, Daniel Merrett, Ryan Lester
HB: Daniel Rich, Justin Clarke, Claye Beams
C: Dayne Zorko, Tom Rockliff, Jed Adcock
HF: Allen Christensen, Michael Close, Matthew Leuenberger
F: Lewis Taylor, Daniel McStay, Josh Green
Foll: Stefan Martin, Jack Redden, Dayne Beams
I/C: Mitch Robinson, James Aish, Rohan Bewick, Marco Paparone (SUB)

Emg: Sam Mayes, Jaden McGrath, Brent Staker

NEW: Dayne Beams (Collingwood), Allen Christensen (Geelong), Mitch Robinson (Carlton)

Welcome! Couple of interesting selections, potentially two round 1 debutantes? I do hope to see Dawson get a crack and McGrath has certainly been a surprise.
