With the end of season 2019 fast approaching and an all likely cleanout on the horizon, it would be interesting to hear what the 22 people would like to see of Round 1 (barring injuries) in 2020.

My theory is 2020 is a year we just try and build, get games into kids, get experience / confidence across the board while clearing out a large portion of our older players (keep hold of Betts, Sloane, Walker, Talia, Mackay as I think they all have a role off-field to mentor the younger guys.
(I know we all like kicking Mackay, but his form and work ethic warrants another year in my eyes - plus he will be cheap)

We need to start planning for f** tilt 2021 - 2022, this means adding in ALOT of new young blood, getting games into our current group aged 18-22 and cementing for the future.

I've earmarked Fogarty, Himmelberg, Sholl, Butts, Hamill, Jones, McHenry, Stengle, McAdam, McPherson as the most important (not already established) young players to get games into.

your thoughts / opinions welcomes, but try not just nitpick and attack - this is strictly MY opinion below,

2020 Round 1 team:

FB: Luke Brown , Daniel Talia , Lachlan Sholl

HB: Tom Doedee , Jordan Butts , Rory Laird

C: Chayce Jones , Brad Crouch , Brodie Smith

HF: Tom Lynch, Tex Walker, Rory Sloane

FF: Eddie Betts , Darcy Fogarty , Tyson Stengle

FOLL: Reilly O'Brien, Matt Crouch, Wayne Milera

INT: Lachlan Murphy, Paul Seedsman, Ned McHenry,
Elliot Himmelberg,

EMERG: Andrew McPherson, Myles Poholke, Riley Knight

Others: Will Hamill, Shane McAdam, David Mackay, Ben Davis, Kyle Hartigan, Kieran Strachan(R), + 7 New draftees + 2-3 New Rookie selections.

I think our defence is too small and our forward line is too tall.

I'd love us to be this ruthless with all the trades/delisting but I wouldn't mind hanging onto Keath, Kelly & Galluci though.

At this stage

B Brown - Talia - Butts
HB Laird - Keath - Doedee
C Smith - Milera - Gallucci
HF Jones - Walker - Lynch
F Fogarty - Himmelberg - Stengle
R O'Brien - Sloane - M. Crouch

I B. Crouch - McHenry - Betts - 1st Round Pick

E Ellis-Yolmen - Hamill - Seedmsan - 2nd Round Pick

----

From the R21 side

Out: Kelly (traded), Hartigan (depth), Mackay (delisted), Murphy (depth), Jacobs (retired), Knight (traded/delisted), Gibbs (traded/depth), Atkins (traded), Otten (retired), Douglas (retired)

In: Jones, O'Brien, Keath, Gallucci, Himmelberg, Butts, Doedee, Stengle, McHenry, 1st Round Pick

----

List Changes
Otten - retired
Douglas - retired
Jacobs - retired
Mackay - delisted
Kelly - traded
Jenkins - traded
Greenwood - traded
Atkins - traded
Gibbs - traded if there is an offer, otherwise retain as depth
Knight - traded if there is an offer, otherwise delist
Wilson - delisted (rookie)
Hunter - delisted (rookie)

----

I think we need massive wholesale changes. I'd move players like Ellis-Yolmen, Gibbs, Seedsman, Hartigan and Murphy to depth positions in favor of young guys. I'd also delist, retire or trade up to 10 senior players easily and do the same with two rookies.

Of our out of contract players the only one I would keep is Keath.

Guys who should definitely get games in 2020 are Butts and McHenry for pretty much the entire season. I'd also try and give as many games as we can to guys like McAdam, Hamill, Davis and Sholl where appropriate plus all of our early selections next year.

I'd trade in a depth key position defender for chump change (5th round pick or something) and a depth ruckman. We have three decent draft picks, from there we could need up to 5 more selections. I have six on the trade list, so that should be achievable.

In short, I'd gut the list and make 10 changes for next year's side, minimum

Wowee watching betts this year especially that last few AFL games, he is clearly cooked, to have him in your best tea, looks like youre scrapping the barrell

Sauce, Mackay, Douglas, Scott Thompson and Mark Ricciuto.

Doesn't really matter who we play around that core, will be unstoppable.

We could probably get Ricciuto as a Cat B rookie given he hasn't played high-grade football for three years

I'm with you, I'm bullish on McPherson, McAadam and Hamill, so I'd slot those in in round 1 unless pick 4 is a total gun.

Also would de-list Davis and trade any out of Ellis-Yolmen, Gibbs, Seedsman, Hartigan and Murphy that have any interest.

We need better midfielders, and we need players that can kick properly.

Like a lot of our squad...

I like your team except maybe I would have Gallucci stay and swap for Murphy as he just wont make itinto anything more than an honest effort player.. Also like to have Keath stay.

Not sure how it helps our midfield.

Good analysis. Keath is a required player. There is no reason we should allow him to leave. Will stay if we offer him what he is worth. Murphy for me is out. Will never amount to anything more than a patrenko imo. Would keep Gallucci. Would trade Knight and Poholke. Laird is an interesting case study. Would trade before he loses even more value. Also feel there will only be 1 crouch on our list next year.
Delist: Hunter Wilson
Trade: Atkins Knight Gibbs Greenwood Poholke Kelly Laird Jenkins
Retire: Otten Jacob's Mackay Douglas Betts(retire or trade)

Brown Talia/Butts Doedee
Milera Keath Hamill/Sholl

Stengle Himmelberg Mchenry.

ROB Smith MCrouch/BCrouch

Mcadam Trade/Draft Trade/Draft Trade/Draft

Picks: Our goal should be to get 6 picks in the top 30. Those picks could determine our next flag.

*Eddie and Stengle to play about half a season each, enabling Betts to stay fresh and Stengle to build his fitness and confidence.

Gibbs continues in the important ‘half a mill a season depth player’ role.

My ideal round 1 side would be

F: McAdam ~ Fogarty ~ McHenry
HF: Sloane ~ Walker ~ Lynch
C: B Crouch ~ Milera ~ Jones
HB: Laird ~ Keath ~ Scholl
FB: Brown ~ Talia ~ Doedee
Ruck: O’Brien ~ M Crouch ~ CEY

Interchange: Gallucci ~ Gibbs ~ #######

Trade: Atkins, Kelly, Greenwood, Jenkins, Knight

Retire: Douglas, MacKay, Jacobs,

###### = Recruit 2 tall mobile defenders. Not Hartigan

Jenkins: Gold Coast. I would offer Jenkins, Knight, pick 16 (see greenwood trade) and our 2020 first round pick for their PP (hopefully pick 2) and Lukosius.

In: Pick 2 and Lukosius
Out: Knight, Jenkins, pick 16 and 2020 first round pick

Atkins: Essendon for pick 32

Greenwood: to Brisbane. Pick 20 and Greenwood for pick 16

Kelly: to Collingwood for pick 34

Brown Talia Doedee
Smith Keath Laird

ROB Crouch Crouch
Seed Sloane Milera

Mcadam Tex Gooch
Stengle Fog/EH Lynch

I: Kelly Greenwood? Gibbs Jones

- Kelly the 7th defender that allows us to use Smith further up the field if need be.
- Greenwood I'm unsure if he will be at the club, but will be the inside midfielder that rests forward and provides another marking target.
- Gibbs and Jones to perform roles across the HB/midfield/HF as needed.

- McHenry/Knight would be my next ins
- I am so unsure about what to do with Atkins at this stage. Part of me think he's garbage and wants to trade him. The other part of me thinks that if we get our s**t together off-field, and therefore perform better on-field, Atkins could be one of our biggest beneficiaries. He was super handy and so creative in 2017 when we were up and going as a whole unit, and I don't want to miss out on that (plus he's also one of our only left footers). Regardless, Milera Seeds, Gooch and Jones with another PS probably deserve first crack at our wing/HF positions.
