Big 1st game to start off with for 2021 against the Saints in what will be a HUGE season for the Giants in it's 10th year

Promising signs last weekend against the Swans but will be hoping for another sunny day

Injury Update

Early prognosis
Keeffe
hobbled from the field late in Sunday's win over Sydney, but the early diagnosis is positive. He will be monitored but is expected to be fine for the opening round against St Kilda, as are Flynn and Daniels after recent setbacks. Whitfield is still at least a month away from a return as he battles a bruised liver suffered at training in early February. - Michael Whiting

Injury Update

Early prognosis
Frawley
has been ruled out for at least eight weeks after damaging his hamstring tendon in the AAMI Community Series win over Carlton. The Saints will be cautious with the veteran who injured the same hamstring earlier in the pre-season. Hannebery will miss the season opener against Greater Western Sydney having not done enough conditioning due to a nagging calf injury but the Saints are confident he'll feature early. Jones will attempt to hit full speed running this week to put his hand up for the Giants and Marshall is nearing a return to running in the hope he can play inside the first month. Geary is progressing strongly from a fractured fibula sustained in late January. - Mitch Cleary
Updated: Tuesday, March 9

Also Brad Crouch and Ryder will be out

With Ryder and Marshall out for the game the ruck should be a 50/50 contest and hopefully Flynn can take the 1st 2 games as a learning curve with the Dockers the following week having injury concerns in the ruck position
If the Giants are 2 win and have a good season kelly is the key and he needs to put his foot down in how he plays as i think he is just cruising and also he does need to be played where he can be most damaging which is around the contest not stuck on the opposite wing or forward flank

NOTES: Despite some off-season departures and injuries to key personnel, the Giants will field an excellent team to play St Kilda in round one. Flynn has recovered from an ankle niggle and should edge Briggs to make his debut in the ruck. Davis is back from a knee issue to resume his spot at full-back, while Cumming and Idun have impressed and deserve spots. Daniels (hamstring) is fit again but might need a game or two at the lower level to regain a deserved spot in the forward line. - Michael Whiting

It's a whole new era for us, whether we realise it or not.

Making just one GF was all that golden list of talent was able to achieve between 2016-2019. If it hadn't been for COVID last year, they might have held together for one more shot.

All I'm asking for this season is consistent effort, regardless of who we're playing, or where it is.

Debutants galore: Every AFL club’s predicted line-up for Round 1

GWS GIANTS

B:
Sam Reid, Phil Davis, Nick Haynes

HB: Isaac Cumming, Sam Taylor, Harry Perryman

C: Josh Kelly, Tim Taranto, Tom Green

HF: Toby Greene, Jake Riccardi, Tanner Bruhn

F: Daniel Lloyd, Harry Himmelberg, Matt de Boer

FOLL: Matthew Flynn, Stephen Coniglio, Jacob Hopper

I/C: Connor Idun, Callan Ward, Jack Buckley, Lachie Ash

Tanner Bruhn couldn’t have been more impressive in the AAMI Community Series and has cemented his spot for Round 1, while Matthew Flynn gets the nod over Kieren Briggs after his impressive performance in the absence of Braydon Preuss. Lachie Keeffe and Brent Daniels may both be right to go but, after overcoming niggles, may require some time in the twos to work their way back, more so for Daniels than Keeffe.

Looks like it will be a wet game or at least a greasy one.

I think this helps us. It makes the game about contested ball and midfield strength over the ball. An area we probably have them covered for.

Pre 2020 we were one of the best contested.
They are also more hammered by injury than is regarding their best 22.

It will show where we are at.

Round one is of course important for every club. But in 2021 I think it’s especially so. Many pundits have this game as a team on the rise (saints) v a team on the decline (us)

we win and it won’t mean a whole lot, but if we lose then it willconfirm the narrative

Flynn and Bruhn in.

So excited for Bruhn, I hope he gets more midfield time than he did in the AAMI series as the season goes on, his class and composure is going to be VERY important for us going forward
