If Sam Mitchell is serious about this rebuild and the need to fast-track the inexperienced midfield, then MacDonald simply has to be selected ahead of Shiels.

Losing Day, Bramble and Impey really hurts. The lack of speed will be evident without them.

B: Hardwick, Hartigan, Jiath

HB: Scrimshaw, Frost, Sicily

C: Ward, Mitchell, Phillips

HF: Wingard, Lewis, Gunston

F: Breust, Koschitzke, Moore

R: McEvoy, O’Meara, Worpel

INT: Morrison, Newcombe, Reeves, MacDonald, Nash (Sub)

EMG: Lynch, Grainger-Barras, Shiels, Maginness
You’ve got more oldies than I would have

My comment was more aimed at him being often left out of the 22 in this thread...

but, Nash is the difference we need in the centre.... Worps, Mitch, Jom, Duke, Ward, etc doesn't work as well as 2 of them and Nash imo.

2 plus Nash.

Yep can see the benefit of him coming off the bench as an extra mid rotation…but it’s seems temporary. Not totally sold on him as a long term player.

Nash is decent but I don’t see him in that team yet and more fighting for Newcs spot.

What I like about Nash is that when the ball doesn't come out off the ruck like we want it he can adjust.

So does Duke and Ward.

JOM and Worps.... and even Titch.... as good as they are, don;t adjust as well.

Nash bowls people over, with a tackle, or a fend off, to turn the tide.

And he has real speed off the mark.

Oh, and he is a Boss.

Would have no issue playing CJ on modified minutes in round 1 if he isn't quite 100% match fit.
We just simply need his run off the half back line.

He consistently played between 80% and 85% TOG in 2021.
Play him in bursts just to create some flair and X-factor that is sorely lacking with Impey, Bramble and Day all missing. Even 65%-70% would be enough.

I didn't mind the 2nd half of the Richmond game. Ward Nash Duke Worpel Long leading the midfield charge and held their own. Hope we go with this as much as we can this year. Switch in JOM and Tom but try and limit them to 1 in and keep 3.

With no Day, Impey, Bramble (etc no pace), in the side we are going to rely on a select few like Ward, CJ, Wingard, Phillips and Morrison to provide the run.

Hardwick - Hartigan - Frost
Scrimshaw - Sicily - CJ

Lynch - JOM - Mitchell
Ward - Nash - Phillips

Wingard - Kosi - Gunston
Breust - Lewis - Moore

Newcombe - Worpel - Morrison - Big Boy
Sub - MacDonald / DGB / Maginess
  • Wingard, JOM and Worpel rotate through the middle/HFF.
  • Gunston playing high HFF
  • Morrison rotates through the wing and the HBF.
  • Big Boy through the ruck and deep forward.
Edit: forgot Gunston. I'd drop Big Boy completely, but that won't happen. So MacDonald would likely make way. Phillips in simply because we need the run.

Shiels definitely and maybe Phillips, though they are playing different roles.

And based on the Richmond game he'd be ahead of Worpel.

Phillips and Shiels out (1 the sub).
Ward to rotate through the wing.
Nash off the bench.

I'm definitely not his biggest fan but he's earnt his spot IMO.

I'd have him ahead of O'Meara. I'm all for embracing the future.

Even with Day, Impey and Bramble unavailable there are still some tough choices to make. IMO Nash has to play though. He was impressive in the Richmond practice match. Prefer Lynch over Reeves. Would also like to find room for Macdonald. Would love to be a fly on the wall at selection.
