I think if we have Maric in the backline it means we need Bo Allan to play a more defensive role on a dangerous forward.

While I want Maric in the backline can understand that it’s probably either Allan or Maric at the moment as they both offer that rebounding aggressive hb role (in different ways) opposite Ginbey.

Whats the line up when we play as smaller opposition.

Freo

Bolton, Fredrick, Walters, ??

Cole is our lock down small atm. Baker and Hough make three who can play small.

Can see why we are chasing another.

Greggo seems balanced as a defender. Allan is 191cm, Ginbey 192+.

I low key expect Ginbey to surprise us this year with his ability to play tall. He played really well on mac andrew last season after he was moved on to him. He also seems physically bigger this seasons too. I watched like 10 mins of the cats game but I’m assuming he played a bit ln cameron while he was smashing us but I’d love to see him being able to play against the mobile Key forwards

I’d go as fact as saying Ginbey seems like he can player bigger while Maric for his height seems like a guy that plays a fractionally smaller. I don’t think Maric has key position material on him and he moves so well I can see him playing on smalls(probably not the zippy type).

Yeah watching live at GMHBA he and Hough played on Cameron early and both were toweled up. A lot of that was on the midfield though and Cameron is one of the best of his generation, tbf.

I wouldn't want to rely on Ginbey manning a key forward, but could be a handy rotation/break glass in case of injury.

I don’t think Baker is a lockdown defender, Cole and Hough are and Hough can play small or tall (better on small/medium forwards imo) and are a bit more accountable. Ginbey, Allan seem to have been given licence to rebound and run the ball out of D50. It’s quite clearly a coaching directive that as soon as they get the ball they’re off to the races and players in D50 seemed to look for them.

Baker is more a sweeper who can clean up ground balls in D50 than a play maker…. I think.

Keeping in mind this is just based on what we’ve seen the last 2 weekends.

Will be interesting to see what the lineup looks like against Melbourne.

Based off the intraclub, I would be developing Grego into a lockdown for the next couple of years and give him games in that role.

IMO I would have Allan and Maric ahead of Cole.

Maric isnt ahead of Cole if we need a small lock down defender.

Allan is a good head taller than Woosha.

So its a balance issue and who can handle the smalls.

Bo is quick, thats a plus.

Certainly shows why we are interested in Starcevich.

If we are worried about handling multiple dangerous small forwards, surely that can be a week to week proposition, and it doesn't necessarily have to be Allan vs Cole.

Maybe Allan or one of our other defenders could slide up to a wing and Hutch/Hunt comes out for Cole vs specific teams like vs Freo

Other clubs have managed fine with a tall backline, GWS for example went with Whitfield as their smallest at 185cm, Perryman 187 and Ash 188cm the only others sub 190. They've lost Perryman and will probably have to replace him with Aleer if they want to keep him, who is listed at 194cm.

A lot of teams run 3 talls in their backlines PLUS a designated kicker, if one of our talls can be that designated kicker then we are ahead.

Imo we won't be too tall with just Baker at sub 190cm in the d50

I definitely think Baker can play the small lockdown role and we know Hough can cover smalls well.

Allan and Ginbey hypothetically should be able to cover both, albeit sacrificing agility for height/mass.

I've been impressed with Maric's intensity around the ball in d50 during the preseason games and I'm happy for him to play or hone his craft for the Beagles.

I think we need to get 50 games into Allan asap because he's a diamond in the rough, could be Cripps like in the middle.

Getting 10 games into Grego wouldn't hurt either.

Or send Allan and Hutch play more inside mid minutes and Duggan plays some minutes back. Obviously this is very Oppo dependent.

I think the versatility of the side is great. Could be times when we throw the magnets around and players not looking completely out of place. Maric/Allan/Baker/Graham/Hutch could all feasibly play minutes at any line. Plenty of others that could play a few lines. I'm not convinced we have to make sweeping changes if we have a small or tall oppo. Possible we just play a couple of people in different position groups.

Good thing is we’ve accumulated a few utilities but they’re not the usual pure athletes that can play a few roles but don’t really fit in anywhere

Which senior players are going to be leading the youth in the Beagles this year?

Gaff, Darling and Sheed along with Trew, Nelson, Culley and Ruscoe are all gone and represented the stronger core of our team.

We are going to need some mature bodies in there to lead the young lads.

Flynn? Petch? Cole? Hunt?

This is pretty fair. Not sure HEdwards and Allan are locked in round one. Think Maric/Allan/Cole might be competing for one or 2 spots. Brock might push HEdwards out.

Hough/Baker/Ginbey/Gov are locks, need atleast one KPD means 2 spots from the 3 above.
Maybe one of Allan or Maric as more aggressive players and Cole for the more defensive player??
Or just dont worry about accountability and full attack boatraces to 100?

You are spot on that we'll learn lots come round 1.

Thanks. could both play or is it one or the other?

One or the other

Neither has the ability to play as an effective forward whilst not rucking so one in the AFL, the other in the WAFL

Jack Williams is the likely back up ruck although Archer Reid is going to put pressure on him for that spot
