So if Allan is ill and supposedly not available for selection why is he training with the main group?

Can’t have too many lingering symptoms or if it was that contagious you’d think they’d be keeping him away from the rest of the squad.

The club's probably being over cautious by saying he's 'unlikely' to play. They're probably giving him the run around over the next couple of sessions to see if he's got the energy to keep up with the group. We're still another five days away from game day so you'd think he'd be pretty well recovered by then.

Duggan at centre feels a bit weird.
Hopefully some of the young blokes can have a run through the middle before (and after) Yeo returns
Yep, I watched the game again, Duggan rarely seems to get clear space, always being tackled in congestion, struggling to handball, his handballs aren't that flash either, and we know what his kicks are like..he's not fast or clever enough, he's not dynamic enough, not a playmaker, hard to explain (we could do better than him in the mid?)
Brockman and Dewar both classy at times, Ryan might need to lose a bit of figjam and switch on? Cripps also needs to spark up with those two, plus Long and Owies breathing down their necks.
As coach said expect player changes and positional changes into the season, until they find the right balance...sounds good.
Interested to see who swings through the midfield, until Yeo+Hewett are settled in..(oh thats right, Hewett's good to go again?)

Maric and Cole seem the obvious selections if Allan doesn’t recover in time - Bell’s exact words were he seems unlikely at this stage so with todays session and I assume the Thursday session before the team is selected he may be able to mount a case that he’s over it

However, don’t be surprised if one of Johnston or Grego come from nowhere to get selected ahead of Maric as they would both offer more run/speed

I wonder if the reason JWilliams hasnt been picked as the fwd/ruck is that the club sees him as an actual ruckman now and potentially as the guy to take over from Flynn in the future?

Jack is a very similar height to Nank who Mini would be used to, and he looks like he can put on a lot of bulk - just like nank

Mate, that's our starting centre bounce combo.

Get excited!

Birds of Prey vs Weather Events:

Sunday March 16, 6:10pm at Optus Stadium

Ladies and gentlemen, footy fans and masochists alike, welcome to the season opener that absolutely nobody outside of Perth and the Gold Coast is talking about! This Sunday, witness the epic clash between a team rebuilding for the third straight year and another team that's been on the verge of breaking through since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

West Coast Eagles: The Renaissance Birds

The Eagles enter 2025 with renewed hope, which is the polite way of saying "they've won 12 games in their last 80 tries but THIS time it's different!" New coach Andrew "Mini" McQualter has been tasked with implementing a revolutionary game plan called "territory football," which involves—and prepare to have your mind blown—turning the ball over fast and owning forward-half footy! Such innovation! Such vision!

The Eagles brain trust made the cunningly strategic decision to trade their top draft pick for Richmond utility Liam Baker, causing such outrage among the fanbase that one might have thought they'd replaced the club song with a Nickelback cover. Fear not though, as Baker, together with Jack "Anaconda" Graham, are bringing what Eagles supporters have been desperately craving: genuine mongrel! That's right, after three years of being bullied worse than a kid with a "Kick Me" sign, West Coast now has players who make opponents think twice before grabbing that loose ball.

Tyler Brockman enters the season with the kind of expectations that would make a circus performer nervous. Having shown enough flash to make fans believe he might be the next small forward sensation, he now faces the challenge of doing it consistently or becoming the answer to the trivia question: "Name that guy who kicked those goals that one time."

Tyrell Dewar stands poised to make his mark on the wing and half-forward line with the kind of electric pace that makes fans sit up and opposition defenders quietly panic. His ability to break lines and provide a link between defense and attack will be crucial in McQualter's territory game, though Eagles supporters are hoping his highlight reel may feature more "almost" moments than actual goals.

Jack Hutchinson brings the kind of raw energy that makes coaches simultaneously excited and terrified. Expected to bounce around the field like a pinball with a purpose, Hutchinson's development plan apparently consists of "run fast, hit hard, and we'll figure out the rest later."

Bo Allen, affectionately dubbed "The Project" by fans who've never met him, represents the Eagles' commitment to developing talent that may or may not pay off sometime before the next solar eclipse. His combination of size and potential has the coaching staff dreaming of what might be, while pragmatists wonder if "what might be" will ever become "what is."

Matt Owies arrives as the classic small forward with a chip on his shoulder approximately twice his size. Having made his way to the Eagles via Carlton, Owies brings goal sense and pressure that the team desperately needs, along with that unique quality of players who've been overlooked: the burning desire to make everyone who doubted them regret it.

Star midfielder Harley Reid enters his sophomore year under more scrutiny than a teenager with helicopter parents. Will he stay? Will he go? Will the AFL media mention this approximately 37 times per quarter? You bet they will!

Jeremy McGovern returns for another season of standing in front of everything, refusing to be outmarked despite having a body that medical professionals describe as "mostly sticky tape at this point." His defensive partner Tom Barrass departed for Hawthorn, leaving McGovern to mentor young Harry Edwards, whose development plan apparently includes being thrown to the wolves on a weekly basis.

The Eagles' midfield can be summed up as "Elliot Yeo, when his body permits (which is roughly every third blue moon), Tim Kelly, and a collection of promising youngsters who we hope don't get broken." Yet somehow, optimism flows through the club like wine at an end-of-season function.

Gold Coast Suns: Eternally Rising

Meanwhile, the Suns arrive with their annual early-season optimism intact. This is traditionally followed by their mid-season injury crisis and late-season existential questioning, but for now, hope springs eternal on the glitter strip!

The Suns will be without developing key forward Jed Walter, who's serving a one-game VFL suspension. This is peak Gold Coast—having players suspended in competitions they're not even playing in anymore.

Captain and brick wall Jarrod Witts will once again attempt to single-handedly keep the Suns relevant, while Matt Rowell continues his quest to win every hard ball in the league or die trying. Touk Miller remains the team's heart and soul, though nobody's quite sure if he's considered a veteran yet or if the Suns are still calling their inaugural players "emerging talents."

Reuben Ginbey arrives at the contest with the enthusiasm of someone who just discovered coffee and the raw talent that makes opposition coaches grumble about draft order inequities. The Suns will be watching carefully as this Eagle attempts to soar, hoping their midfield can clip his wings before he becomes yet another rising star making their lives difficult.

Daniel Rioli and John Noble will make their club debuts, bringing much-needed rebounding power and that special quality the Suns always look for in recruits: having played for clubs that actually know how to win.

Match Predictions

The Eagles' new game plan of "kick it forward and pray" will either result in a 10-goal victory or 30 inside-50s and three goals total. There is no in-between.

Jack Graham will tackle at least four Suns players so hard their ancestors will feel it, causing Gold Coast's midfield to suddenly develop an aversion to contested possession.

Liam Baker will somehow appear in all 18 positions on the field simultaneously, demonstrating why the Eagles were willing to trade away a potential top-3 pick for him. Eagles fans will grudgingly admit that maybe the trade wasn't highway robbery after all.

Harley Reid will have either 35 disposals or 7, with either outcome generating 14 think pieces about his future by Monday morning.

Jeremy McGovern will intercept mark approximately 47 balls, each one accompanied by the sound of his various body parts creaking like an old ship.

Matt Rowell will win every clearance but Gold Coast will somehow still trail in the clearance count.

The Eagles' forward line, supposedly their strength, will kick either 15 goals or 5 goals 23 behinds—with the latter being more likely given their recent history.

Final Thought

As West Coast begins the McQualter era with a fresh game plan, renewed hope, and a surprisingly healthy list heading into the season, Eagles fans are just happy to have their old club song back. With injuries seemingly behind them and genuine optimism in the air, this might actually be the year where the term "rebuild" is replaced with "resurgence."

And remember, if the Eagles lose, it's all part of the rebuild. If they win, McQualter is a genius and premiership contention is just around the corner! That's how sports analysis works, right?

Prediction: West Coast by 7 points in a game that features more turnovers than a bakery, with Jack Graham putting the fear of god into Gold Coast players and Liam Baker proving his worth as the Eagles finally remember what winning in Round 1 feels like.
